📕From my shelf to yours: science-fiction📙

Science-fiction is a simply weird genre that has captured readers’ imaginations since pulp magazines became mainstream in the 1890s: containing only fiction and worth about a penny, allowing writers ultimate creativity. Despite originating over 100 years ago, literary scholars have struggled to come up with any certain criteria that makes up science-fiction, leading to a genre that is just as vast as it is strange.

Here are some of my favorite science-fiction reads to add to your collection:

Kazuo Ishiguro is a contemporary author that has recently caught readers’ attention. Writing mostly science-fiction, one of his most popular works continues to be “Klara and the Sun.”

“Kindred” by Octavia Butler creatively uses time travel to tell the story of slavery in the antebellum south.

Avid readers might know Margaret Atwood for her award-winning novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it is not her only science-fiction marvel. “Oryx and Crake” follows Snowman, a human with a defeatist attitude living a post-apocalyptic world where he might be the last of his kind.

The science-fiction genre provides for a wide scope of possibilities ranging from the rise of artificial intelligence to the downfall of the human species. If you’re in search of something unique to begin reading in 2025, one of these pieces of strange fiction might have what you’re looking for.

‼️Federal Funding Frozen⁉️

In a surprising move, President Trump announced an executive order to freeze federal funding effective January 28th. This decision has left many wondering about the implications and potential impact on various sectors, as well as worrying about how this could affect them personally.

As students, this executive order could have affected our financial aid. The Financial Aid Office sent out an email regarding this, saying that they initially were unsure how to proceed.
This decision created panic on campus as well, with a junior at RIC Lily, stating that “it was very surreal to get an email like that. You see a lot of “dooming” on social media, but when it directly impacts your life, the realization of how bleak things look for myself, for my friends and my family, it is chilling. I know if financial aid were to be taken away, me and a lot of other people would not have the privilege of an education. It feels like we’re going backwards.”

‼️Child protection in America‼️
The recent inauguration of President Donald J. Trump has fear rising across America. In New England, all blue states, anxiety is prominent as this nation’s empathy appears to be inconspicuous.

President Trump and his administration have given their own green card to permit United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers to enter schools, searching for illegal children to deport them. The Trump administration has focused on immigration enforcement, while measures to ban military-style assault rifles and other guns still remain debated.

Sensitive areas such as churches, schools, after-school programs, playgrounds and daycare centers were previously protected in the recent past, but under the Trump administration, that protection has now been overturned.

This raises important questions and concerns for migrant students in America.

The First Few Days of Trump

Donald Trump’s first few days as the 47th President of the United States were marked by a swift return to the aggressive, nationalist policies that characterized his first term.

Within hours of taking office, President Trump signed a series of executive orders aimed at reversing key policies from the Biden administration, particularly in areas such as immigration, energy, and trade.

Internationally, Trump reaffirmed his “America First” foreign policy, withdrawing the U.S. from several international agreements, including the Paris Climate Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, UNESCO, the Iran nuclear deal, and the UN Human Rights Council, and reasserting his stance on renegotiating trade deals.

Domestically, his administration quickly began to focus on economic growth through tax cuts and deregulation. Trump’s messaging emphasized a return to American greatness, framing his policies as essential to restoring the nation’s dominance in global markets.

Nearly every American is affected in some way because of these executive orders, and not in beneficial ways. Many Americans have been forced to take paid leave and are now under scrutiny simply for being themselves.

‼️Rhode Island’s historical shift to the right‼️

Rhode Island is one of the safest blue states in the country. Yet, in the 2024 presidential election, it mirrored the nation’s historic shift to the right. Kamala Harris won Rhode Island by just 13.6 points, which is an unusual margin for a safe blue state. Rhode Island has not voted for a Republican president since the landslide GOP victory in 1984.

Rhode Island saw a local shift to the right with multiple Republican victories seen throughout the state. Donald Trump also made gains in all 39 of Rhode Island’s cities and towns since 2020, sounding the alarm bells for the DNC. This shift within one of the bluest states in the country reflects the broader trend we’re seeing nationwide.

One of the initial reactions on the RIC campus was a Letter to Immigrant Students, signed by 60+ faculty members, emphasizing their support for students with precarious legal status.

🏳️‍⚧️Unity Center focuses on trans rights with “Empowered To Advocate”🏳️‍⚧️

A small yet diverse crowd gathered in the Unity Center beneath Donovan Dining Hall on Oct. 24 to attend a community meeting on a hot topic given the upcoming election: bodily autonomy. Those in attendance were of a wide range of ages, identities and cultures, proving that the issue is one that affects a great volume of people.

“You should be able to do whatever you want to yourself safely & without judgment,” stated Jocelyn Foye during the one-hour presentation. Foye is the executive director of The Womxn Project, a nonprofit organization centered around accessible healthcare, bodily autonomy and legislative advocacy.

