Doctor allegedly r**es patient - evades arrest in Mount Ayliff

News Reporter

A medical doctor who is charged with r**e of a patient appeared in the EmaXesibeni (Mount Ayliff) Magistrates' Court in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

The 37 year-old doctor was arrested yesterday for allegedly ra**ng a 34-year-old patient, inside a consulting room in Mount Ayliff Hospital last week on December 8, 2022.

It is alleged that the patient was at the hospital for medical attention, when the incident occurred.

Eastern Cape National Prosecutions Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali said when the nurse left the patient with the doctor, he locked the door and demanded the she perform oral s*x on him.

"When the patient refused, he allegedly overpowered and r**ed her, said Tyali.

Tyali said when the nurse returned, she found the door to the consulting room locked and had to knock until the doctor opened.

"The patient allegedly ran out, visibly shaking and reported her ordeal to the nurse and her friend who had accompanied her to the hospital," said Tyhali.

The accused reportedly also evaded arrest until a later date.

The doctor whose name is known to The Bay Weekly cannot be named until he has made a plea before court.

The matter has been postponed to next week, 21 December 2022, for a formal bail application.

Jazz artists launch Brasskap Fest at home

Entertainment Reporter

Hundreds of jazz lovers converged at the intimately set up Boardwalk Convention Centre to witness the debut Brasskap Village Jazz Fest on Sunday evening.

Among the attendees, were local Gqeberha legendary Jazz artists and lovers like Feya Faku, Lex Futshane, Wela Matomela, Vuyelwa Luzipho, who is also T**i Luzipho's mother.

The uniqueness of the event was the line-up, which included a combination of local Gqeberha and Eastern Cape born artists.

One of the attendants, Kanyisa Milase, said - "the fest was a beautiful presentation of tasteful sounds,"

"A truly enjoyable selection, delivered with obviously deep passion for both performance and entertainment of music lovers," she said.

The curtain raising performance was delivered by Mlungisi Gegana who played a combination of his old and new music.

Thammy Mdluli, Dumza Maswana, T**i Luzipho, took to the stage with a kaleidoscope of performances wooing the crowds to soulful dancing and singing along.

Dumza Maswana defined the experience as, - "truly a blessing for me and a privilege to have been chosen by uncle McCoy Mrubata to be part of his festival,"

"But to also see jazz greats like Feya Faku, Lex Futshane in the audience made that night even more special for all of us," he gleefully said.

Futshane is a local jazz legend, he said he tastefully enjoyed the show, - "They played exceptionally well, I thoroughly enjoyed their presentation,"

Having performed at his own event in the Mendi Arts Centre on Saturday, Futshane said he wished for better audiences for events of this nature.

"I wish venues in PE could be filled with enthusiastic audiences because we absolutely love performing at home," said Futshane.

Futshane is an internationally proclaimed composer, arranger, educator, performer and bassist (electric and acoustic).

The Master of Ceremonies, Stan Mosia, yet another legendary MC and former radioshow host of the 80s, held the crowds together with the 411 on both artists and the event.

The apex of the fest was the trio performance by Luyanda Madope on the keyboard, T**i Luzipho on the vocals and their 'Uncle' McCoy Mrubata on his popular Saxophone.

Mrubata shared a story of his great love for Gqeberha, citing that the city was cautiously picked to be the host location of the Braaskap Village Fest, for many years to come.

"PE (now called Gqeberha) is home for me; my roots are here, even though I was born in Cape Town," he said.

Madope narrated how the fest was developed, after many years of working with and being groomed in the hands of Mrubata, 'Uncle' as he warmly calls him.

The fest, scheduled to kick off at 18h00 started an hour late and ended at midnight, making it five hours long.

McCoy Mrubata debuts the Flagship Brasskap Village Fest in Gqeberha

Entertainment Reporter

The legendary saxophonist, flute player and composer McCoy Mrubata announced the first Brasskap Village Fest which will take place at the Boardwalk Convention Centre on 11 December 2022.

