About the film:
Community members from St. Anns/ Fondes Amandes, Trinidad, work to regenerate and halt destruction of their natural environment that lies on the outskirts of the capital city.

Set in Trinidad and Tobago, this film takes us to Fondes Amandes, St. Ann's, a mostly residential area on the outskirts of the nation's capital where various community members come together to work to reforest their watershed and bring back its biodiversity. But they must also get creative to address the underlying issues that are fueling the lingering threat of wildfires. "My Watershed, My Home" (đŸ‡čđŸ‡č 2020, 22 mins, documentary film) is screening today, Wed. 11th May, at Hairouna Film Festival "LitterBug: These environmental films will open your eyes to the urgent conservation issues affecting our region."

Screening block starts at 6PM AST TODAY, with a Q&A to follow at 8:45PM.

Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP) and Foundation for the Bioregional Autonomy of the Orinoco Watershed will be representing the film in the Q&A!

ABOUT:
Set in Trinidad and Tobago, this film takes us into Fondes Amandes, St. Ann’s, on the outskirts of the country’s capital where diverse members of the community come together to work at reforesting their watershed, and on bringing back its biodiversity. But they must also get creative to address the underlying issues fueling the persistent threat of forest fires.

Akilah Jaramogi and her daughter Kemba, John Stollmeyer (Johnny), and Garth Pierre take us on this journey into their community, into nature, through the issues and their work, as they make their cases for why they do what they do, and also what’s at stake if we do nothing. In the film, we also see and hear “King Kobo”, Johnny’s rendition of the traditional Carnival character the Midnight Robber, who performs “robber talk” as a form of resistance against forces of oppression. The voice of the robber provides lyrical exposition to help frame the issues in the film.

This film is an exploration of the value of the environment and its role in community and culture, in a high-income developing country that is grappling with safeguarding its long-term economic and social well-being. It explores ideas of home, questions around development, and also provides examples of how communities can begin to take charge of the environments in which they live.

Featuring: John Stollmeyer, Akilah Jaramogi, Kemba Jaramogi, Garth Pierre, Jemac Francois, Julien Jeffrey Seeberath.

Exciting news: two of our films have been selected for Hairouna Film Festival

"Nearest Neighbours" is screening today, Monday 9th May, at Hairouna Film Festival's New Horizons: These powerful films depict fictional and real-life accounts of migration throughout the diaspora.

Screening block starts at 6PM AST TODAY, with a Q&A to follow at 8:15PM

ABOUT NEAREST NEIGHBOURS (2019, 22 minutes, documentary film):
Since 2015, at least 16,000 Venezuelans are confirmed to have fled to Trinidad and Tobago. The twin island republic is of one of the most economically viable options for asylum seekers, yet many are unaware of the reality that is to welcome them. Nearest Neighbours interweaves the stories of four main sets of characters: a journalist; a couple with three young children and their abuela; a woman who is living in a horse stable among other refugees; and a computer engineer turned construction worker and his family. The film explores how these refugees and asylum-seekers navigate their environments daily and work to move their lives forward amidst many unexpected challenges, including rampant xenophobia and a lack of legal rights due to the absence of local refugee legislation.

And on Wednesday at 6PM, look out for "My Watershed, My Home", screening in the block: "Litter Bug: Environmental Films from the Caribbean - These environmental films will open your eyes to the urgent conservation issues affecting our region". More info to follow.

'Newsday spoke with several Venezuelans about thelatest extension.

Carla Martínez said: “Thanks to God and to the TT government, those of us who have the work permit can rest easy for one more year.”

But she said she was a little disappointed that the exemption did not include other benefits.

“I have two children who are seven and nine years old and they are not studying. They have been here with me for three years and they are missing out on their education. I don't understand why the TT government still refuses to give migrant children the right to education,” she said.

Alfonso RodrĂguez was also grateful for the extra year to stay in TT, but said he expected more.

“It's been almost three years now that we have simple work permits. There are no other benefits like education and health, beyond emergencies,” he said.'
