My dog is hilarious. His name is Leo. Every morning he waits at the foot of my bed and whines. He is very capable of jumping up onto it himself, but he wants someone to get out of the bed, and both invite him and lift him up. Once there, he makes himself at home, snuggling right in.
THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY!
I was thinking about it this morning, as he whimpered asking for permission and help getting onto the bed. It’s not just a dog thing.
It’s a human thing too. I know my brain looks for:
“Who is in charge?”
“Who do I need to get permission from?”
“Will I get in trouble?
Likely your brain has offered that a time or two as well.
I was filming at a conference with a client a couple of weeks ago. All the women there were Doctors, years of education and expertise behind them. They had the same theme coming up too. They did an exercise that was empowering. When Elizabeth Gilbert was presenting to them she had them write on a piece of paper.
“From the office of the Principal, __________ is hereby given permission to _______________________.”
What if you gave yourself permission?
Permission to be seen, to be heard?
To tell better stories?
What could change?
Do this little activity for yourself.
Give yourself permission.
Don’t wait for someone else to grant it.

The amount of studying I do compared to when I was in school…
Let’s just say jr high me probably wouldn’t believe how much I love learning.
These are the books that are currently on- near or under my nightstand.
That doesn’t count the books, podcasts, and shows I consume. My wife likes to point out that we are big nerds🤓.
Guess what 13 year old me… I do like to study (I wasn’t always like this).
The thing I think I study the most? My own thoughts. That’s what the blank iPad represents. Almost every day I write down things my brain offers me- and examine them.
Some times it’s amazing. Sometimes it’s garbage. Often it’s not conscious.
I like to be more aware every day. That starts with being a conscious consumer- especially when it comes to my own thoughts.
