Space Echo Automation

One of the coolest studio toys I have is the Roland RE201 Space Echo. For those that don’t know it’s an analog tape delay with a spring reverb. There is something magical about this box. If you do some research you will find that it’s been used on countless recordings across lots of different musical genres. I’ve found it to be extremely versatile when it comes to different applications, whether it’s used heavy handed or just as a subtle blend. One of its many uses is going directly into a guitar amp or in the FX send/return to add depth and sparkle to your tone. It works great on vocals to add ambience or as a delay effect. It can make drums have a sense of depth and space, and make digital sounds come to life. A popular use is to automate the knobs while it’s recording, which is a unique and unrepeatable performance in itself. There aren’t a lot of pieces of gear that can inspire a performance like the space echo can. It combines really well with the Aphex Aural Exciter and can make it sound less muddy, especially if your tape loop is old. The video shows an example of how you can automate the spring reverb and the echo repeats.
