It's been a tough couple of weeks, full of exhausting battles old and new - but here's one Battle that we revised yesterday to much cheer. It's the Battle of the Books -- fought by some amazing Traverse City-area Michiganders that we met during our Impact Stories work with the Michigan Arts & Culture Council.

THIRTY years ago tonight, on 8/8/88, Bill Murray and Harry Caray got drunk in the broadcast booth -- a torrential thunderstorm scared the bejeezus out of Cubs players -- and Wrigleyville neighbors were on the lookout for public urinators ... all as the lights were flipped on at Wrigley Field for the very first time.
Listen to our doc for ESPN's 30 for 30 Podcast series - it's one of Long Haul Productions best moments under the lights, and we're really proud of it.

A few years ago, we did a story with the parents of a young, idealistic Marine who, after a tour in Afghanistan, returned home, suffered from undiagnosed PTSD, and took his life. That story proved that that the very best way we can remember our lost veterans is to take care of the ones that came home -- and to look out for their families. You can listen to the story below, but if you've got some spare change, think about donating a few $ to an organization that truly supports the thousands of veterans and families who need emotional support.

Missed it on NPR? No worries -- it's never too late to make the pilgrimage to The Dog Chapel (longhaulpro.org/stories/dogmountain). Take a virtual tour of the thousands of memorials visitors have left celebrating their dearly departed canine companions. And after you "visit," listen to "Dog Mountain: A Love Story" -- and hear about the artists who gave their lives following a dream. Preview below!

Dog Mountain was the life's work of two dog-loving dreamers, Vermont artists Stephen and Gwen Huneck. Tour the grounds, and find even more love stories in the Dog Chapel, where thousands of visitors have memorialized their beloved animal companions.

In a small New England town, visitors come to a tiny white chapel dedicated to the souls of dogs. But how it came to be is its own complicated love story.

As a change of pace, here's an International Red Cross piece we helped out with for StoryCorps.

Mike Durant is a retired U.S. military pilot and former POW who was held captive in Somalia for eleven days after his Black Hawk helicopter was shot down during the infamous “Battle of Mogadishu” in 1993. In his StoryCorps conversation with fellow veteran and ex-ICRC employee, Gary Brown, Mike recou…
