I’m super grateful for all of the support on my recent video JOYRIDE. In honor of wrapping up the project, I wanted to share some behind the scenes photos captured by .matchu 📸
The concept for the video really started with the locations. When shooting a spec project, it’s very important to tailor the concept to what is actually feasible from a production standpoint. It’s fun to think of crazy ideas but unless you have the capabilities to pull it off, the film won’t get made. I knew that I wanted to show off the full capabilities of the car as well as Josh’s precision driving skills, but had to find a way to do it with a minimal budget, no street closures, and away from pedestrian traffic. Thankfully we were given access to which gave us the location and production design for our warehouse scene, and I spent a few days scouting out areas of downtown Los Angeles as well as tunnel and dry lakebed locations where we would have the lighting and access we needed to get our shots. One of the biggest challenges we ran into was during the desert shoot. With a few miles of off-road trail leading up to the lakebed, we had to tow Josh’s car from LA in order to have enough clearance to access. Another unanticipated challenge was that when you are driving at top speed on a dry lakebed, dirt gets EVERYWHERE. On bodies, equipment, and definitely in a car that doesn’t have doors.
Each project has its own takeaways that allow you to be better prepared and more efficient the next time around. I’m thankful to have been surrounded by such good friends so we could enjoy some laughs along the way.
