Some facts about the legendary “Order My Steps”, which will be performed tonight by the original GMWA “Women of Worship” choir (Birmingham Chapter) at “Glory To Glory”, as we honor the song as a beacon of innovation and experimentation is gospel music

-Composed by Glenn Edward in 1991, in Houston Texas, Burleigh set out to combine the genre of Western classical music with the African American idioms of blues, jazz, and gospel music.

-“Order My Steps” has become one of the most recognized gospel songs from the late twentieth century, and stayed on Billboard Magazine’s Gospel Music chart for ninety-four consecutive weeks.

- In 1993, the convention convened in Indianapolis, Indiana. Burleigh presented the song to the National Mass Choir at GMWA for consideration to be recorded, but it was not accepted. He then shared the song with the women’s division, which accepted the song. The Women of Worship recorded the song that year at the convention.

-“Order My Steps” was subsequently named Song of the Year in 1994 at the Texas Gospel Music Awards.

Come to honor the song tonight with us at “Glory To Glory”

Eldorado Ballroom welcomes multi-instrumentalist, instrument designer, and educator Cooper-Moore.

Since the completion of his first handcrafted vessel, a unique 11-note xylophone made from discarded wood he calls an “ashimba,” he’s deepened the creative process of “music making,” and amassed a personal collection of self-made instruments that landed exhibitions at the Thread Waxing Gallery (NYC), and The Goddard Riverside Community Center (NYC) among others.

Experience the otherworldly works of Cooper-Moore alongside Bilal, Michael Wimberly, and William Parker live during “Contrapuntal Counterpoints” on Oct. 12th. For tickets, visit LAPhil.com

Join us for “On Dissonance” to experience four-time Grammy winner Patrice Rushen’s dynamic symphonic piece, “Sinfonia” played by a full orchestra.

Known for her influential R&B hits and role as Ambassador of Artistry In Education at Berklee College of Music, Rushen describes her classical compositions as “sonic landscapes with peaks and valleys.”

She further shares:

“In 1999 I composed my first symphony, ‘SINFONIA’. I just wanted to experiment with using every part of the orchestra. Up to that point, most of the ensembles I’d written for were smaller. I enjoyed that challenge and learned a lot, but I never thought I’d have the chance to work with a large orchestra… but it was my goal then.

Since that time, I have had the blessing of being commissioned to write a few pieces, showcasing my compositions in the context of the Symphonic stage!!!”

Eldorado Ballroom’s “On Dissonance” program highlights the works of Black Women in Classical, Symphonic, and Orchestral music while celebrating their groundbreaking contributions.
The program will feature orchestral pieces composed by Julia Perry (1924-1979), Patrice Rushen, and music for Tuba composed by Solange Knowles.
Conducted by Jerri Lynne Johnson, founder and Artistic Director of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra in Philadelphia, the evening will also showcase soprano Zoie Reams.

The program, titled “On Dissonance,” references Perry’s composition Homunculus C.F., created in 1960 in Akron, Ohio. This piece, composed in her father’s medical office, represents an early exploration of minimalism. Saint Heron’s mission to preserve the legacies of Black women creators is reflected in this performance, which aims to bring attention to these significant yet often overlooked works.

Join us for “On Dissonance” happening October 10th at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

“Monuments Are Here” premieres on SaintHeron.com today at 5PM Eastern Time.

“Monuments Are Here” explores the spirit of black domesticity and the object constellations belonging to Grammy Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Gene “Shady The Great” Thomas. Primarily recognized as a vocalist, producer, and member of the legendary funk band Parliament and Funkadelic, Thomas has expanded his passions into the physical composition of personally collected objects.

The artist has quilted a tapestry of futurism, imagination, and a relentless understanding of timelessness with each personally meaningful addition to his collection. Amassed over many years of hunting at flea markets, through his travels as a working musician, and from gifts by his beloved children, his objects transcend mere possessions. They live in harmony with him as cherished treasures, cradled in the reverence of his home, and boundlessly connect time and space.

Saint Heron’s “Monuments Are Here,” a night of film at The Guggenheim’s Peter B. Lewis Theater exploring Object Constellations, Black domesticity, and the spiritual art of collecting, featuring the world premiere of “Monuments Are Here” starring Gene “Shady The Great” Thomas.

Programmed by Nuotama Bodomo and Solange Knowles, the two artists reflected on the histories of journeys into home, intimate space, the objects that occupy them, and the worlds contained within their energies.
Even when small in stature, the objects are monumental story keepers and moment guardians holding universes within their form.