The festival features a sizzling line-up that speaks to why the Brasskap Project was birthed.

A local award winning music powerhouse, known for her hit single ‘Being Woman’ - T**i Luzipo will take music lovers on an Afro Jazz melodious journey.

Joining in to bring the Brasskap Village to the Gqeberha shores will be Dumza Maswana, who will serenade the patrons with his deep soothing baritone sounds.

Maswana, a radioshow host with Umhlobo Wenene FM, is known for his fusion of traditional, spiritual, soul and jazz music - to create sonic experiences that inspire and heal.

The height of Maswana's career was when he was requested by Victor Ntoni's widow, Linda - to do an ensemble of her late husband's greatest songs.

Legendary McCoy Mrubata is among the musicians that will give festival goers an experience of a lifetime.

Luyanda Madope, another local pianist, composer, producer and musical director will set the stage ablaze with his live performance, where people will get a taste of his recently released music, among other offers.

Mlungisi Gegana, a double and electric bassist, band leader, and music composer is one of the faces people can look forward to seeing, performing live at the Boardwalk Convention Centre.

Bass Guitarist, Thammy Mdluli, is also among the greats who will be enchanting audiences at the Brasskap Village Fest.

Mdluli termed this "a momentous occasion", after 12 years of working on this concept.

"I am excited that what was once a dream to contribute towards bridging the gap between my contemporaries and making things easier for the young generations in music," he said.

He added that it will cut through the clutter of the industry, while learning from the older musicians, is coming to life," he said.

Mrubata said the project kicked off with workshops which allowed the aspiring musicians an opportunity to interact with older and experienced musicians.

He said it has been 10 years after the first album (in 2017), in Volume 1 and the subsequent volumes 2 and 3 of the Brasskap Project - "that Luyanda Madope and I decided on taking this project further and introduce The Brasskap Village".

"This will be a home to host events such as this one, as well as concerts, music workshops and masterclasses," said Mrubata.

The Fest is one of many to come, - "If we don’t take a stand for our youth, our future leaders, who will?"

Mrubata said it is best that a legacy is left for upcoming generations, - "and there is no better way than doing it through the powerful language that everyone speaks and understands – and that is music".

The event organisers said their intention is to make a legacy of the event and make it annual.

He said they will take it to all nine provinces with an aim to empower as many people as possible.

“We look forward to mesmerizing evening with our fans and supporters to contribute towards strengthening the music industry," he said.

He conveyed his gratitude to the partners,– "National Arts Council, The Boardwalk, Creative Blackground and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture - for seeing this project as a catalyst for change in our industry,” says Luyanda Madope.

After a two year dry season in entertainment, for festival goers, this will be an exciting opportunity to get out there and enjoy the serenading sounds and networking.

Hani murderer, Janus Walus, stabbed by inmates

News Reporter

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed the stabbing incident involving inmate Janus Walus.

Walus, a Polish national who had been serving a life sentence for the killing of Chris Hani, was granted parole by the Constitutional Court last week, while serving the 29th year for his crime.

Waluś was serving his sentence in C-Max Correctional Facility in Pretoria for the 1993 assassination of Chris Hani, General Secretary of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Waluś was refused parole four times, before the Constitutional Court ordered his release on parole on 21 November.

Spokesperson for DCS, Singabakho Nxumalo, said while he can confirm the stabbing - "the detailed incident report is to be provided at a later stage,"

"What can be stated at this point, is that inmate Walus is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care," he said.

It is alleged that Walus was stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit.

He further stated that stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment.

"This case will be investigated," said Nxumalo.

Walus's parole granting sparked questions around where he would go upon his release.

The 60-year-old Polish-born Walus had his South African citizenship revoked in 2017.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said that a decision was taken to grant Walus residence.

"The decision was taken in line with an undertaking that the Department of Home Affairs made during the court proceedings," he said.

Motsoaledi further explained that the decision served to ensure that he actually served out his parole period, which is two years, in South Africa.

