Script Supervising Awards An online awards "show" for script supervisors

After the Oscars, Globes, and SAG Awards are handed out on TV, and then in non-televised awards shows, the WGA, DGA, ASC, Costumers Guild, Editors Guild, Sound Editors, and countless other groups have handed out their awards, there still remain hundreds of crew members working in jobs that receive no recognition during awards season, other than the generic "thanks to the crew" that some winners ar

e decent enough to shout out. This page is for the script supervisors who have helped guide award-winning films from the set, to the editing room, to the big screen.

The Script Supervising Awards: Episode 6:
The Razzie Winners!

Before we honor the script supervisors from the Oscars, let's give a round of applause to those who didn't invite their moms to see these movies.

The Golden Raspberries, aka The Razzies, are here to salute the worst movies and performances of the year, and the five script supervisors who tried their best.

I must add (every time) that a film winning a Razzie is in no way a reflection on the script supervisor. The powers that be never listen to us.

This year’s Yin & Yang Award goes to the script supervising department from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Oscar nominated for Best Original Musical Score and Razzie nominated for Worst Screenplay and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off Or Sequel: Sheila G. Waldron, Laura Miles, Carly Romberg, Nicoletta Mani, Kaya Moore, Emily Richardson Fallow & Angelica Eileen Gayle

For better or worse, didn’t win either one.

I really want to watch the Winnie the Pooh horror film. This is what happens when you let your intellectual property fall into the public domain, and I'm here for it.

Special shoutout to Megan Fox for sweeping the Actress categories.

The Script Supervising Awards:
Episode 5: Oscar Nominations!

Here we go! Marching toward the end of the season with the nominations for the big show. The Super Bowl of the movie business. Or an overblown ego fest. Your mileage may vary.

But either way, it’s time to honor the 68 script supervisors who worked on the 33 films nominated for 20 awards.

Fun Fact: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One had ELEVEN script supervisors.

The 2024 Script Supervising Awards: Episode 4!
Razzie Nominees!

Reminding us to not take this job and business too seriously, the Razzies have once again "honored" the worst movies and performances of the year. Hopefully this is taken in good humor. These nominations are in no way a reflection on the skill level of the script supervisors below. The knuckleheads who made these films just refused to listen to us.

I have mixed feelings about the Razzies. Sometimes they're hilarious with who they nominate, other times they can be cruel and immature, and are often accused of merely "piling on" to a critical flop without actually watching it. If anyone is upset for being included, just enjoy the notoriety. You're not really in show business until you've worked on a disaster. I’ve done three Razzie movies. But none this year, darnit.

Winners will be announced March 9, the day before the Oscars, but for now, here are the 56 amazing script supervisors who tried but could not save these 17 masterpieces.

The 2024 Script Supervising Awards: Episode 3
The Independent Spirit Award Winners!

The awards season is heating up, with a different awards show each weekend, sometimes more than one, with a few thrown in on a weekday. We ignore a lot of them, which is why this is only our 3rd episode out of 7 this year. After the Spirit nominees, and the Peoples Choice Award Winners, today we honor the 20 script supervisors who took a few notes on the 13 projects that brought home a Spirit Award in a ceremony held February 25. And when I say 13, there were 17, but the 4 without script supervisors, we don’t invite them to the picnic.

And let’s give a Spirited Salute to the Most Spirited Script Supervisor of the Year, Rebecca Robertson, without whom we wouldn’t have The Holdovers or May December. Rebecca is best known for saving a little-known ultra-low budget indie film called Iron Man. But that’s another story for another awards show in another year.

The 2024 Script Supervising Awards: Episode 2:
The People’s Choice Awards!

Decided to try adding a new one this year, not sure I’ll do it again, but let's have some fun with it.

The People’s Choice Awards, are, as the name suggests, the only televised awards show not voted on by snooty out-of-touch industry insiders like me, but rather, as they say, “the people.”

For the first time, we decided to not do a post of all the nominees. Winners only.

Congratulations to the Choiciest Script Supervisor of the year, Steve Gehrke, for his work on Oppenheimer and Barbie.

And here are the 34 script supervisors chosen by the People!

Another Script Supervising Awards announcement.

We're going to add the People's Choice Awards this year. Not the nominees, just the winners. I pared them down a few years ago because it was the same nominees in almost every awards show. So I got it down to four: Emmys for TV, Oscars for movies, Spirits for low budget movies and Razzies for bad movies. Most of the Peoples Choice Awards go to stuff that isn't nominated for anything else, because film snobs like me tend to not like the massively popular fare, and those films are just as hard to script supervise as the "important" movies. The PCAs are tonight. Will probably post winners next week.

The 2023 Script Supervising Awards, Season Finale: Emmy Winners!

January 15, 2024: In a ceremony held at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, 37 scripted television productions were awarded Emmys for outstanding achievements in various crafts. And they couldn’t have done it without the 82 script supervisors we honor with this announcement.

With more and more shows hiring more than one of us, it was almost impossible to fit them all onto one poster. Comments will include the same document broken up into 4 pages for easier reading.

These awards were for shows that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. It was supposed to be held 4 months earlier in September but was delayed due to the strikes.

Congrats to Rachel Connors, Tori Scott and Shaida Kazemi, for two Emmy-winning projects each. Only Murders in the Building & The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Rachel, The Bear & Poker Face for Tori, and Ted Lasso & Ms. Marvel for Shaida.

