On Episode 110 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome artist, engineer, producer, and one of the best to collectively do it all right now out of MA: CASO.

CASO shares how influential it was to have a dad as a musician at an early age, which included trips to the studio and live shows when he was as young as 4 years old. Between that and the discipline he learned through his time as an infantryman in the Army as a young man, he’s been given the necessary tools to achieve greatness in the music industry, and his latest album ‘Thanks For Nothin’ is proof of that. CASO explains how his new critically acclaimed album is his proudest body of work to date, but not for the reasons you might think. He shares in-depth insight on the album’s creation and the many hands that were involved in its success.

CASO & Mike also discuss a variety of topics, including CASO’s dad performing voodoo before Red Sox games, CASO’s obsession with Harry Potter, the origin of the “Hey Now!” catch phrase, his surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, how PHX Down saved his life, and so much more.

On Episode 109 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome the one and only Gio Dee! Gio is one of the premier names in hip-hop coming out of Massachusetts right now, fresh off of his latest album called ‘Hardbody’, which is the first installment of a trilogy of albums, with the next two coming soon. Gio also just signed a deal with Roc Nation; you won’t believe the story of serendipity surrounding the circumstances of how that deal came to be. He also details an amazing story of how his song “Mind Your Business” went viral on Vine years ago.

Gio also tells us candid stories of his early days rapping, when he rapped a song about gum during a middle school talent show, to opening up for artists like Joyner Lucas, Lil U*i Vert, G-Eazy, Dom Kennedy, amongst others, and even going on a full 14-city tour with Iamsu!.

Mike & Gio also discuss a number of topics including the video games Gio loves to play with his son, and what video game he’d love to have a sync deal with, the connection between his artist name and his faith, reminiscing on the days he used to Krump, why artists should learn the basic language of audio engineering, and so much more.

On Episode 108 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome an artist we’ve been a fan of since before the inception of the podcast: Burlington, Vermont’s very own maari of 99 Neighbors! maari, formerly known as Sam Paulino, is one of the founders of the viral sensation that was 99 Neighbors, a collective of 10 creatives all from the Burlington area who became household names after their breakout album ‘Television’ in 2019. maari talks in detail how ‘Television’ changed the band’s lives, including the song “Champion” being featured on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’, to then moving to Chicago and being signed to Warner Records and Chance the Rapper’s management team. They were drawing numerous comparisons to other hip-hop collectives of the era, such as Odd Future and BROCKHAMPTON.

Alas, all good things must come to an end, as maari details the group’s recent decision to not release music together anymore at the conclusion of their 2021 album ‘Wherever You’re Going I Hope It’s Great’. He explains the desire for all of 99’s members to branch out and release solo music, which ultimately led to maari teaming up with fellow Vermont-based producer Es-K for his debut solo album ‘All Is Fair In Love & War’, a 10 track masterpiece which also features frequent Drake collaborator, Quentin Miller.

Mike and maari also discuss a variety of other topics, including the cultural importance of SoundCloud, their mutual admiration for Brockton, MA’s Van Buren Records, which artists he thinks are blending genres in the most creative ways, the state of Vermont’s music scene, the hilarious name of his first ever hip-hop group as a kid, the amazing moment he got to meet Tyler, the Creator, and so much more.

On Episode 107 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome one of Boston’s most prolific artists: rapper, singer, songwriter, poet, & performer, Najee Janey. With his upbringing consisting of influences from his musically gifted Dad, and Grandmother who is a published poet, Najee seemed destined to be the kind of artist he has become.

Najee talks in-depth about his latest EP ‘Break Free’, a body of work that instills a refined version of the poetically jazzy sound he’s coined for himself over the years, combined with a few new genres he dabbles in. He also discusses his reasoning as to why the project is exclusively available on Even.Biz instead of streaming platforms in an effort to take back full ownership of his art as an independent artist, while putting the power of its worth in the hands of his fans & supporters.

Mike & Najee also discuss a variety of topics, ranging from his appearance on the CBS Morning Show in Boston, to performing on the biggest of stages like Boston Calling & GLD Fest, to how sports and music are more alike than you’d think. He also shares a number of historical facts that will blow your mind, including how old the oldest mummy in the world REALLY is, his Mount Rushmore of most impactful individuals in human history, which ancient civilizations need more attention, and the oldest forest in the world is actually located somewhere in the United States (in a state you’d least expect it).

On Episode 105 of the Guest Speaker series, Mike sits down with the multi-talented singer, rapper, & producer Leo The Kind for a highly entertaining episode!

Leo shares how he got his start making beats on his cousin’s PS2 as a kid before his dad invested in a computer and production software for him. He started to make EDM music under the alias Imagin8, which ultimately led to him being signed to Heroic Records and getting a plethora of sync-licensing deals.

Leo has had the honor of having co-signs from Grammy nominated producers David “Swag R’Celious” Harris and Keithen “Bassman” Foster. He even shares a story of him selling his PS4 to buy a plane ticket to attend a Sony recording session in LA where he met JoJo and got the attention of Usher and his team. He also shares an amazing story of opening up for JoJo in Boston years later.

Since then, Leo The Kind has been one of the most consistent and well-known hit makers in the Boston scene, and has made waves nationally garnering sync deals from Nike, Hulu, Disney+, ESPN, & much more. Leo shares some of his sync game knowledge, and shares advice for independent artists trying to build sustainability with their artistry. Leo & Mike also talk about why GTA San Andreas was the best PS2 game ever, Leo’s favorite car models, what it’s like having a pet frog, and so much more.

On Episode 104 of the Guest Speaker series, Mike is joined by one of the Boston’s best hitmakers: Rosewood Bape. Rosewood discusses growing up between Matapan and the South Shore, and how his early experiences inspired him to start songwriting. He shares the story of how his first ever song “Taxi” made waves in Boston, and how he was able to follow it up with a string of successful albums, including ‘Diary of a Playboy’ with Jon Glass. And of course, his latest offering ‘Rose From Nothing’: a project littered with catchy songs from a variety of different genres and features, including CHAVO, $hayBand$, Hollywood Chris, HONEST, and Millyz, the latter of whom has been an important influence and support system for his career.

Rosewood also discusses the impact of his friendship with the late hip-hop star PnB Rock, and how he coped with his death. Mike & Rosewood have a candid discussion about the phenomenon that some artists are more celebrated for their achievements when they die rather than when they’re alive. Because of this, Rosewood makes it a point to give his flowers to those who have elevated his career who are still here, including the aforementioned Millyz and Jon Glass, hip-hop star Joyner Lucas, and videographer extraordinaire, Tanj. Most importantly, he reflects on his family, particularly his children, provide him with a sense of purpose and support.

Mike & Rosewood also discuss a variety of different topics, including tips on sync licensing, his favorite WWE wrestlers of all-time, the perfect spicy margarita, and so much more.