"Were he to be deported to his home country upon his release, Walus would not be subject to the usual monitoring and conditions that accompany parole,

"South Africa doesn’t have jurisdiction in Poland".

Walus was expected to leave his correctional centre 10 days from the day of being granted parole.

The stabbing has occurred just two days before he officially becomes a free man.

Multiple random veld fires - NMB warns residents

News Reporter

The extreme heat experienced around the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has reportedly resulted in various fire incidents.

NMB officials said calls have been coming in on Tuesday, reporting vegetation fires in areas like Beachview, where two houses also incidentally started to burn.

More fires earlier reported came from the Bay West area; the fires started on Monday and reportedly not under control yet.

The serious fire outbreaks are in addition to numerous small fires that fire fighters are said to be attending to.

NMBM Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, Lawrence Troon said, - "at this stage the fire fighters are coping, despite the challenges of limited human resources," he said.

Troon confirmed that raging fires have been spreading in several parts of the Bay since Monday, blown stronger by the gushing winds.

“Our vegetation has dried out because of the drought and we had wind on Monday and today," said Troon.

A combination of the two weather conditions has been identified as the main reason in propelling the fires.

Troon said his teams are working around the clock to get more manpower, -"we have vehicles, but we are trying to get additional staff."

The Metro has called for calm and co-operation during this time.

No fatalities have been reported at this point.

However, the municipality has assured that ambulance services were made available for those affected by smoke inhalation.

Residents are urged to report fires to the municipality control centre on 041 585 1555.

Mother accused of killing four children unexpectedly dies

News Reporter

Nomboleko Noludwe Simayile, has unexpectedly died on Sunday.

32-year-old Simayile is the woman who is alleged to have bludgeoned her four children earlier this month.

Police said Nomboleko Simayile, who had been in police custody, died on Sunday.

On Friday her case was postponed in the eNgcobo Magistrate's Court, after she was transferred to hospital, following her falling ill in the holding cell.

The court postponed the matter in her absentia and the next appearance scheduled for November 29.

In her submission, Prosecutor Lindelwa Totyi told the court that the state intends applying for the accused to be referred observation in accordance to Section 77 of the Criminal Procedure Act on her next appearance, as there is reasonable suspicion that she is not mentally fit to stand trial.

It is alleged that on the morning of Wednesday, 09 November 2022, the accused told her father that she had killed her two boys and two girls, aged 11, 9, 5 and 2.

They had been sleeping with her in a rondavel at their homestead at Tsalaba Area in the district of eNgcobo.

Her aged parents were sleeping in a separate flat within the same homestead.

The father then alerted his wife and summoned the community members after making the gruesome discovery of his grandchildren.

All of them had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer.

Maimane targets Eastern Cape as first province to launch BOSA

Politics Correspondent

The Eastern Cape, with its plethora of challenges and crises of poor quality governance seems to be a honey pot that attracts bees of all sorts, from near and far.

In the beginning of the year, Action SA's Herman Mashaba with former democrat Athol Trollip in tow, made his way to Gqeberha and announced his plans to take a chunk of the stake in provincial politics.

On Wednesday, his former fellow democrat Mmusi Maimane gathered over 500 of Nelson Mandela Bay residents at the historical political venue – Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Gqeberha, to witness the launch of Build One SA (BOSA).

Disrupting local doomsayers who had already written off the launch in social media; the residents of the Nelson Mandela trickled in one by one and filled the chairs on the ground floor.

When BOSA President Mmusi Maimane and Chairman Mkhuseli Jack recently made an announcement that they would be joining hands to contest the national political landscape in the 2024 national elections, many local folk wrote them off - citing desperate politics and hunger for political power.

A blended audience of young and old from the traditionally disadvantaged northern and southern townships of Gqeberha danced and sang along, as they waited for the launch to kick off.

There was a notable presence of local political activists and role players who also attended the launch, they came from old and new political parties, like the ANC, SACP, Northern Alliance and AIM.

Whether they came to assess, support or weigh themselves against the competition will remain a mystery.

