FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
*GRAND’s Press Statement on the Kush Drug Crisis:*
The Grassroots Action for National Development (GRAND) is deeply concerned with the worrying increase of drug-related deaths caused by the excessive intake of Kush in Sierra Leone. We recognize the urgent need for collective action to address this pressing issue and, equally, stand in solidarity with the victims of the ravaging effects of this drug and all Sierra Leoneans who, in several ways, have acted in protest to its sale, distribution, and intake.
As an organisation committed to upholding the values of human decency and to promoting the fundamental principles of Human Rights, we feel obliged and mandated to join this nationwide campaign against the “Kush” drug. We are conscious of the devastating effects that it has had on the lives of young people across the country and are equally aware of the endemic infestation of this drug in our society, especially within our grassroots communities.
The Kush drug and its widespread use threatens public health gravely and breaks apart the very foundations of our society. It destroys families, robs our youth of their future, and impedes the advancement of our country. GRAND stands resolutely against the proliferation of such harmful substances and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by drug traffickers.
We, therefore, call upon all stakeholders, including government agencies, law enforcement authorities, civil society organisations, community leaders, and religious leaders to join hands in tackling this crisis. We urge the government to implement stringent methods and strategies that are directed at extricating our communities from this dreadful drug.
GRAND remains committed to working tirelessly to promote awareness, advocate for policy reforms, and provide support to those affected by addiction. Together, we can overcome this challenge and build a healthier and more prosperous future for all Sierra Leoneans.
Grassroots Action for National Development (GRAND), is a non-profit, humanitarian organisation whose membership is open to all Sierra Leoneans. The objectives of GRAND include, but not limited to:
1. To undertake humanitarian and developmental projects and activities, specifically targeting the underprivileged, vulnerable and marginalised in our society, particularly women and children.
2. To promote and support good governance and the rule of law through advocacy, constructive criticism and awareness raising interventions.
3. To act as a pressure group to ensure accountability of government, government functionaries and other public servants.
