Joel W Smith Video production and live streaming tutorials, gear, tools, consulting, training, and system design. And that leads me to now.

I am passionate about telling stories through video and visuals. I have more than 16 years of experience in international broadcast television, filmmaking, and video production. I also enjoy teaching others everything I've learned in my career, from live video production to cinematic storytelling. I started doing video production in the summer after my senior year of high school. The year was 2000

, analog was still king and high definition was just a twinkle in its mother's eye. I began volunteering in our church's video department, learning all I could about camera operating, video directing, graphics, video editing, and everything in between. Shortly after that, I began freelancing in corporate AV and live television. I started out as a camera operator and grip, then quickly moved to directing, editing, and running camera cranes like JimmyJibs and CamMates. In early 2007, I took my first international trip with a client to shoot a documentary teaching series. For 42 days I traveled through 6 European countries, shooting in some of the most historic landmarks in the world. Since then, I have shot films and videos in 19 countries across 3 different continents. In the fall of 2009, I traveled to South Sudan with Water is Basic, a fresh water well drilling organization, to shoot a short film documenting a day in the life of a young girl named Jina Keji. We followed along as Jina walked six miles each day to get water from a muddy hole in the ground for her family. The film, titled Ru: Water is Life, went on to raise over $2,000,000 for the organization and win multiple accolades from many film festivals. In 2011, I began working at a young and growing non-denominational church in Texas as the media and tech director. I led all of the video production, media volunteers, graphic design, stage design, and web. For the next few years, I helped the church grow from one to two campuses (connected every week through live video streaming), add an entire multi-camera broadcast system, and grow the volunteer team from 10 to 30+ volunteers. At the end of 2014, after almost 4 years of working full-time for the church, I resigned to return to freelance video production and start this new phase of my career: teaching others everything I know about video and storytelling. This site is a result of many years, tens of thousands of hours, and a passion to help others learn new skills, find the right gear, and tell better stories. Fun tidbit for today: I found an error in the Apple ProRes white paper.

I thought I was going crazy for the last few hours, trying to figure out why the uncompressed data rates I get don't match up with this graph. Come to find out, it's as simple as the authors using the wrong resolution for the 10-bit 4:2:2 example. 🙈

1920*1080*29.97*36 = 2,237 Mbps (Apple is right)

1920*1080*29.97*20 = 1,243 Mbps (Apple is wrong)

Apparently they used the data rate for DCI 2K (2048 x 1080) instead of 1920 x 1080. 🥴

2048*1080*29.97*20 = 1,326 Mbps

Lesson: Even the big boys sometimes miss things.

Copyright issues on platforms like YouTube Live and Facebook Live have gotten much worse over the last year, there's no doubt about it.

Because of this, I have updated my live streaming strategy as well as added some considerations when choosing live streaming platforms in this article.

And if you haven't experienced any copyright issues, consider yourself quite fortunate. But also understand they do exist and can still happen to you - false positives and copyright trolls have also increased substantially on these automated copyright matching systems recently.
