For many years, native-born Columbian Juan Cristobal Cobo told stories as a cinematographer for films and documentaries , but when he felt he was losing touch with telling his own stories, he turned to still photography. His book, La Luz Opaca, documents the faded glory and resilient spirit of Bogota’s main thoroughfare in street portraits of astonishing power, empathy and insight. From the April 2022 issue: In 2009, Jason Langer made the first of multiple photographic trips to Berlin to try and “remember, confront and unwind my attitudes about Germans, Germany, Berlin, and my Jewish inheritance.” The resulting body of work is an artfully composed, psychologically probing portrait of the German capital, one that evokes the Weimar era, the twelve-year period under N**i rule, and the postwar era inclusive of present-day Germany. Focusing on surviving architectural remnants of the past and the faces of contemporary Berliners, Langer’s opus is a triumph of subjective documentary. (jasonanger.com) (bandwmag.com/contests)

From the Archives: January 2023 issue — Native Glaswegian Simon Murphy’s widely acclaimed street portrait series on the Govanhill section of Glasgow offers a deeply empathetic and illuminating look at this vibrant and ethnically diverse community. A former photographer for the city’s The Herald newspaper, Murphy doesn’t impose a subjective viewpoint on his subjects, but allows them to express their sense of self in a true collaborative effort. Here’s a peek back at our April 2023 issue, which featured work by the wonderful Meryl Meisler. (merylmeisler.com) It’s hard to think of another photographer with a body of work as effortlessly and organically idiosyncratic, outré, off-the-wall, outrageous, kinky, surreal, twisted, manic, and yet instantly relatable and universal as this native New Yorker. Meisler made her name with indelible Seventies photographs of discos, punk clubs, celebrities, friends and members of her own uninhibited and quirky family. Seen here is the photo “The Way We Were, The Mystery Club, North Woodmere, NY, January 1979.” (bandwmag.com)

From the Archives: Today’s image is a fantastic street portrait by Barbara Ramos, who we featured in the October 2022 issue. Ramos documented the gritty streets of San Francisco in the 1970s with a power and poetry that put her in the company of Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Lee Friedlander. Then she put her negatives away for decades before emerging several years ago with new work that’s every bit as powerful as her earlier work. (bandwmag.com)

One of our most popular recurring departments presents recollections from former assistants to Ansel Adams who went on to have prominent careers of their own. We call it All the King’s Men or All the King’s Women, depending on the individual. In the October 2024 issue we featured Mary Alinder, whose husband, Jim Alinder, is another notable fine art photographer. Mary had an especially warm connection with the legendary Adams and his wife, Virginia. Mary greatly appreciated Adams’ non-sexist attitude. “He treated me with respect at all times,” she says. “He listened to me, and he didn’t listen to a lot of people. He always interacted so generously with me, and was basically a very humble man.” (bandwag.com)

From the archives, April 2022 issue: A decade before W. Eugene Smith produced his famous photo essay, Japanese photojournalist Shisei Kuwabara (kuwabarashisei.com) documented the effects of mercury poisoning on the populace of Minamata. Kuwabara’s 1965 book Minamata Disease brought the subject to Smith’s attention, and Kuwabara provided vital assistance that enabled Smith to be able to photograph there. (bandwmag.com/contests)