One unexpected surprise. It is extremely rare for a documentary to hire a script supervisor, however, this year’s winner for Best Documentary, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” did use one of us. Congrats to Corey Jones for this rare honor.

Over the next four weeks, be on the lookout for our posts for the 2024 season: the Independent Spirit Awards, the Razzies and the Oscars.

The 2023 Script Supervising Awards: Emmy Nominees Edition

It’s time once again for The Script Supervising Awards!

We got a bit behind and didn’t wrap up the 2022 Season until 22 days ago, but now we’re ready to kick off new year of nonsense.

Over the next 45 days we’ll make 8 posts, covering the nominees and then the winners of four awards shows, ending with the Academy Awards on March 10.

Once again, before we begin, our Mission Statement:

“After the Oscars, Globes and Emmy Awards are handed out on TV, and countless other guilds, unions and associations do their televised and non-televised ceremonies, there still remain hundreds of crew members working in jobs that receive no recognition during awards season, other than a generic "thanks to the crew" some winners are decent enough to shout out. This is for the Script Supervisors who helped guide award-winning (and nominated) films & TV shows from the set to the editing room to the screen.”

The Emmy Awards honor the best in television, and being television, there are a lot of categories. So many that they can't fit them all into one night, hence the untelevised awards being handed out 2 weeks before the big show. Lots of categories means lots of shows, which means lots of script supervisors. This isn't the Oscars with their wimpy 23 awards. The Emmys have 117.

BY THE NUMBERS: With this announcement, we honor the 196 script supervisors who worked on 206 shows that received 591 total nominations for 117 Emmys.

No, the math doesn't add up because 104 nominated shows did not use a script supervisor. (Documentaries, reality, sports, news, etc.)

A note regarding criteria and inclusion: We here at the Script Supervising Awards make no distinction whether you were the full-time script supervisor, 2nd unit, or just filled in for a day. If you set foot on the set of one of the nominated shows, you’re on the list.

If you worked on one of the nominees and are not on the list, it’s because you didn’t update your IMDB profile. If this is you, send me a note and I’ll correct your profile and add you to the list. But please, everyone, learn to keep your IMDB up to date. I do make an effort to watch the credits of nominees with incomplete data online, but it would save us a lot of time if we didn’t have to do that.

This year’s Emmiest Script Supervisor, with FOUR nominated shows for a total of 11 nominations, was Barbara Abelar, who worked on Perry Mason, Abbott Elementary, S.W.A.T. and American Horror Stories.

And now we honor the script supervisors with a new Emmy-nominated program on their resume this year:

The 2023 Script Supervising Awards: The Academy Award Winners!

With this post we are caught up on the 2023 awards season. But we’re not taking a break, the hits will keep on coming as we’re already behind on the 2024 season.

In a ceremony held March 12, 2023, 13 movies won 23 Oscars, with the help of 21 Script Supervisors. We made a change this year and will no longer mention documentaries or animated film if they didn’t hire a script supervisor, as it’s extremely rare when they do.

So let’s wrap up 2023 late as hell but looking ahead.

The 2023 Script Supervising Awards: Oscar Nominees Edition!

Welcome to the Super Bowl of the film industry! But before we learn who the Oscar winning script supervisors are, we honor the nominees tonight.

Again, these are last year’s Oscars. We’re plowing through a backlog this week.

We have almost completely reversed the recent trend of scripted films not having a script supervisor. Besides the usual non-supervised animation and documentary films, we only have 1 scripted short this year that didn’t use one of us.

That being said, here are the 63 script supervisors of the 54 movies that competed for 20 Oscars at the 2023 Academy Awards ten months ago.

Aaron Sauerland (Marcel The Shell With Shoes On)
Akshata Gaigaware (RRR (Rise Roar Revolt))
Alexandra Torterotot (The Whale)
Alicia Accardo (Babylon)
Anna Humphries (Everything Everywhere All At Once) (additional)
Åshild Samseth (Night Ride (Nattrikken))

Björn S. Berger (Tár) (additional)
Bry Sundström (Top Gun: Maverick)
Claudia Nannuzzi (Tell It Like A Woman) (segment: “Unspoken”)

The 2023 Script Supervising Awards: The Razzie Winners!

Last year's Worst awards. Fifteen script supervisors walked away from these projects bloodied and bruised, where nobody listened to a thing they had to say. We salute their hard unappreciated work.

The 2022 Script Supervising Awards: The Razzie Nominee Episode!

Reminding us to not take this job and business too seriously, the Razzies have once again "honored" the worst movies and performances of the year. (Last year, remember, we're still getting caught up after taking a year off)

I have mixed feelings about the Razzies. Sometimes they're hilarious with who they nominate, other times they can be cruel and immature, and are often accused of merely "piling on" to a critical flop without actually watching it. And if anyone is upset for being included, just enjoy the notoriety. You're not really in show business until you've worked on a disaster.

One more note. This year the Razzies landed in hot water for nominating a child for Worst Actress. Accused of bullying, at first they defending the decision, then eventually agreed it was a mistake. As a result, the category was rescinded, but still appeared on the ballot with the option of voting for “The Razzies” as Worst Actress, and they won overwhelmingly. I will include the nominees here but there will be no Worst Actress winner on the upcoming winners announcement.
