On Episode 112 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome back Lynn, MA hip-hop artist Suriel back to the show, for his first in-person appearance on the podcast.

Suriel recently released a mixtape exclusively on his website titled ‘The Turning Point’, which is a call back to the glory days of the hip-hop mixtape era. Suriel discusses his reasoning behind not dropping the tape on streaming platforms, and the unique ways in which independent artists are trying to get their art through to fans in an era of over-saturation. Suriel also talks about an upcoming EP he is dropping later this year titled ‘The Shelter Tape’, an homage to struggles of his youth days.

Suriel also reflects on two huge performances he recently had, the first being an opening act for The Lox’s recent 30-year anniversary tour at Roadrunner in Boston, as well as being enlisted to Termanology’s 978 Show.

In addition, Mike & Suriel also do a deep dive into a plethora of music topics, such as the “Top 5 Rappers of All-Time” debate and why Nas sits at the top of their lists, their thoughts on Eminem’s new album, reasons why The Marleys are the greatest musical family ever, and so much more.

26/08/2024

On Episode 111 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome Kentucky-native country/bluegrass/folk singer/songwriter Kyle Ray! Kyle has been living in Boston for the last few years as a Berklee College of Music student, and since then has recruited a band of Berklee students, known as “Kyle Ray and the Hired Guns”.

With Kyle being the first Kentucky-born musician we’ve ever had on the show, we of course had to ask Kyle all about the contrasts between Kentucky and the south as a whole, and the New England area. He shares the story of his upbringing (and sometimes troublemaker ways) as a student who was bored by everyday school but enamored with learning about every genre of music he possibly could. He also boasts about the delicacies of Kentucky including its (in his opinion) superior desserts and sweet tea recipes.

Mike & Kyle also have a refreshing, in-depth conversation surrounding to what extent your upbringing should be seen as a part of your identity, whether you grew up rich, poor, or something in between. There’s an importance of not only reflecting on your own experience, but attempting to have empathy for others and their experiences allows for healing within yourself. Kyle candidly addresses his own opinion on this concept and how he plans on keeping his morality as his musical success grows.

Kyle and his band are gearing up for their performance at Bourbon & Beyond, Kentucky’s biggest music festival, September 19-21, and then followed by their biggest show in MA yet, opening for Angel Olsen on 9/23 at the Cabot Theater in Beverly.

Kyle also details the first and last time he ever recorded for a progressive metal band, the wild stories of how he met his bandmates, why cats are misunderstood, the best way to get tree sap off your hands, the best flavors of moonshine, and so much more.

On Episode 110 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome artist, engineer, producer, and one of the best to collectively do it all right now out of MA: CASO.

CASO shares how influential it was to have a dad as a musician at an early age, which included trips to the studio and live shows when he was as young as 4 years old. Between that and the discipline he learned through his time as an infantryman in the Army as a young man, he’s been given the necessary tools to achieve greatness in the music industry, and his latest album ‘Thanks For Nothin’ is proof of that. CASO explains how his new critically acclaimed album is his proudest body of work to date, but not for the reasons you might think. He shares in-depth insight on the album’s creation and the many hands that were involved in its success.

CASO & Mike also discuss a variety of topics, including CASO’s dad performing voodoo before Red Sox games, CASO’s obsession with Harry Potter, the origin of the “Hey Now!” catch phrase, his surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, how PHX Down saved his life, and so much more.

Full episode with CASO is available now on YouTube and all podcast streaming platforms!
