With a surplus of skin care brands and products to choose from, finding the right regimen may be intimidating – especially if you are seeking out brands that do not contain harmful or potentially harmful ingredients.

As a place to start, Kait Turshen, founder and owner of Slfmkr at The Van Aken District in Shaker Heights, which specializes in non-toxic or “clean” skin care and beauty products, recommends tips and products to help manage and minimize acne breakouts.

“At SLFMKR, we believe in bio-individual recommendations based on the likely cause of acne and/or breakouts, as well as a person’s skin type and current product regimen,” Turshen says. “In general, there are two key factors that cause acne and breakouts.”

There’s no signage, let alone neon. To identify the building housing Heritage Steak & Whiskey, walk to the front door and read what awaits you inside this swanky restaurant at Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere.

Beneath the eatery’s heraldic, elegant logo at 28869 Chagrin Boulevard is a framed box listing specialty cocktails, salads, appetizers, side dishes and entrées. One cocktail likely to catch your eye is the Bank Statement, a $17 vodka-based concoction also featuring fetching aperitifs. The establishment carries more than 400 whiskies, its most expensive a $350 shot of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 Year.

The steaks – if Doug Petkovic’s restaurant has a theme, it’s steaks – include a 40-ounce Porterhouse for two, served tableside, for $165. And while steak predominates, there are other offerings including salmon, duck and vegan options. This is not a destination for the faint of appetite, taste or pocketbook.

🎳 Mahall's is a Lakewood staple turning 100 years old this year, known for its bowling alley, concerts and music scene, cocktails and retro vibe. For Jstyle’s spring photo shoot, we headed to the recently renovated spot for a day of fun in the bowling alley and the many other cool spaces Mahall’s has to offer. Dressed in spring fashion (with a retro hint) from local boutiques Jstyle partners with, our models – all volunteers from the Cleveland Jewish community – perfected their rolls and their looks.

Svetlana Kertesz, COO of My Place Group which owns and manages the property, notes The Hiatus was inspired by a vacation to Miami where she stayed at the 1 Hotel with her husband, Chad Kertesz, founder and CEO of My Place Group.

🏖️ The design elements they saw on that vacation drove their mission to infuse the essence of the tropical resort, reminiscent of a destination more than a thousand miles away, into Beachwood. Their vision begins to unfold in The Hiatus lobby, where residents are welcomed by a striking two-story living wall, complemented by coastal-inspired accents and chic, neutral-toned furnishings.

🍝 Taking over the space at 3355 Richmond Road in Beachwood, Antica Italian Kitchen + Bar opened its second location on March 20. The restaurant is owned by Fadi Daoud, who also owns its sister and neighbor restaurant, Heck’s Cafe.

🍽️ Antica, which fills the space that was previously Red, the Steakhouse, serves handmade pasta, pizza, vegetable dishes and additional main courses authentic to different regions of Italy, using imported and locally sourced ingredients, according to a news release.

🥯 Nubeigel in Cleveland Heights is ranked the best bagel shop in Ohio by the Tasting Table media company. “The Best Bagel Shops In Every State” list was calculated using online reviews “triangulated with our own experiences and other professional reviews,” according to Tasting Table’s Feb. 29 article.

🙇‍♂️ “It is nice to have that recognition, but I think more than anything, it gives you a good opportunity to force you to do a lot of self-reflection and appreciate what you’ve done,” owner Josh Admon, a Zichron Chaim congregant and University Heights resident, tells the Cleveland Jewish News.

💍 Megan Piccione seeks inspiration for her handcrafted jewelry from fashion, nature and beyond. Her goal for her new Beachwood boutique, Megan Piccione High Jewelry, is twofold: making everyday jewelry “but elevated,” and developing haute couture pieces, she tells Jstyle.

📸 Piccione, who partnered with Jstyle for the spring photo shoot, takes a particularly hands-on approach to jewelry making. A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, she uses computer-aided design software to build custom pieces. She meets with clients by appointment to explore her gallery and invites them to work with her to design a one-of-a-kind piece.

✨ “It’s special because the customers feel like they’re really a part of the whole process,” she says. “And because it’s made by me 100%, I can send them photos of the process along the way and they’re like, ‘Oh my God, she really is making this by herself.’”