The organization’s website specifies that the term “womxn” is inclusive not just to cisgender women, but to “trans people, non-binary and gender-fluid people.” As such, the term “bodily autonomy” applies not just to people’s right to contraception or abortion, but also to express whatever gender identity one aligns with. Violations of bodily autonomy in regards to trans people frequently include legislation on what one is (and more often, what one is not) allowed to do to their body in order to express their gender identity.

The day following the meeting, a member of The Anchor sat to speak with Danii De La Rosa, the Assistant Director for the Unity Center at Rhode Island College. “It was really a conversation between our director and the executive director of The Womxn Project,” said Rosa when asked about the Unity Center’s choice to host an event in the Empowered to Advocate series. The Unity Center’s web page describes it as a place that promotes equality and offers a space to touch on difficult topics of oppression. “This space provided a space for all of this to happen, ... for folks to get involved.”

❤️RI partnership for mental health💛

Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner AngÊlica Infante-Green have announced a new partnership with Hazel Health to bolster mental health support for students. This initiative aims to provide expanded mental health services in Rhode Island schools, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of mental well-being in education.

Hazel Health, known for its innovative telehealth solutions, will offer virtual mental health services directly to students. This partnership comes at a crucial time, as many young people face increasing challenges related to mental health, exacerbated by the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.
The program will be implemented in schools across the state, offering services such as virtual counseling sessions and mental health resources for students and their families. This approach addresses immediate needs and aims to foster a culture of mental wellness within the educational system.

📕Ryka Aoki, “Light from Uncommon Stars” author enters orbit at RIC📙

This year’s Open Books Open Minds (OBOM) book of choice, “Light from Uncommon Stars” features a woven tale of demons, aliens, donuts and music. Meet Ryka Aoki, the creative mind behind the novel as she reveals what inspired her story before her visit to RIC on Nov. 7.

Aoki’s goal in writing her novel is to break down the boundaries between marginalized groups. “It is easy to think of any marginalized group as static, as fixed in their otherness. This is an immigrant. That is a q***r. There is a paraplegic.” Alternatively, Aoki prompts relationships beyond allyship in the form of neighbors, friends and partners. “I’ve spent most of my life dreaming of other stars...other galaxies. However, as I grew older, I learned more about the science of it all—and realized that I might not live to see humans colonize another planet, or visit even the nearest stars. But there are entire universes to be discovered right next to us… Walking past you, at this moment, could be an ‘alien’ whom you might one day trust with the keys to your starship—or even your soul.”

Aoki prompts writers at RIC to write for their truest selves, for the best work comes from one’s own vulnerability. “Most of the mistakes I’ve made as a writer have come from writing the work that I ‘should’ be writing. And all of my happiest moments, my most satisfying moments, have come from when I wrote my own words, my own poems and stories and music–no matter how unmarketable or weird they might have seemed. And sometimes, your words will help readers discover theirs, as well.”

Aoki would like to thank RIC for choosing “Light from Uncommon Stars” as OBOM’s Common Book of 2024 and is excited to speak with RIC students this coming Thursday, Nov. 7 from 4:30–6:30 p.m. in Gaige Hall 100.

⚽️Jackson Fox scores lone goal as Anchormen down UMass Dartmouth, 1-0⚽️

In the return of four key playmakers for Rhode Island College, Jackson Fox was the guy to make the big play, with his goal in the 66th minute enough to down UMass Dartmouth in a 1-0 defensive standoff and improve their standing to 5-1 in the Little East.

The Anchormen hosted UMass Dartmouth for their 7 pm matchup Wednesday night, returning home after their 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine this past Saturday, sailing past the Huskies despite the absences of Tariq Adio, Jackson Fox and Sekou Kamara in the shorthanded victory. Sophomore defender Alijah Nunes was also out with injury but returned tonight along with the other three Anchormen mentioned.

The 2-7-3 Corsairs (0-3-2 LEC) looked to find some traction at Alumni Field after a 4-2 bludgeoning by Western Connecticut State at home on Oct. 12th.

‼️Blithe Spirit at Forman Theater‼️

The RIC Mainstage started off the spooky month of October with a production of “Blithe Spirit” by Noel Coward at the Helen Forman Theater. This two-act play was directed by Casey Seymour Kim and performed entirely by actors enrolled at Rhode Island College.

In the playbill for the show, Casey Seymour Kim states that the actors involved in the production “are new to this genre and have worked to master the rhythm, attitude, and dialect,” yet considering the poise and authenticity of each cast member, it’s hard to believe that this isn’t second nature for them. Every aspect of these delightfully different characters is executed wonderfully, from the fake accents to the blocking, with facial expressions and physical mannerisms that bring each character to life.

The production ran Oct. 2–6 and was a delight to sit through. The effort invested into it by the cast and crew culminates into a professional production that leaves the viewer completely invested. From a hysterical beginning to a standing ovation at the end, “Blithe Spirit” was full of wit, charm and humor and an enchanting start to the Mainstage Theatre season at Rhode Island College.

School shootings and anxiety

Rhode Island College students and faculty received a startling series of alerts sent to both their email inboxes and smartphones Tuesday Oct. 5 with the words “EMERGENCY: ACTIVE THREAT.” The first warning arrived at 11:18 a.m. to much confusion and alarm.

