NORTON, Pierce Fitzgerald (BPD) Of South Boston, passed away suddenly on January 11, 2024. Loving son of Lawrence and Maureen (Fitzgerald) Norton of South Boston. Beloved husband of Brittani Smith. Devoted father of Pierce Salvatore Norton. Cherished brother of Lauren Wilson and her husband Michael of Braintree, Brian T. Norton of Boston, and Catherine Beaty and her husband Benjamin of Wellesley. Loving uncle of Charlotte and Jack Beaty. Pierce is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whom he loved dearly. Mr. and Mrs. (Nina) Richard Hayes of South Boston, Gerard. V. Fitzgerald of Falmouth, Mr. and Mrs. (Jano) Kenneth O’Brien of Milton, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph (Jody) Fitzgerald of South Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Fitzgerald of South Boston, and Mr. and Mrs. (Mary) Romualdas Zukauskas of Weymouth. Visiting in St. Brigid Church, 841 East Broadway, South Boston, on Tuesday, January 16th, from 4-7pm. Funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday in St. Brigid Church at 10am.

Pierce was a graduate of Providence College, class of 2009. An outpouring of neighborhood love + support after robbery of a local shop, Love Child! As a small business owner, during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you expect last-minute shoppers, gift card purchases, returns, suggestions, and wrapping of items, but you don’t expect to get robbed. Love Child, a gift, bottle, and bloom shop located on West Broadway, was robbed on Friday. Although the suspects only got away with bottles of booze, it was still traumatizing for the staff working.

The Boston Police were called, and a report was filed. But the story does not end there. Colleen, one of the owners of Love Child, and her husband Andrew were at Capo grabbing dinner and drink at the bar and met life-long Southie resident Mark Rooney (of the legendary Rooney Family with 11 boys) and began to chat. While they were talking, Colleen received the call that Love Child had been robbed. Needless to say, it was quite upsetting. So much so, Rooney made a post on social media! South Boston Bars We Said Goodbye To

A few years ago, we came across a Twitter thread, “Boston Bars that No Longer Exit.” This inspired us to start our own “South Boston Bars That Don’t Exist Any More” thread, and boy, oh boy….. It was a trip down memory lane. Every place from Huck’s Hideaway to the Molly Darcy’s got a mention. People recalled stories of bellying up to the bar at their favorite haunt to the fact at the bar, Street Lights was fondly referred to as Street Fights. Interesting fact: Did you know that Street Lights had a “Pearl Harbor Night” where you could drink Pearl Harbor’s for $1. What could possibly go wrong?

From this Twitter thread, a friend of CIS Sheila Lynch emailed us photos of the “Great Southie Reunion” program from 2000. (And that was quite an event! A veritable who’s who of Southie legends like Sully, Obie, Wolfie, Lefty, Spuckie, and Clinky – to name a few.) So below, feast your eyes on this list of legendary bars and taverns from the 20th century that existed (or still exist) in South Boston that was included in the program. Light it Up Seaport! Holiday Stroll and Tree Lighting! Get ready to get your holly jolly on.

Boston’s tallest holiday tree (49ft.), adorned with 10,000 twinkling lights, will be lit. The sixth annual tree lighting program will be hosted by local Holiday Cheermeisters Amina Smith and Ashlee Feldman, and include performances by Boston Children’s Chorus, Lisa Bello, Notebook P, Danny Rivera, Amandi Music, Vincent King, Eph See, and The Q-Tip Bandits. The evening will also feature a Holiday Stroll throughout the neighborhood, where 60+ Seaport retailers will be offering exclusive one-night-only promotions. Participating stores include injeanius, Little Words Project, Fjallraven, Helly Hansen, and Outdoor Voices. Guests can also enjoy complimentary bites and sips, aerialist performers and a special appearance by Seaport’s star celebrity, Betty the Yeti. It’s the second annual ship lighting! A special children’s celebration will be held on Saturday, November 26, at 4 p.m. at the Smith Family Waterfront in the Seaport District and Fort Point neighborhood when the Friends of Martin’s Park and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department host the second annual holiday lighting of the ship in Martin’s Park.

Located at 64 Sleeper Street on the South Boston Waterfront and visible from the Northern Avenue Bridge, Martin’s Park at the Smith Family Waterfront is a climate-resilient park built in memory of eight-year-old Martin W. Richard, the youngest victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The accessible park provides play opportunities for children, families, and visitors of all abilities. The wooden play ship is the centerpiece of the space that will be lit for the holidays.

Martin’s Park will be transformed into a beautiful holiday display when the ship, surrounding beach fencing, and pedestrian bridge are illuminated with over 1,500 feet of blue and white tube lights. WS Development is a key sponsor supporting this year’s event as well as the holiday lights on Martin’s Ship. Visitors are encouraged to head inside the park for the celebration sponsored by the Friends of Martin’s Park and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

Santa will arrive by boat with the Boston Police Harbor Unit at the Harborwalk and enter the Park to switch on the lights. Entertainment will be provided by the Acappella group Ball In The House performing a selection of holiday classics, along with a special guest, the Seaport’s own Betty the Yeti. Hot cocoa will be provided by Tuscan Kitchen, Caffe Nero and Dunkin’., and with a donation, attendees will have the opportunity to take home a customized special souvenir of the second annual event while supplies last! 📸gorgeous photo captured by 🎄
