We're on the scene of an apparent shooting at a residence on Park near Copeland in Greenwood. According to eyewitnesses in the area a father shot his adult son. Injuries aren't reported to be life threatening. Most of the responding Jackson County deputies have departed so the scene is secure. There's nothing to see except 6 squad cars so please avoid the area.

We watched what we presume to be the suspect talking to authorities uncuffed. He was hauled away by the Chief uncuffed so we'll surmise this to be an accidental shooting based upon what we know of typical police procedure. But that individual may have been a witness being transported to give a statement at the cop shop. We won't know much until Chief Armer sends a text. So disregard our unprofessional guesses.

Greenwood Missouri Police Department will be interested in hearing from witnesses so contact them if you saw or heard anything. Greenwood PD statement follows:
"At approximately 5:45 this evening, Greenwood Police were called to a residence on Park Dr for a shooting that just occurred. Officers arrived on scene and located a victim at a nearby location. The person responsible remained on scene and was taken into custody pending investigation. The victim was transported to an area hospital and is being treated for what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries. There is not threat to the public and this was not a random event. Further information will be released when the investigation allows."

Kansas City suspected drug dealer charged with selling deadly drugs to woman

A Kansas City man who sold and delivered drugs to a woman who died soon after she ingested them faces felony charges in connection with her death, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

Vincent Scarcello faces Murder in the 2nd Degree and Delivery of a Controlled Substance.*

The Murder in the 2nd Degree charge, often known as Felony Murder, is based on the fact that the victim died of a fentanyl overdose that resulted from defendant's perpetration of the Class C felony of Delivery of a Controlled Substance.*

According to court records unsealed today, on May 3, 2024, Kansas City police were dispatched to a residence in the area of 53rd and Park Avenue. Emergency responders found the victim deceased inside. She was discovered by a witness who arrived home from work later that evening. The Jackson County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death to be Fentanyl, Fluorofentanyl and Ethanol intoxication.

Next to the deceased victim detectives found a half-opened box of Narcan in a failed attempt to save her own life, according to court records. Pills found inside the residence tested positive for fentanyl. The investigation found the victim had been in communication with "Vince Scarcello" on May 3, 2024. They made agreement for him to deliver "blues" to her residence, "Blues" are a common name for blue M-30 pills containing fentanyl. Video surveillance from the residence where the victim was found deceased showed the victim walking to a distinctive black sedan on May 3, 2024. She gets into the vehicle, which matched the description of the defendant's vehicle. A short time later, the victim dies from an overdose of fentanyl.

Further surveillance of the defendant appears to show multiple hand-to-hand drug transactions with cars near his Raytown home.

“This office has steered investigations toward dealers who cause such great harm in our community,” Prosecutor Baker said. “This defendant’s conduct will be aggressively pursued through the criminal justice system.”

The defendant was taken into custody this morning. Prosecutors requested a $150,000 cash bond.

*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty

Thomas Lyle Loy
September 7, 1965 - June 16, 2024

No obituary was available but we know Tom resided in Greenwood for much of his adult life until recently. He served in the Marines until working in fire service post-military. He retired from Lee's Summit Fire Dept as a Captain in 2023. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend to the publishers of the GreenSummit Dispatch for nearly 2 decades (while we lived across the street). Our community has suffered a tremendous loss.

Joint Statement from MoDOT and KDOT about KC Scout Services

Lee’s Summit, Missouri - KC Scout, a bi-state initiative between the Missouri and Kansas Departments of Transportation to provide travel and traffic information and service for the Kansas City metro area, suffered a cyberattack on April 25. For the past several weeks, efforts to restore KC Scout services have been underway.

On Wednesday, June 12, motorists on Kansas City metro highways will see test messages displayed on the highway digital signs. If testing is successful, real-time information should return to the boards in the next week. Returning real-time information is considered the first step to restoring all KC Scout systems and services.

Additional restoration efforts continue and include having the website operational, camera views available online, and camera stream access for media partners. An update will be provided as service restoration nears for both the public and the media.

