On March 27, 2023, around 3:00 a.m., officers from the Spartanburg Police Department responded to a welfare check at 189 North Forest Street. When officers arrived, they met with the caller on the stairs of the Miracle Hill Rescue Mission. The caller informed officers that there was a man, possibly deceased, under a bridge, not breathing. The caller directed the police to an area under a bridge near North Forest Street and Clinton Street.

When officers and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived, they were escorted to a location under a bridge on North Forest Street. The victim was found to be deceased when officers located him. The victim appeared to have been struck several times with some type of blunt object. This incident was investigated as a homicide.

The decedent has been identified by the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office as Steven Shawn Smith, white male, age thirty-one (31).

There is no suspect information to release, therefore, anyone with information is asked to contact the Spartanburg Police Department at 864.596.2065 or call Crime Stoppers at 1.888.CRIMESC.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Involved in Manhunt for Wanted Fugitive

UPDATE: 5/24/23 AT 5:30PM —
SUBJECT IS IN CUSTODY. News media staging will be Halfway Creek Road and United Road for press conference.

UPDATE: 5/23/23 at 7:30PM —
Currently there are no updates regarding the search for Burham. Hundreds of law enforcement officials are continuing to search a large wooded area. Halfway Creek Road will remained closed to traffic from Steed Creek Road to United Road. Berkeley County is currently receiving assistance from numerous Lowcountry agencies as well as state and federal agencies.

“We are utilizing every available resource to find this fugitive. We have all hands on deck and we will not stop the search.” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis stated. “We are asking the public to remain vigilant. If you see anything suspicious, please call 911 or 800-CALLFBI. No tip is too small and could be helpful.”

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Tuesday, May 23, 2023) The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is currently involved in a manhunt for a wanted fugitive. Deputies are searching for Michael Charles Burham, 34, who was last seen in Huger.

At approximately 11 am, Berkeley County Dispatch received a phone call in reference to a concerned citizen seeing a suspicious male in the area of Halfway Creek Road. Deputies searched the area and located a male matching the description given in the area of S Hampton Road. Deputies made contact with the subject who gave deputies a false name and then ran from deputies on foot. Deputies did pursue the subject, but he was able to get away. The subject dropped a bookbag and inside were articles that confirmed Burham’s identity.

Burham was last seen wearing a gray shirt and blue and white shorts. He is described as a white male with facial hair, 5’09” and approximately 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and dark brown hair.

Currently, Berkeley County deputies are being assisted by the FBI, SLED, US Marshals, SC PPP, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, SC DNR, North Charleston Police Department, Summerville Police Department, City of Charleston Police Department and Mount Pleasant Police Department. Burham is being searched for intensively, by ground and air.

If anyone believes they spot Burham, they are asked to contact 911 immediately. DO NOT approach the fugitive, as he is believed to be armed and very dangerous.

On April 24, 2023, Officers with the Conway Police Department opened an investigation into a Breaking & Entering of Auto. Investigators identified the subject and obtained warrants. Mark Matthew Junior Chestnut Jr. of Aynor is wanted for three separate felonies. Breaking & Entering Auto, Credit Card Theft, and Credit Card Fraud. He is known to be armed and dangerous. Do not approach, and call the police if seen.
