Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to host Second Chance Success

The Ctrl+Alt+Del Program was formed by the Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney in 2015 with the purpose of providing resources to our formerly and presently incarcerated community members. Many other organizations across our state and region are committed to the same important goal, which drastically reduces recidivism and provides opportunities for our citizens to be successful.

Ctrl+Alt+Del in partnership with Tidewater Community College, the Virginia League for Safer Streets, Nolef Turns Inc. and PRR will present the Second Chance Success seminar to explain the status of the law pertaining to Second Look and expungement. The seminar will also provide information on resources for job preparedness, business formation and the re-entry process.

Date: Tuesday, December 19, 2023

Time: 6:00 p.m.

Location: Tidewater Community College Portsmouth Campus Room 202

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney welcomes all who may benefit from the information slated to be provided. There is no cost to attend.

He leads, he inspires, he teaches, he protects, he advocates, he activates, he legislated, he protests, he seeks redress, he is one of the most prolific catalyst and leaders of our era. He learns the way, he goes the way and he shows the way. He has been speaking truth to power, holding the powers that be accountable, changing the paradigm and and actively seeking equity for women and people of color while being a servant leader, before it was popular to do so.

He practices constructive dissent and walks it like he talks it.

He is one of the foremost dynamic leaders of our time, that is why, on November 18, 2023, PRR is presenting Dr. Wes Bellamy with the Vanguard Award at the 2nd Annual 757 Black Tie Gala.

If you're not ok with the erasure of either, sign our petition calling for the College Board to reject Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to block an AP course on African American Studies.

We owe it to students across the country to ensure they receive an equitable education.

Take swift action to make sure Florida does not modify the curriculum of the proposed AP African-American Studies course designed with the help of respected Black scholars.

Jeremiah G. Hamilton (sometimes Jerry Hamilton) was a Wall Street broker noted as "the only black millionaire in New York" by James McCune Smith about a decade before the American Civil War. Hamilton was a shrewd financial agent, amassing a fortune of $2 million ($250,000,000 in current dollars) by the time of his death in 1875. Although he was the subject of much newspaper coverage and his life provides a unique perspective on race in 19th century America, Hamilton is virtually absent from modern historical literature. Almost a decade later, after the 1835 Great Fire of New York destroyed most of the buildings on the southeast tip of Manhattan, Hamilton accrued about $5 million in current dollars by "taking pitiless advantage of several of the fire victims' misfortunes". His business practices were controversial; where most black entrepreneurs sold their goods to other blacks, "Hamilton cut a swath through the lily-white New York business world of the mid-1830s, a domain where his depredations soon earned him the nickname of "The Prince of Darkness". Although he circulated among the financial elite and was himself very wealthy (an equivalent fortune of around $250 million), Hamilton was also a victim of the racism against African-Americans, so pervasive during his time. During the New York City Draft Riots in 1863, white men seeking to lynch Hamilton broke into his house, but were turned away with only liquor, ci**rs, and an old suit by his wife Eliza after she said her husband was not home. Eliza Hamilton was white which made her marriage to Jeremiah taboo for the time. His life is chronicled in the 2015 biography “The Prince of Darkness”, by Shane White.
