Salome is a slow burning film that centers on the struggle of art critic and historian Jose Andres Galicia (played by Perry Dizon, an actor in Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Oscar winning film Drive My Car) who attempts to retrieve his memories at the height of the commemoration of the 500th year since Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in the Philippines. Traversing a multitude of themes –from colonization to the study of beauty, myth, religion to gender politics and contemporary life– the film is the director's rumination of the forces that impact our destiny as a people.

Salome will have its international premiere at the 19th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival which opens today. Catch Salome on December 3, 12:45pm at . RAM Botero, Tommy Alejandrino and Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon (Ruben Ostlund's Triangle of Sadness) joins Dizon in the cast.

"[Mangansakan] sidesteps the conventions of an industry too often preoccupied with technical polish, instead allowing the film’s deeper resonance to emerge. In a time when even independent cinema prioritizes aesthetic precision over substance, “Salome” charts a more subversive course. Its quiet, haunting layers speak to something beyond the personal struggles of its protagonist—it taps into a deeper historical wound, a lingering echo of colonial oppression. Through the spectral presence of Salome, a symbol of defiance against both local and foreign powers, the film challenges its characters—and its viewers—to engage with the past in a way that demands action, not just reflection."

"Salome" threads the past and the present, demanding to be seen beyond the limits of its form. Film Review: Salome (2024) by Gutierrez Mangansakan II

The trusted film reviewer Philbert Dy writes about Salome:

"The film fully plays its post-colonial hand, taking us into an illusion that breaks another illusion: imagery crafted to refute so much of what we've been taught, running counter to the images contrived by colonists seeking control. Here we have a legend, a myth, a person from fiction made real, or maybe someone real made into fiction. The film blurs those lines, pointing to real history while playing with stories, bringing light to real issues while spinning its tales...But if you can get on the film's wavelength, it tells a story that rages against the legacies of colonialism, and shows us a kind of faith that feels liberating."

Join us today for the Sinag Maynila gala of Salome, 6pm at Gateway Mall Cinema 17.

Fred Hawson on Salome:

"This talky, cerebral film may not be for everyone. There was hardly any action going on, and less-attuned viewers may quickly lose interest. However, I, for one, was caught up in its insightful conversations about art, history, and culture and its dwindling significance in the increasingly material world now."

BEHIND THE SCENES

Salome was shot in different locations in the Marilog District of Davao City, General Santos City and the municipality of Tupi, in South Cotabato. It was a skeleton crew, something manageable in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, with everyone functioning beyond their scope of work.

Watch Salome from September 4 to 10, 2024 which is competing at the Sinag Maynila Film Festival.

Salome is an offshoot of a much larger project entitled Faramanis –The Spellcaster of Tamontaca, in which I reimagined the characters of Elias and Salome in Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere as star crossed lovers in the Jesuit Mission at Tamontaca, in Cotabato, towards the end of the Spanish colonial period. In the original concept, her disappearance is subject to speculation which, to my writer's mind, became pregnant with possibilities. What if her disappearance is attributed some superstitious and magical qualities? What if a cult is formed from these beliefs? Fast forward 125 years later, thus, the film Salome.

Salome is a continuation of my musing on our colonial past, the power relations between colonizer and colonized, that continue to influence both the physical and psychic destiny of our people.

Watch it at the Sinag Maynila Film Festival from September 4 to 10, 2024 at Gateway Mall 2 Cinema and other cinemas in Metro Manila.