According to the Providence Police Department, an active threat is defined as “any deliberate actions that pose an immediate or imminent danger to others.” It’s no surprise that the immediate idea that came to mind across campus was a terrifying one. After all, with the most recent school shooting having occurred only a month prior in Winder, Georgia, students are wary. Given the increasing frequency of gun violence around the United States, as well as the growing death tolls caused by mass shootings, they have every right to be.

Although the warning was specifically for the Rhode Island Nursing and Education Center on Eddy Street, the initial message only included an abbreviation of “RI NEC” as well as instructions to avoid that specific area of campus. Some mistakenly believed that the warning referred to a building on the main campus. Though an “ALL CLEAR” message was received approximately half an hour later with an explanation email from the campus police shortly after, some were still left shaken.

This scare comes just over a week after campus police were called to Penfield Hall for a similar incident: a report of gunshots. Another email was sent to students addressed to those who live on campus with a brief explanation of the situation. According to this email, the “gunshots” reported by a student in an adjacent room were actually balloons popping.

‼️👻Organization spotlight : Inkwell‼️👻
In 1924 at a masquerade dinner party, two people died. They left the party as ghosts– one named Jebus and the other Jeapers. One day, Jebus found a letter from Jeapers, and the two became friends, writing back and forth to each other for a century.

That’s the lore behind Rhode Island College’s new organization: Inkwell. Inkwell is, on the surface, a pen-pal program. But there’s much more to it than that- two writers (called ghosts) are paired at the start of the semester. They don’t know the identity of their other ghost, but after a semester of writing back and forth, there will be a final event where they will be able to guess who they’ve been paired with.
Inkwell is an immersive experience, complete with code-names, a discrete pick-up and drop-off system and plenty of events to participate in.

one of the biggest events this semester will be the organization’s Murder Mystery Masquerade Ball, taking place Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Already they’ve had a few events, including ghost games on the quad and mask-making sessions so that those attending the ball will be able to get into ‘spirit’ and continue to keep their identity hidden. The masquerade ball is an adorable link to their lore– it’s where their mascots originated and the reason they met.

Even if you’re unable to attend the events, participating will ensure you at least one new ghost friend. It’s a great way to get involved and meet new people, especially if you’re more introverted.
👻To keep up with Inkwell and their ghostly friends, check out 👻

‼️Vote Yes on 5: RIC improvements on the ballot‼️

November is fast approaching. In addition to President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaigns, local elected officials are also campaigning for local ballot questions.
Question 5, up for vote on November 4, would allocate $160.5 million to Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island. If passed, $73 million will be allocated to RIC for the renovation of Whipple Hall and the improvement of our Institute for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies.

Whipple Hall was originally built in 1958 and originally served as RIC’s gymnasium. In 1987, Whipple underwent renovations to convert the building into labs, classrooms and faculty office space. The building itself has been awaiting construction for almost 20 years.

In 2010, the Master Plan facilities assessment rated Whipple as being in “poor condition” due to HVAC and structural deficiencies- has anyone else’s unofficial campus tour taken you by the “Whipple crack?” Though the HVAC deficiencies were taken care of, Whipple’s “face life” was left in limbo.

After the reconstruction, the Institute for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies will relocate from Alger Hall, as advancements with the Institute have caused them to outgrow their current space.

Also, the expansion of the Institute after relocation will allow for Cybersecurity majors to practice the things they learn in the classroom. Technological expansions will include simulation labs, more advanced computer labs, artificial intelligence labs and a security operations center.

If voters vote “Yes on 5,” RIC will be seen as a workforce leader. This investment will provide the state with many opportunities to improve local cybersecurity, collaborate with local businesses for their cybersecurity needs and can prove to be a strong ally with the federal government.

‼️Hasbro considers leaving Rhode Island‼️

Rhode Island governor Dan McKee and House Speaker Joe Shekarchi met last Thursday with Hasbro owner Chris C***s after news surfaced that the toy and entertainment giant is exploring options that include moving its headquarters out of Pawtucket.

Hasbro has been headquartered in Rhode Island for over a century and they generated over five billion dollars in revenue last year. About 1,400 people are employed at the headquarters with jobs varying from artists and writers to mechanical engineers. Internships in any of these positions are also available.

Roberta Thomson, a Hasbro spokesperson explained that as “Hasbro continues to evolve, we’re exploring options for our global headquarters to make sure it is a space that can best serve our employees, partners, and business needs for years to come.” She added, “Regardless of the outcome and location, we remain committed to our history - not leaving it behind, but building on it.”

However , despite Hasbro’s claim that a move would be helpful and that they will acknowledge their history in Rhode Island, state officials are trying hard to keep Hasbro in the state. “The state should do everything it can to retain the jobs,” said Chamber President Laurie White. “It’s similar to the situation that arose in the spring, where Massachusetts is aggressively going after Rhode Island companies.”

Will Hasbro relocate to a bigger and better facility or will they preserve their history by staying in Rhode Island? Only time will tell.
