“Venuta la sera giunse un uomo ricco di Arimatèa, chiamato Giuseppe, il quale era diventato anche lui discepolo di Gesù. Egli andò da Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù. Allora Pilato ordinò che gli fosse consegnato. Giuseppe, preso il corpo di Gesù, lo avvolse in un candido lenzuolo e lo depose nella sua tomba nuova, che si era fatta scavare nella roccia; rotolata poi una gran pietra sulla porta del sepolcro, se ne andò. Erano lì, davanti al sepolcro, Maria di Màgdala e l'altra Maria”. (Vangelo di Matteo 27, 57-61).

Questo straordinario foglio di Raffaello è uno dei sedici disegni preparatori che l’Urbinate eseguì tra il 1506 e il 1507 per la realizzazione della pala destinata alla ca****la Baglioni in San Francesco al Prato a Perugia e oggi conservata alla Galleria Borghese a Roma.

Il disegno, custodito al Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi, è molto probabilmente l'ultimo in ordine temporale in virtù del suo alto grado di finitezza e delle strette corrispondenze con la versione finale del dipinto.

Il foglio, già quadrettato e pronto per essere riportato sul cartone a grandezza naturale, esclude il gruppo con la Vergine e le due Marie. Inoltre i più rilevanti cambiamenti rispetto al dipinto riguardano l'eliminazione della donna alle spalle della Maddalena, nella versione finale spostata nel gruppo di figure che circondano la Vergine, e il conferimento di nuove caratteristiche morfologiche al portatore all'estrema destra, identificato con Nicodemo.

La scena raffigura il momento in cui il corpo di Gesù, deposto dalla croce, viene trasportato verso il sepolcro.
I due uomini che portano il corpo di Cristo si stanno dirigendo a sinistra verso la grotta, salendo dei gradini. Essi si servano unicamente di un pezzetto di lino per trasportare Gesù e hanno la schiena inarcata a causa dello sforzo.

Attorno al corpo di Gesù si stringono alcune persone, tra cui un efebico San Giovanni a sinistra, una donna dietro la Maddalena con la mano vicina alla bocca e Maria Maddalena affranta che prende la mano dell’amato Messia. Qui possiamo notare il contrasto tra la mano “viva” di Maria Maddalena e quella “morta” di Cristo.

I dettagli anatomici sono resi con molta cura e ciò è dovuto alla conoscenza dell’opera di Fra Bartolomeo e in parte allo studio attento dei modelli scultorei di Michelangelo da parte di Raffaello.

Il grande artista urbinate decise di rappresentare un momento preciso e intermedio, molto difficile da raffigurare per narrare questo doloroso episodio della Passione di Cristo e l’eccezionale disegno preparatorio dimostra quanto Raffaello fosse davvero un genio.
