Those who love Bittu-Ki-Mummy, will not be able to recognise Sunita Rajwar in Sandhya Suri’s debut feature ‘Santosh’, which premiered during this Cannes.
I got chatting with Rajwar and Shahana Goswami about the prepping for the film, a police procedural set in a fictional North Indian town.
The film’s gaze is stark and unflinching, as we witness the landscape through their eyes. Here are excerpts from the conversation, a day after their Cannes screening.

One year already to this launch! There were many ‘launches’ after this one, but the first one is always so special. Really, time’s winged chariot keeps gathering speed. This is such a special book, because it is about such a special actor. Ok, enough specials!

After the press conference of . Kani Kusruti killing it with her choice of apparel.
The watermelon bag, which has made waves, wasn’t in evidence today but that’s all right, because we’re not going to forget it in a hurry.
Also in the frame, director Payal Kapadia, and behind her, Chhaya Kadam. Couldn’t catch sight of Divya Prabha in the crush, though.

Payal Kapadia’s is a quiet, harrowing, meditative soliloquy on loneliness and connection. I have a tingly feeling about this Indian film, in Cannes competition after 30 years.

Indian films are busy making a mark at this edition of Cannes. Here’s a quick Look at two : SANTOSH and SISTER MIDNIGHT, the first with Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, and the second headlined by Radhika Apte. Watching these two, I kept wondering if they will ever release in India..

Fascinating bio pic focussing on Donald Trump’s early years has enough warts to merit it being called objective. Ali Abbasi directs with finesse, and both Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor Roy Kohn are excellent

I haven’t been too complimentary about some of your films, I tell Naseeruddin Shah. Oh that’s all right, he says. We have a good chuckle over it. This came up while we were chatting about his first time in Cannes— yes he’s never been here before— the standing ovation at the end of the Manthan screening, and other things.

For those who have small feet like me, it’s always a challenge to find the right footwear. If I had a rupee for every time a salesperson told me aap udhar children’s section mein dekh leejiye—aargh—I’d be a millionaire.
Around the same time last year I had bought a pair of Steve Maddens, about the only brand that stocks things in my size, and within a couple of wears, the sandals acquired a scratch right in front where it was most visible.
Back at the store in the mall, the salesperson who had happily sold the pair to me just a few weeks before, washed his hands off it. Nothing we can do, sorry no exchange. It’s wear and tear. Wear and tear? In two weeks?? Came back seething, thinking dark thoughts about brands and their behaviour towards paying customers. Oh well. I put those sandals away.
So anyway here’s where the story picks up again, earlier this year. Passing by the store at the airport— I had time to kill— I stopped by, with full intentions to browse-not-buy, because hey, this brand had let me down. And I lucked into the this lovely gent, who got me an exact size ( this happens all too rarely), fished out the same in another colour, and— cheery on top, offered me a third pair, from his side. Which made it an offer I couldn’t refuse. Not just BOGO, but BOG3, three for the price of one. Did I need all those shoes? Of course not. Did I take them all? Hell, yeah!
A big shout out for the helpful store manager Tariq Hussain, who heard my sad Steve Maddens story, and with that unexpected gesture of generosity, won me over!
Looking forward to stopping by again, when I head out next week!! Do I need more shoes? Absolutely not! 😂

There are some film events which I really enjoy, and is on top of that list. Conversations and cinema, and, of course, films themselves, are an unbeatable combination. Here’s my piece on the tenth edition of the DFI-run event, which is slowly but surely ensuring that under-represented cinematic voices are coming to the fore globally

Two Indian entries make a splash . Kottukkali, P S Vinothraj’s terrific excavation of patriarchy, featuring Anna Ben and Soori Muthuchamy, and Raam Reddy’s magical realist tale, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Deepak Dobriyal and Priyanka Bose, which delves into questions of identity and belonging. Who, really, are we?
