Trophy Eyes are back with an incredibly groovy new track called "Blue Eyed Boy".
To start off, I'm incredibly biased towards the band (they're the band my partner and I got engaged to). But I'll try and be as unbiased as I can. The guys have had a little while of silence over the last couple years, sprinkling some singles every once in a while. But this comes as the first taste of their upcoming album, hopefully aiming for release this year(?)
With a few line-up changes over the years, it's always hard to gauge what's going to happen and how that will influence new music from now, with vocalist John and bassist Jeremy being the only remaining original members left.
But this track absolutely brings back that iconic Trophy Eyes sound, singing/screaming vocals, a catchy chorus and stellar performance, this gives their sophomore release"Chemical Miracle" a run for its money, and that's a hard thing to say.
Speaking about topics that hopefully very few of us should ever deal with, having a best friend come back into your life and slowly falling away, back to bad habits. "Blue Eyed Boy's" lyrics hit you as you read along, possibly relating to a moment in time where you've experienced the same thing.
Really, my only criticism about this track is not hearing the chorus at least one more time, it's so easy to bop your head to and be instantly put in a good mood until the lyrics make you want to cry, it's over before I was even close to wanting the song to end. With pop punk elements mixed in with something similar to synth pop, this is a totally energetic and danceable track.
TE's 2018 album, "The American Dream" saw the band depart from their sound from "Chemical Miracle", and try new things which, for me, didn't land. I definitely enjoyed a song here and there but overall it really wasn't for me.
Since then, the singles they've put out, "Figure Eight", "27 Club", "Bittersweet", made me fall in love all over again with the band. These have been on repeat constantly.
I am VERY excited to hear what's in store for the guys, I'm ready to see them smash it, again and again.
