Finally finally finally Felix Hess's Frog recordings are being re-released. The cassettes with recordings were legendary. Last year Dead Mind Records asked me to restore the recordings and master. This is just a selection. The whole of the recordings is still under wraps.

April will be spent working on audio-postproduction and mastering of this film. I've worked for Mark Lyken since 2015. His early movies and installations are slow-cinema investigations into the psyche of the Scottish landscape. Later works are more social observations. A looking glass into the lives of ordinary people. But as always, the longer you look at the ordinary the more interesting details come to the foreground. This is the fifth production I'm involved in and since I like working in a video context decided to add the category 'audio for video' to my website.

Through the years I have mastered the audio of several video projects. Most of them directed by Scottish artist Mark Lyken > www.marklyken.com. Aside from that I have released various small videos myself that can be viewed through my youtube channel.

Ernest Berk was born in 1909 in Cologne, Germany. As a youth, he studied music and wrote and acted in his own plays. While a student at the influential Mary Wigman dance school in Cologne, he began to produce his own ballets, and in 1933 he formed his own company and married fellow student Lotte Heymansohn. As the 1930s progressed, conditions in Germany became increasingly dangerous and untenable for the young couple and they left the country in 1935. With Berk’s British passport they made their way to London, and eventually settled in Shepherd’s Bush.
Shortly before he died in 1993, he reflected on his remarkable but little known parallel life as a pioneering composer of electronic music: »[i]t amazes me how many compositions I made over the years, and the great variety of emotion they covered and the richness of sound-colour they showed,« he wrote in a letter to a friend. »It took me a time distance of nine-ten years before I could appreciate (or hate) my own music, and to understand the actual mass of work with which I am now confronted.«

I have embarked on a project of restoration of his works, together with Richard Scott. A restored and remastered survey of his music is to be released next year.
