What comes to mind when you think of a philanthropist? The term often conjures images of great wealth, and many of us don’t think we could ever be considered a philanthropist. But the Giving Circle 100 Women Who Care Charlotte (100WWCC) makes philanthropy attainable through collective giving.

It's simple: Members meet over dinner four times a year to learn about three Charlotte-based 501(c)(3) non-profits and vote anonymously on which local non-profit the group will support. Each member makes a $100 donation directly to the local non-profit for a collective impactful gift. Past recipients of the 100WWCC’s collective donation include Baby Bundles, Freedom Communities, and The Relatives.

Kathy Reardon's passion for ballroom dancing has taken her on a journey across the ocean, blending the elegance of dance with the thrill of international travel. Kathy, a retired physician from Barclay Downs, has been honing her dance skills under the tutelage of Jake Davies at Midtown Ballroom since 2013. She explains how she first got into ballroom dancing. “We were planning our daughter’s wedding for June 2012 and did not want to embarrass her on the dance floor at Myers Park Country Club, so my husband and I started lessons in January of that year. I had no plans to perform or compete at that time. But I found that I loved to dance,” Kathy recalls. Kathy’s husband Jim is also a retired physician. They have lived in Barclay Downs for almost 40 years, the last 36 on Ferncliff Road.

Meet your SouthPark neighbors, Fran and Bernie Gesing. Fran was born in Tryon, NC, and grew up in small towns across North Carolina before moving to Charlotte in high school. Bernie was born in Augusta, GA but has lived in Charlotte for over 40 years now. Fran attended Queens University and Bernie attended Appalachian State University. They met at Mac’s Speed Shop. “We like to tell people we met in a biker bar. Neither of us own (or have ridden) a motorcycle but that would just take away from the story,” Bernie shares.

The Bouknight family’s route to adopting their 5-year-old orange tabby cat, Abby, was not a typical one. They had been looking into adoption for a few years, hoping to find another orange tabby after the passing of their last cat, Tiger. “One of our neighbors was unable to care for Abby anymore because the husband had unfortunately discovered he was allergic to cats. We went over to their house, and I fell in love with her immediately,” shares owner Virginia Bouknight.

We had a Q&A with Foxcroft's very own Wells Rappaport! Besides your passion for acting, we asked what are your hobbies and special interests? He said "I enjoy literature, diving into books whenever possible – especially military history, technology and spy novels. I’m also a big fan of martial arts, particularly Jiu-Jitsu. I have a passion for both singing and immersing myself in music. You’ll usually find me listening to classic rock or Broadway musicals."

Barclay Downs is home to a four-legged celebrity who goes by the name of Freddie Mercury Simmons. With his energetic antics and undeniable charm, Freddie has become a beloved member of the Simmons family, which includes Drew, Kate, Charlie, and Collins. Freddie, a spirited male boxer, recently turned 2, but he's been living his “terrible twos” since he was a puppy and still acts like a toddler.