The DOTs and KC Scout thank everyone for their patience during the service outage and as efforts toward complete service restoration continues.

The Kansas and Missouri DOTs remind motorists that emergency services are still available in Kansas and Missouri. Kansas Highway Patrol Motorist Assist Vehicle (MAV) continue to proactively run routes and respond to incidents in their jurisdiction. MoDOT Emergency Response Continue to proactively run routes and respond to incidents in their jurisdiction.

Immediate and critical traffic information impacting the KC metro area is being shared through modot.org in Missouri and KanDrive.gov in Kansas. While data is not available via KC Scout cameras, message boards or website, the Missouri and Kansas traveler information sites, apps, and phone numbers are providing traffic conditions and lane closures from rush hour, construction and crash information in the KC metro area.

Raintree residents are upset.

They don't believe they are getting results from law enforcement, their HOA or the prosecutor on a recent crime spree in their community. As reported by Fox, multiple stolen vehicles have been recovered at a house in Independence but nobody has been arrested. Why?

On Monday, LSPD arrested a suspect on burglary and assault at a Raintree residence in broad daylight.

Yet residents complain they haven't been able to convince their HOA staff to publish public safety bulletins to the community.

Petty car break-ins usually uptick in the summer when school lets out. But this doesn't seem to be that. What can be done in Raintree?

This was what dad memorized and recited of Jimmy Dean's song, "Drinking From My Saucer".

“I’ve never made a fortune and it's probably too late now. Oh but I don’t worry about that much, cause I’m happy anyhow. As I go along life’s journey I’m reaping what I sow. I'm drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed.”

“I don’t have many riches and sometimes the way is steep and rough. But I have 5 kids that love me and that makes me rich enough. Ah sometimes things go wrong and my faith gets a little thin. But then the dark clouds part and that old Sun peaks through again. So Lord help me to never gripe about the tough rows I’ve hoed. I’m drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed. And if God grants me the strength and courage, when the way gets steep and rough. I’ll not ask for another blessing, I’m already blessed enough. And Lord may I never be too busy to help another bear his load. And I’ll keep drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed.“

RIP
Sara Ring was a friend & neighbor to many of us and a public servant in Greenwood for decades. Whether you liked her ideas or not, she stepped up and gave of herself when others were unwilling. She'll be missed.

Sara Carolyn (Crow) Ring, began her life’s journey on September 27, 1933, born in Kirksville, Missouri to the wonderful and loving parents, Manning Clifton and Helen Lucille (Sanders) Crow, both deceased. Sara greeted her heavenly father on January 5, 2024.

The family lived on a farm five miles from town, and Sara was a full pledged “Country-Farm-Girl” her entire life, of which she was always proud!!! That’s where her love of animals and the great outdoors began. She loved the earth and all its beauty. Being an only child, her animals were her friends. Up until the death of Sara’s father in 1947, she pitched in with everything from milking the cows to driving teams of work horses in the fields during harvest season. Sara was proud to be an American, doing her part in World War II, by picking milk seed pods and selling huge gunny sacks full for 25 Cents each. These were used in making parachutes for the military. Her faithful pony, Sugar, assisted in this task, as she was hooked to a cart, which carried the bags filed with pods. Her love of horses and dogs never waived during her entire life, having ridden, and shown horses beginning at the age of 11 months. She owned her own “small spread” known as Zephyr Acres, for over 50 years in Greenwood. During the early years of her marriage to Norman, both held responsible and demanding jobs, but found time to join the Northwest Arkansas Cavalcade for October trail rides along with riding with the Raytown Trail Riders in the American Royal Parade annually for many years.

During the late 1940’s Sara was a member in a saddle club in Kirksville, Missouri and Participated with a group that preformed from four (4) to (8) sets of square dancing on horses. (FYI: square dancing, a “set” consists of 4 partners or 8 participants, so 4 sets are 32 participants. If 8 sets were involved, this would be 64 participants, all on horseback.) This group was invited to perform at festivals and horse shows in northern Missouri and southern Iowa.
