📖 Episode 42: Don't Tell Me What To Do 📖

One of the most publicized events of book banning in Kentucky happened in Graves County in 1986 when the school board banned "As I Lay Dying" by William Faulkner.

The board reversed its ban just one week later after intense media scrutiny and pressure from the ACLU.

Get this, the board hadn't even read it!

Episode 41: Between A Rock And A Hard Place

The state legislature designated Agate as our State Rock in 2000.

But it's not a rock...it's a mineral...making it a crystal.

The Kentucky Geological Survey was a bit salty about not being consulted before the designation was made.

Salty enough to mention it on their website!

Or should I say "Salt Rock" enough?

Pardon my pun. Haha!

Wanna know why lawmakers won't correct this designation?

Episode 41: Between A Rock And A Hard Place

The state legislature designated coal as our State Mineral in 1998 after being petitioned by students from Louisville.

Scientifically, coal is not a mineral. It's a rock. A rock that just also happens to be burnable.

It's the solid rock foundation of much of our economy.

Pardon my pun. Haha!

Wanna know why lawmakers won't correct this designation?

Episode 41: Between A Rock And A Hard Place

S.B. Pearce just learned that the state gemstone is the freshwater pearl...or is it? Join her as she discovers something really odd about a few of our state's strange official designations.

The Freshwater Pearl is Kentucky's state gemstone. The Kentucky General Assembly made the designation in 1986 after being petitioned by school children to do so.

The only.problem with this is that Pearl's aren't technically gemstones because they aren't made up of minerals. They are comprised of calcium carbonate and are one of the few gems that are organic, meaning they come from a living thing.

Because of their makeup, many Geologists consider them gems instead.

When we first arrived, we looked around the front of the area as we stretched our legs. We saw a man pop up near by. He was checking to see if we were visitors or if we were lost yard-salers.

That man was Keith Holt, the purveyor of Apple Valley Hillbilly Gardens and Toyland.

I love this picture of us! Check the photos for the captions!

Kurt Gohde is an art professor at Transylvania University. He discovered the phenomenon in a book was intrigued by the incident. He has spent years researching the subject and is now known as the Meatrain Expert. He has been featured in numerous major newspapers and magazines across the U.S. and he has participated in multiple interviews, including the Rachel Maddow show.

We met in his office on Transy's campus and he graciously shared his knowledge with me.

Historical Marker 1342.

Originally known as Mud Lick Springs, Olympian Springs was a resort and spa that many prominent Lexingtonians would escape to during the Cholera epidemic.

I wonder if there is a geologic explanation for the meat rain. They have natural springs so could there be other formations that could have caused the rain?

Episode 39: Kentucky Meat Rain

💥This episode is also on my YouTube channel!💥

We've all heard the phrase "It's raining cats and dogs" and the song "It's Raining Men"is an iconic dance classic. Water spouts can make it rain fish and there was once a blood rain in Tennessee. Have you ever heard of the time it rained meat in Kentucky? Join S.B. Pearce as she interviews Kurt Gohde, the Kentucky Meat Rain Expert. I don't think these folks were stepping on a poodle.

Hey friends!

Shimmy Mob will be in Morehead this Saturday!

We are honored to be dancing for DOVES of Gateway, a 24/7 emergency shelter that provides assistance to survivors of domestic abuse.

Shimmy Mob is a worldwide flash mob event that happens on the 2nd Saturday in May, World Belly Dance Day. Over 16,000 dancers from around the world perform the same dance, to the same song, wearing the same shirt to bring awareness to domestic violence. A portion of our registration fees goes to our team's chosen shelter.

Check out the flyer below!

100% of all donations collected goes directly to DOVES.

For more information about DOVES, visit dovesofgateway.org.

For more information about Shimmy Mob, visit shimmymob.com.

Now get yourself to Morehead this Saturday and come support us!
