Room 207 in the University Commons fills with gasps and whispers as students watch “La La Land.”

In the corner, an espresso machine hums.

Two students mix and create lattes, serve baked goods and chat with their friends-turned-customers.

Charlie Mack, a junior English major, and Kat Abraham, a senior creative writing major, work each week to prepare Mack’s apartment into a makeshift coffee shop where a movie of the week plays, drinks and pastries are served and students have a place to hang out until at least midnight.

Trevecca’s men and women Golf teams are off to a strong start this fall season, with a top five place finish from both teams in two tournaments.

On the men’s side of things, they have played two tournaments thus far – one in Virginia and the other in Mississippi. In Virginia, the men placed 12th overall and fourth overall in Mississippi.

“We are mostly focusing on our short game around the greens. Obviously, finding the fairway is a big thing but what we try to focus on is our wedges,” said Maddox Burton, junior men’s golf player.

On Dec. 6, 2024, just two and a half weeks before Christmas, the Dollar General on Lafayette St. in Nashville, Tennessee, permanently closed.

For some, this may just be another building closing, but for the 6,000 to 7,000 who live in the Napier and Sudekum low-income housing community, this was a major loss due to the lack of resources in the area.

“To see it now where we don’t have that part of our community, the barriers and how hard it is for people to have access to something that is a basic human need is just so hurtful, painful, and disheartening,” said Amanda Key, co-chair of the health and wellness committee for the Love Thy Neighborhood Collective.

On the street where grocery stores have diminished and crime has risen between neighbors, the smell of fried chicken and green beans slips through the weathered door of the restaurant Scrape the Plate. With just a kitchen and a few chairs set out to wait, Amber and Marquise Hill, co-owners of the restaurant, cook and serve food to customers sitting right outside as their youngest son clings to his mom's side with his Spiderman hat and crayon drawings.

“I haven’t made a dollar today, but I’ve got a smile on my face because I know what’s to come,” said Hill.

By the time Hayden Jordan is ready to go to bed after spending hours doing homework, it is already 2 a.m., and it’s time to take three melatonin gummies– four if they don’t hit hard enough.

Every day college students across the country suffer from sleep deprivation.

According to Shelley D. Hershner and Ronald D. Chervin, both who work in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan, about 50% of students reported daytime sleepiness, and about 70% had insufficient sleep.

The impact of insufficient sleep can result in lower grade point averages, increased risk of academic failure, compromised learning, and impaired mood.

McKenna Johnson, a junior biology major, finds it daunting to be filing taxes on her own for the first time this year.

“It’s intimidating to think about all the forms and numbers. It feels like one mistake could cost me a lot,” said Johnson.

According to a recent survey from CNET, 33% of Gen Zers said they feared making a mistake, 18% said they worried their information could be at risk to scammers, and 15% said they were concerned they would owe more to the IRS than they could afford.
