Protests Mount Against Cape Union Mart's Support for Israel

Pro Palestine demonstrators were seen at shopping centres across South Africa on Saturday to voice their outrage against Cape Union Mart Stores, accusing the retail giant of supporting the Israeli Apartheid and violence against Palestinians The protests were organized by various pro Palestine groups and garnered significant attention from the public.

The demonstrations focused on Cape Union Mart Stores, with protesters accusing the company of actively supporting the killing of innocent Palestinians. According to Shaykh Sayed Ridhwaan, an Executive Member of the Cape Town Ulama Board, Cape Union Mart is seen as a Zionist corporation in South Africa. Shaykh Sayed further added: "We believe that Cape Union Mart is complicit in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, and as a result, we can not stand idly by.

The situation in Palestine is dire, with innocent lives being taken on a daily basis. The systematic oppression, violence, and displacement of the Palestinian people is a gross violation of human rights, and we can not ignore the role that companies like Cape Union Mart play in perpetuating this injustice."

Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), who was present at the protest, has taken a firm stance against Cape Union Mart, calling for a boycott of their products. Professor Usuf Chikte, a key figure in the PSC has highlighted the alarming issue of Zionist oligarchs and other companies being complicit in acts of war crimes and what is described as a text book case of genocide against Palestinians. Prof Chikte emphasized the need to boycott Cape Union Mart, as the funds generated from the sales of their products raised in South Africa is reported to fund the Jewish Agency for Israel and other zionist networks which enables, defends and funds the crime of apartheid in South Africa, the illegal settlements and the relentless war against Palestinians.

Many organizations, fueled by their outrage, have organized nationwide protests to draw attention to this matter. According to Prof Chickte, "These demonstrations aim to pressure Cape Union Mart into ceasing their support for such acts of violence, including bombings of hospitals, schools, refugee camps, churches, and mosques. The PSC is unwavering in their commitment to ending what the Cabinet of South Africa referred to as a "holocaust" of, as well as genocide and apartheid perpetrated against Palestinians by the Israeli regime."

The demonstrators believe that by boycotting the company, they can send a clear message against the support of Israeli violence and help contribute to the cause of justice for Palestinians.

In a social media statement, The Cape Town Ulama Board applauded the efforts of those who are using their voices and actions to raise awareness about the complicity of Cape Union Mart and called upon Cape Union Mart to listen to the voices of the people and take immediate action to end their complicity in the oppression of the Palestinian people.

The protests against Cape Union Mart Stores occurred simultaneously in other major cities across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Paarl, Cape Town, and Durban. The demonstrations were totally peaceful, with participants holding up banners, chanting slogans, and demanding justice for Palestine.

The issue of Palestine has long been around, with supporters of the Palestinian cause advocating for the end of Israeli occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state. The protests reflect the growing global concern and solidarity for the Palestinian people, as well as the desire for accountability from corporations supporting the Israeli apartheid state.

As the situation in the region continues to escalate, with violence intensifying and civilian casualties rising, it is likely that the pro Palestine movement will gain more momentum worldwide. The protests outside Cape Union Mart Stores serve as a reminder that the issue is not only confined to the Middle East but has repercussions and consequences globally.

The demands for justice, accountability, and the end of violence in Palestine are unlikely to fade away, and pro Palestine activists will continue to rally until their voices are heard and significant change is achieved. It remains to be seen how Cape Union Mart will respond to these calls and whether it will take any steps to address the concerns raised by pro Palestine supporters.

Islamic clerics criticize Mayor's silence and call for solidarity against Israeli apartheid

Cape Town - The Cape Town Ulama Board has sent a strongly-worded letter to Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill Lewis, expressing their disappointment and concern over his silence regarding the ongoing genocide in Palestine. The Islamic clerics have also called on the mayor to join the ranks of humanitarians worldwide and strongly condemn the apartheid state of Israel.

In the letter, the Cape Town Ulama Board highlighted the urgency and gravity of the situation in Palestine, where innocent civilians, including women and children, are being mercilessly targeted and killed by Israeli forces. The clerics criticized Mayor Lewis for failing to use his position and voice to speak out against these atrocities.

"your silence on this matter has left us questioning your position and commitment to human rights." the letter read. "As the mayor of Cape Town, your position carries significant influence, and your voice can make a difference in raising awareness and advocating for justice for the oppressed Palestinians."

The Cape Town Ulama Board emphasized the need for global solidarity and collective action in opposing Israeli apartheid and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. They urged Mayor Lewis to align himself with the many humanitarians across the world who have spoken out against the violence and injustice in Palestine.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, international pressure on Israel to cease its aggression in Palestine has been mounting. Numerous world leaders, human rights organizations, and activists have condemned the violence and called for an immediate end to the genocide. The Cape Town Ulama Board hopes that their letter will spur Mayor Lewis into action and encourage him to use his influence to raise awareness about the plight of Palestinians.

The Mayor's Office has not yet responded to the letter from the Cape Town Ulama Board. However, their message serves as a reminder that silence in the face of injustice is not an option, and that global solidarity is needed to bring about lasting change and an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people."

this section, followed by Ra-eez Nackerdien and Raees Hoosen from Cape Town.
The recitals were judged in accordance with strict international standards by a panel of
qualified and proficient Qur’aan recitation experts. Sheikh Muhammad Saabir Mutawalli
from Egypt and Sheikh Ismail Berdien from Cape Town evaluated the sections of
Tajweed. Both scholars have done advanced studies in the sciences of Quran recitation
and has taught many students to their credit. Egyptian Qur’aan reciter, Muhammad
Salaah Sha’rawi judged the section of voice whilst the Iraqi Qur'aan master, Sheikh
Hussein Al Barzanji was responsible for the section of Presentation. Among the many ulama present, Sheikh Zaid Langa and Sheikh Arshad Mohamed from Gauteng
represented the Moroccan based, Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulama.

The programs were directed by Haafidh Raees Hoosen (Cape Town), Qari Muhammad
Tikly (Northern Natal) and Sheikh Shaakir Bhyat (Johannesburg), The event was run
under a theme called, Grant a wish, which is one of the current campaigns of Africa
Muslims Agency. The verses recited by the contestants were carefully selected in
accordance with the theme and expounded upon by the respective program directors in an
effort to promote care for the needy and destitute.

A further program with the international guests will be held tomorrow at Masjid Tuba,
Panorama, before the group departs to Kwa- Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng for
Qur’aan recitation events at various mosques.

Founder member and head of the organising committee, Sheikh Muntahaa Kenny,
considers the event successful in its aims by which it hopes to recognise local talent and
develop it to international standard. The inclusion of international reciters continues to
bring a different dimension to the program, he believes. With contestants coming from
Tanzania, etc., it broadens the development and experience of local and international
Quráan reciters whilst adding to a continued high level of healthy competitiveness among
the youth. Whilst this year’s event did not include a female component as in previous
years, the development of female Qur’aan reciters remains important for the organisation,
he said.

The IQRA 2023 was supported by the MJC’s Department of Quranic Affairs, Cape Town
Muslim Events, Rygate Tactical Solutions, Channel 4 SA productions, Bagazio, Akays
Photos, MRM sounds and Honey’s stationers.
The organisers (being South African Qur’aan Union, Madrasah Tarteelul Quraan, Awqaf
SA, Africa Muslims Agency, in conjunction with the Parkwood Estate Islamic Society)
expressed their thanks and appreciation to all the role players that contributed to the
success of the event while at the same time underlying the need for greater support for
future projects of this nature. The organising committee, under the leadership of Sheikh
Muntahaa Kenny, invites other institutions to partner or support them in preparing for
next year’s IQRA.
