Filming a spaceship launch sequence in a set firmly built on a concrete slab comes with some difficulties. Post-production will help make it look much more believable, but in-person it looks like the actor bouncing himself around in a still chair, the props girl wiggles a lantern that’s in-frame, and the grip swiveling lights outside of the window. 😅😂 Movie magic.

I thought it’d be fun to show how the first lines of the “same” story change depending on the format it’s told in!

Short stories, especially flash fiction (under 1k words), often have to start in the middle of the story and the action. They’re snappy. They have to hit fast.

Scripts are “dryer.” They’re written slightly more for the technicality of filming, and for the audience of a director who can read into the brevity and between the lines of dialogue to craft the vision into its final form. It doesn’t allow for long lines of prose or exposition.

Then there are novels, which have to hook you right away, but have to sustain that for a longer period of time. Which have to tell the story all on their own, without the aid of framing shots, lighting, or the subtleties of actors’ expressions.

So here are the first lines of Life Cycle 63 in all three formats!

(And side note, this post was not written by AI. It seems like almost everything I’m reading for captions these days is clearly AI, and I’m a little sick of it. But when you begin seeing so much “AI language” in your feed, does it leak a little into your own writing when you’re in the “caption” headspace? Will humans slowly sound more AI? That’s my random side-musing of the day.)

VFX BREAKDOWN | LIFE CYCLE 63

It can take all day for one person to create the VFX for a single shot. And that’s if they’re moving fast.
Here’s a short look at some of the elements that go into creating a partially CG background and adding/removing elements from a shot.
Step by step, from sky replacement to rotoscoping to creating assets, this is what VFX looks like. This is the work being done on on a daily based right now.

Rate this VFX job on a scale of 1-10 in the comments! ;)

Day Two of ’s last on-location film shoot!

The second day at the military base was all about filming!

The morning was filled with last gear checks and costume changes. The crew and the first actress on set headed out with the vintage car to get all of the driving shots for the scene.

Everyone broke for a late lunch as the younger actors arrived at the barracks with their families. After more costumes changes, everyone headed back out to the main filming location that had been set-dressed the day before.

Now there was a small race against time with the sunset. Nearly everything had to be filmed before it got dark, and there was one moment that had to happen as the sun set in the background. It was a busy 15-minute period as the sun sank!

But we got all of our shots, and they looked beautiful.

The scene is now edited together and in the movie timeline, so I can say with confidence that it turned out amazing! It still needs some CGI work, but that’s what’s happening now.

Stay tuned as we start posting more post-production BTS as this film gets closer to completion!

Filming the intro sequence for our indie film was squeezed into one day. The morning was filled with packing up our gear, the arrival of the vintage car we would use, and the first of the actors getting into costume!
The crew left the barracks and drove out into the range of the military base to begin filming around 10am.
The first shots of the day were all of the car driving down certain roads and arriving at the location of our small scene. It was a hot day out, but all went well.
The next half of the day would have the rest of the actors arriving on site for the full scene to play out!

The first evening at the Umatilla military training center was for our crew and Directors to plan out the locations and set-decorate a fence for one of our scenes.

We had several signs custom-made for the film shoot, and they had to be attached to the gate for the scene.

The fence was supposed to look mildly unkempt/abandoned, so the guys jumped into the field to wrangle some tumbleweeds. They then wedged them along the chain link.

The Umatilla base used to store military munitions and chemicals, so a military guide had to remain with the crew at all times while they were out filming in certain zones, and they had to radio in to the base on a set schedule to confirm they were still out in the “danger zone.” It was an interested experience for all, and we’re lucky that they allowed us to film there!

The crew all stayed the night in the barracks on-site, and filming began the next day!

It Is Finished…. Or, That’s a Wrap, Officially!! 🎉🎉
The intro sequence for Life Cycle 63 was never filmed, as we just didn’t have the budget to complete it. But it’s very important for the story, so we knew we had to get it into the film somehow. We debated making it entirely CGI, or even still oil paintings with audio cues.

But we were able to condense the 5 scenes down into one, and scrape together a budget for it. A tiny crew had a one-day shoot out at the Umatilla military training center with a vintage car, two new actors ( including a cameo from Phillip), and two stand-ins for our younger actors.

We got some absolutely beautiful shots, and now, finally, we can say that has been filmed in its entirety!

We’ll be posting more from this shoot, and more updates on post-production, which is on to asset-creation and the CGI process, so stay tuned!
