Aksyon Sa Altapresyon: Distribution of BP Monitoring Booklets
In caring for our hypertensive residents in Barangay Balanan, we have always made sure to provide them with the information they need to be able to act against this non-communicable disease. We started out by giving a series of lectures and house-to-house case finding then referred them to our Regional Health Unit. Once they were diagnosed by our Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Wilson Lumapas, they were enrolled into the Hypertension Club. Being part of the Hypertension Club meant they now have access to free anti-hypertensive medications like metoprolol, losartan, and amlodipine. We noted that after diagnosis and giving proper attention to their blood pressure and medication compliance, most of our hypertensives have been maintaining their BP goals. It also helped that our Public Health Nurse, Ms. Che Tamsi, travels to Balanan in her tricycle to be able to monitor our hypertensive patients.
This only proves that hypertension control should be a multisystem approach and in hard to reach areas like ours, we had to dedicate extra attention to our hypertensives in informing them and monitoring their disease. Having vital information made them more likely to seek care and be compliant to their medications. Thus we integrated all these in our BP monitoring booklet which included the content of our series of lectures on hypertension, a medication tracker, and BP monitoring sheet. We set a one-on-one session to teach them the contents and how to use it. We also computed their body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio in preparation for their next program on lifestyle modification. We hope that even without our presence in the community, this type of medical record will also make it easier for other health professionals to understand the course of their disease should our hypertensives pursue care in other institutions.

BLS and First Aid Training with MDRRMO-Mahayag
We are grateful for our local Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Team for conducting a free BLS and First Aid Training for all 27 key leaders of Barangay Balanan including our barangay council, purok leaders, and health workers. The training included lectures and return demos on basic bandaging, splinting, first aid management, and most importantly, cardiopulmonary resuscitation. With the limited resources, they managed to conduct the training without a mannequin by improvising wth 20-liter gallons.
In emergency situations, every second counts and in a barangay like ours where the roads are rough and the nearest hospital is 20 minutes away, we hope these skills can help save more lives in our community.
