By Joe Wilson The days are long, cicadas loud, the DCRPeople scattered to jobs and internships and sunny vacations. Yes, it’s officially (according to the Registrar, at least) summertime! We wish to offer congratulations to all recent graduates, but especially to Candela Cerpa and Kathryn Cunningham. As Editor-in-Chief of the Carolina Planning Journal and Managing Editor of Angles, respectively, Candela and Kathryn have worked hard over the past year to put together a journal and a blog packed full of thought-provoking reportage....

By Sawyer Husain Revitalizing Midwest Cities: Turning Riverfronts into Catalysts for Urban Renewal Midwestern cities, often lacking the natural allure of coastal landscapes like those in Seattle or Miami, face unique challenges in urban planning and revitalization. Without an ice-age on the calendar or a mass flooding event, Midwest cities are left to make do with the natural environments they have....

A Case Study of Weaver Street Market By Kathryn Cunningham In these turmoil times, we need to hold the things we love close to us. And we also need to hold them accountable. I love Weaver Street Market - its colorful chairs, proximity to good food and fun drinks, and overall mission. I am not alone in this feeling: Weaver Street Market's lawn is a beloved gathering space in Carrboro....

By Nina Clark Introduction Capital injections by public and private investment to catalyze the revitalization of long neglected communities is often lauded as a process that saves struggling neighborhoods. Local politicians and development practitioners tout reductions in blight, improvement in infrastructure, high wage jobs, and increased amenities as clear indicators of a city’s success. Yet, for many low income communities, such changes bring about a type of reinvestment in their neighborhoods that often invoke worry instead of celebration....

By Sam Hayes I love digging into the history of the built environment of places I live in. It enriches my understanding of the area, and gives me a greater appreciation for it. However, in any circumstance, I find that is only so much that you can learn from books and the internet, and the most helpful thing one can do is walk around and look at the buildings....

By Nicholas Stover The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), colloquially referred to as the COP Summit, recently concluded its 28th congregation. Official tallies from the UNFCCC had around 85,000 delegates in attendance, with some estimates as high as 100,000. I had the great fortune of being a virtual delegate among the many thousands....

By Sneha Bora Purchasing your first home is a major milestone that requires immense preparation and guidance. Before embarking on your housing search, you’ll want to have a crystal-clear understanding on the step-by-step process and responsibilities required to make this exceptionally worthwhile investment. Though the upfront effort is demanding, I promise the payoff of homeownership far outweighs the complexities along the way!...

By Anthony Buckley I grew up on an 83-acre cattle farm and went to a public high school surrounded by cornfields. Rural southeastern Ohio is the place I call home. Many might ask where urban planning comes into play in an area that had 700 people in its village center. Ohio countryside is by no means comparable to the streets of New York City or even the neighborhoods of Chapel Hill or Durham....

For this Halloween, CPJ is bringing back a spooky article from 2017 on the value of zombie preparedness. Zombies have become a fixture in literary and cinematic culture over the past century. The list of on-screen zombie productions is extensive, ranging from White Zombie in 1932 and Night of the Living Dead in 1968, to this year’s Patient Z and dozens of others in between....

By Ryan Ford It is time to realize our parks are not free and Oakland residents already pay for them in one form or another. Lake Merritt is no exception. In 2020, the city spent $25,000 week of taxpayer money to maintain Lake Merritt (Devries 2021). It turns out littering has a cost and residents are already picking up the tab....
