Let’s turn the tide for local journalism
The Outer Cape is home to a creative, engaged, complex community, beloved by those who live and work here as well as by many part time residents and visitors. At the same time, environmental, social, and economic forces increasingly threaten the future of this uniquely fragile and beautiful place.
We believe good journalism can help bring us together to understand those challenges better and create a sustainable future here.
The news, after all, is a community’s way of seeking the true stories of itself. It involves us in sharing our lives, our joys, our struggles, our ideas, our generations in a way that keeps us connected and able to find common purpose.
We are inspired by the movement to save local journalism growing across the country. We believe the Outer Cape should be a part of it.
That is why with community support we are bringing together a group of reporters, photographers, artists and other smart people, all working to create a newspaper that is truly local, not “Wicked Local.”
We are dedicated to building a homegrown news business, one that will enliven our democracy and create local jobs. One that is not designed to make anybody rich, but to make our lives richer.
Our purpose is truth-seeking reporting on our towns, community organizations, arts, science and the environment, health and healthcare, education, children, family life, fishing and farming, the local economy. It is also to reflect the sometimes eccentric culture of this place.
Our vision is to find stories that bring us closer to our neighbors and to this Outermost place. We are going to celebrate all that is good here, in a place that’s proud of its tradition of welcoming separatists and strangers. And delve into the challenges we face on the far end of this sandbar.
The Provincetown Independent is for those who want to reckon with real life on Outer Cape Cod, the place we love now and the one we are creating for the future.
Our reporting covers the four towns on this final stretch into the Atlantic—Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown—as well as the Cape Cod National Seashore.
As we launch, we are led by Edward Miller, editor and Teresa Parker, publisher. More about our backgrounds will be available in just another day or two at www.provincetownindependent.org