BOSA brought an A Class entourage of its leadership, but which included Steve Biko and Mamphele Ramphele's son, Hlumelo Biko. Biko is BOSA's CEO.

Strong Ancestral links to the EC

BOSA Deputy President Nobuntu Hlazo said besides their strong collective ancestral grounding in the Eastern Cape, their reasons for prioritizing the EC was its rich heritage, which has landed in the hands of thieves.

“The partnership between AIM and BOSA in the Eastern Cape was motivated by our deep rooting and strong ancestral links in the Eastern Cape,” said Hlazo.

Maimane always prides himself as being the son of his mother MaDuna of Tsomo in the former Transkei; Biko is the son of Steve Biko of the AmaGcina clan; Hlazo of the Mpafana clan; Mkhuseli Jack of the Mpinga clan.

No saviour coming for us, it is us

Hlazo urged the audience to put their future and that of their families amd communities in the forefront.

"We are the ones we are waiting for, no one will save us but ourselves," she said as she delivered her address.

She encouraged communities to live beyond their own interests, and for the future, so the EC can look different from its current status of decay.

New Stars born every day

Maimane said it is no coincidence that the greatest leaders in South African politics come from the Eastern Cape.

“People like Oliver Tambo knew what they were fighting for,

“There are always new stars born in South Africa,”

He said bigger stars had been born before, - "but the sad thing about those superstars that came is that when they died, what is left are deep down inside thieves”.

“Deep down, I do not believe Nelson Mandela would vote for the ANC today,” said Maimane.

An image of a sinking province

Statistics of the decay of the Eastern Cape were not ignored by Maimane.

He lashed out at the rot that the province has become citing 46% of households that continued depending on household grants.

Maimane said government has become a god that decides who should breath, when and how - they decide who will eat what and in what portions.

There is an ever growing level of concerning unemployment in the EC which currently, -

"Unemployment is standing 51,8% of unemployment in the EC," said Maimane.

"The Hawks are investigation R3, 1 billions worth of corruption in the Eastern Cape,"

"These politicians are extremely corrupt, they are thieves, they are parasites, ngamaphara".

He further said that the people of South Africa should not despair and be engulfed by the difficult circumstances that seek to drown them.

"When it’s dark, it’s a moment for stars to shine brightest," he said.

BOSA here to build

He said what he learned in politics is that politics made politicians more important than the people that put their faith in them.

Let’s talk about change, now is the time to build.

"Let's build together, if you are here to steal there is no place for you here,"

He encouraged the audience to choose people they personally know and those they can attest for, when they choose political leadership.

"You must choose people that you will be able to remove when they are not doing what is right," said Maimane.

"Let us say to the thieves Bye-Bye Masela,"

"BOSA ke wena [BOSA is YOU]".

When BOSA and AIM formed a partnership, many people were asking how things would work out, especially for AIM.

Community builder, businessman and Abantu Intergrity Movement member, Alan Straton said the partnership between AIM and BOSA will work well for AIM.

"It's very nice that AIM has a partnership with an organization that has a national footprint and same aim," he said.

Straton said AIM has always centred its ideals around each person having the power, in their hands, to change everything.

"Mmusi has confirmed today that BOSA shares the same ideals, for people to use their rights to make a change out of this decay," said Straton.

Columnist, rugby coach and environmental and peace specialist Gary Koekemoer, who is AIM's Secretary General said AIM doesn't currently have the capacity to engage in national politics.
"This partnership gives us the leverage we need to engage on the broader scope of South African politics,"
"The Eastern Cape and broadly South Africa have great potential, but they are broken now and people is gradually forgetting about this great potential," said Koekemoer.

Maimane has encouraged Jack to continue working well with Nelson Mandela Bay's executive mayor, Retief Odendaal citing that his heart is in the right place to salvage the crisis the Metro has been caught up in, over the past year.

Jack is currently serving as the deputy executive mayor to Odendaal, in the latest coalition of the Nelson Mandela Bay.
