“Vern” is a 50-word story about the workplace injury sustained by my great grandfather, T. Vernon Smithson, at the cotton gin in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.

Identity Theory is an online magazine of literature and culture publishing interviews, prose, poetry, art, commentary, and other inventive explorations of humanity since 2000.

My great-grandfather Vern worked in the cotton gin and one day his arm got stuck.

Sharing My Story

My name is John and I’m a 40-year-old husband and father, small business owner, podcaster, and I have MS. I made this podcast to share what I’m going through.

I record a 15-minute episode, recounting what’s happened recently and how I felt or what I thought about it.

It is hard to be disabled sometimes, because you are like a square peg in a round hole. But sometimes it can lead to powerful realizations about what’s important in my harmonious and disharmonious life. My family and friends, my disability, my business, weaving the fabric of life together from these, weaving the finest cloth I’m able.

I run Hoppin Hot Sauce, selling sauce to restaurants and grocery stores. Before I had MS, I worked in the food industry, everything from a dishwasher to a chef and even on the other side as a vendor and business consultant. I love food and I share the taste of my table with others through Hoppin Hot Sauce.
