This curious chelonian is a juvenile Roti Island Snake-necked Turtle hatched and reared at our Turtle Survival Center in South Carolina.

The Roti Island Snake-necked Turtle (Chelodina mccordi) is endemic to the tiny island of Rote in Indonesia. There, intensive collection for the international pet trade has led to presumed extinction of the wild population. Now, it’s one of the most endangered turtles in the world.

Our Turtle Survival Center in Cross, South Carolina, is one of several managed captive-breeding programs for the species. To date, our successful breeding program at the TSC has produced 22 hatchling Roti Island Snake-necked Turtles.

With continued pressure from collection and agricultural activities on Rote, programs like ours are the snake-necked turtle’s only hope of survival. Plans, however, are underway to restore the population on Rote.

Platysternon megacephalum

This strange turtle has large, thick plates of armour on the top and sides of its head, along with a solid bony skull, for protection. In addition to its over-sized head, the big-headed turtle has an unusually long tail. They are weak swimmers but strong climbers, using their strong claws, tail and even their beak to grasp rocks in fast-flowing water.

The big-headed turtle is the only species in its genus and family, Platysternidae. This unique species is the sole representative of an entire branch of the tree of life more than 75 million years old, having diverged from all other living species before the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Despite their appearance, these turtles are not related to snapping turtles. They use their hooked beak and long tail to navigate the streams in which they live. Big-headed turtles cannot pull their head entirely into their shell. (Added a picture of a common snapping turtle to compare)

I constantly filter though comments, and I've banned over 40 people within the last 2 hours for making nasty comments on pictures of peoples pets and other pictures about killing these creatures and eating them. I will not tolerate these comments. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. Like I said, half of these pictures are someone's pet. Have some respect.
