Organised by the South African Qur’aan Union, Madrasah Tarteelul Quraan, Awqaf SA,

event is used as a platform to train upcoming local reciters for international competitions
and to maintain high standards of recitation.

The recitals were judged in accordance with strict international standards by a panel of
qualified and proficient Qur’aan recitation experts. Sheikh Muhammad Saabir Mutawalli
from Egypt and Sheikh Ismail Berdien from Cape Town evaluated the sections of
Tajweed. Both scholars have done advanced studies in the sciences of Quran recitation
and has taught many students to their credit. Egyptian Qur’aan reciter, Muhammad
Salaah Sha’rawi judged the section of voice whilst the Iraqi Qur'aan master, Sheikh
Hussein Al Barzanji was responsible for the section of Presentation. Among the many ulama present, Sheikh Zaid Langa and Sheikh Arshad Mohamed from Gauteng
represented the Moroccan based, Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulama.
The programs were directed by Haafidh Raees Hoosen (Cape Town), Qari Muhammad
Tikly (Northern Natal) and Sheikh Shaakir Bhyat (Johannesburg), The event was run
under a theme called, Grant a wish, which is one of the current campaigns of Africa
Muslims Agency. The verses recited by the contestants were carefully selected in
accordance with the theme and expounded upon by the respective program directors in an
effort to promote care for the needy and destitute.
A further program with the international guests will be held tomorrow at Masjid Tuba,
Panorama, before the group departs to Kwa- Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng for
Qur’aan recitation events at various mosques.
Founder member and head of the organising committee, Sheikh Muntahaa Kenny,
considers the event successful in its aims by which it hopes to recognise local talent and
develop it to international standard. The inclusion of international reciters continues to
bring a different dimension to the program, he believes. With contestants coming from
Tanzania, etc., it broadens the development and experience of local and international
Quráan reciters whilst adding to a continued high level of healthy competitiveness among
the youth. Whilst this year’s event did not include a female component as in previous
years, the development of female Qur’aan reciters remains important for the organisation,
he said.
The IQRA 2023 was supported by the MJC’s Department of Quranic Affairs, Cape Town
Muslim Events, Rygate Tactical Solutions, Channel 4 SA productions, Bagazio, Akays
Photos, MRM sounds and Honey’s stationers.
The organisers (being South African Qur’aan Union, Madrasah Tarteelul Quraan, Awqaf
SA, Africa Muslims Agency, in conjunction with the Parkwood Estate Islamic Society)
expressed their thanks and appreciation to all the role players that contributed to the
success of the event while at the same time underlying the need for greater support for
future projects of this nature. The organising committee, under the leadership of Sheikh
Muntahaa Kenny, invites other institutions to partner or support them in preparing for
next year’s IQRA.
