Our Story
Empath Directorate (EMP-D) is a record label and creative collaboration formed by Steve Hanford and Sam Redding in 2012 while both were incarcerated at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton, Oregon. Between 2012 and 2016, while navigating a hell’s broth of prison violence and politics, institutional strictures, bureaucratic inertia and limited equipment, Steve and Sam produced, recorded and mixed 13 albums of original music spanning a wide range of genres and featuring the songs and talents of a rotating cast of inmate musicians.
The present mission of Empath Directorate is to release the 13 album EMP-D prison catalog in chronological order. Beyond that, Empath Directorate Records will foster, develop and record underground music of all sorts.
It is their desire of to draw attention to the importance of music and art in humanizing prison environments. The urge to create is common and essential to all humans, and in prison musical and artistic processes provide a means by which participants can grapple with the often conflicting forces of the psyche in ways that foster personal integration and growth. The first release will be a sampler comprised of 13 songs, one from each of the albums recorded at EOCI. It will be released in vinyl and digital formats.
All of the cover art for the EMP-D prison catalog was done by incarcerated artists.
