FRONT 242

Legendary Belgian industrial act Front 242 have announced that they are to make their final live appearances throughout 2024.

The band, one of the pioneers of the EBM scene, had to postpone some shows in 2022 after founding member Jean-Luc De Meyer's hospitalisation with an undisclosed health issue.

In a statement on Facebook the band said:
“Today, we reach out to you, our fans, with a heavy yet hopeful heart to share the news of our final concerts. Now, we are preparing to bring down the curtain on our live performances as FRONT 242, we find ourselves navigating a sea of emotions.

For nearly four decades, we've journeyed together, creating unforgettable moments and sharing the profound joy of music. You've been more than an audience; you've been a part of our extended family, witnessing our evolution and sharing in our highs and lows.

The decision to step back from performing live has not been easy, but we believe it's important to end this chapter on a high note, preserving the essence of Front 242 that you've grown to love. We want to leave you with memories of our band at its peak, full of energy and passion.

So, we are extending our invitation to you: join us for one last adventure. Let's make these final shows a celebration of the incredible journey we've shared. We promise to deliver performances that capture the heart and soul of Front 242, a fitting farewell to a story we've written together.”

The band's final UK show will be at London Electric Ballroom on 8th December.

HRH GOTH
The troubled second installment of the Goth edition of the HRH franchise finally took place over the weekend, at the third time of asking.

HRH Goth 2 was originally meant to take place at Leeds O2 Academy in September 2022, before being rescheduled to September 2023 in Sheffield, Following the last minute cancellation of that event it finally took place at the Leicester 02 Academy over 16th & 17th February 2024 on a reduced basis. During that time, the vast majority of the line-up had withdrawn from the event, including headliners New Model Army and The 69 Eyes. Only recently, The Danse Society had announced they had cancelled their appearance.

The event finally ran with a line-up that included S*x Gang Children, Alien Vampires, FLEISCH, Gothzilla, Hurtsfall, PLAY/DEAD and Dhampyres amongst others.

The event, which has damaged the reputation of the promoters within the UK goth scene, is unlikely to return for a third installment after controversies regarding the relocation of the event, their no-refund policy, and the withdrawal of artists from the event.

TOMORROW'S GHOSTS FESTIVAL

Ghostwriter Consultancy & Events, current promoters of UK goth's flagship event at the Spa Pavilion in Whitby, have announced the lineup for their Halloween event.

Headliners are Peter Hook & The Light who make their second appearance at the event, and Creeper, who will be playing their first show on the goth circuit. IST IST, Skeletal Family, Black Doldrums, and The Gospel are also confirmed, with one more to be announced.

The event, which no longer runs an April edition, looks to be busier than ever as the Whitby goth weekends celebrate their 30th anniversary in October. The overcrowding in the town at the October 2023 drew adverse attention from national and local media alike.

NEW MODEL ARMY
Bradford-based post-punks New Model Army released their 16th studio album,on January 26th .

'Unbroken' featuers one of the band's trademark protest songs, with 'I Did Nothing Wrong' relating to the recent Post Office Horizon scandal. "It's quite extraordinary to many millions of us Brits that, years after the Post Office scandal became common knowledge, the deliberate delaying of any proper justice has continued. We actually wrote 'I Did Nothing Wrong' a couple of years ago, taking the scandal as its central storyline and then taking a broader swipe at the brutal, binary, digitized world that we are stupidly allowing to replace normal human interactions.", said band mainstay Justin Sullivan

The drummer, who replaced Pinch in 2020 after the latter left the band, was a member for the highly successful 'Darkadelic' album and world tour, which finished with a series of Halloween dates in the U.S. In a statement, Taylor said: "And that’s a wrap , That’s a wrap on the The Damned Darkadelic album cycle and a wrap on my time in drum seat for The Damned. LS WEEKLY
#109 2nd OCTOBER

HRH GOTH
Confusion reigned at the HRH Goth festival again this weekend, as it was postponed for the second time. The event, one of many festivals under the HRH franchise, first ran in September 2021 with simultaneous two-day events in Leeds and London and was originally intended to run again in Leeds in September 2022. This was however 'postponed' until September 2023, with the event being moved to the Sheffield o2 Academy – a decision that coincided with several artists (such as headliners New Model Army and The 69 Eyes, and Lord Of The Lost) leaving the line-up.

Since then, the event – scheduled to run concurrently with HRH Punk at the same venue – has been hit by further departures, with Ashbury Heights cancelling due to alleged non-payment of fees and Vlad In Tears cancelling due to visa issues. The last minute postponement of this year's event, coming the night before the event was due to start, has therefore surprised, bemused, and amused in equal measure.

The justification for the decision – that the venue needed to undertake safety checks due to RAAC concrete – has since been confirmed as accurate. However, with both their fluctuating line-ups and controversial business practices facing ongoing criticism, it remains an open question whether HRH Goth will go ahead in February 2024 at the third time of asking.

THE SISTERS OF MERCY

There were strange scenes at Camden Roundhouse this weekend, as Leeds' post-punk & goth legends The Sisters of Mercy began their UK tour with a two-night residency. Although they have not released any new material since 'Under The Gun' in 1993, the band – based around mercurial frontman and founding member Andrew Eldritch with a revolving cast of musicians – have continued to tour the UK and Europe on a regular basis, although their live performances have often divided opinion.

Reports coming out of their show on Friday 22nd were around complaints over the lack of volume of the band, and of Eldritch in particular, and of ongoing issues between the band and technical staff. This seemingly came to a head when guitarist Dylan Smith (who replaced Chris Catalyst in 2019) made an unscheduled departure from the stage before the end of the set. The surprise presence of Catalyst as the 'nurse' to the band's drum automation was also noted by fans. Rumours of Smith's departure from the weekend's shows were confirmed when he did not appear on stage with the band the following night, with the Sisters performing as a duo of Eldritch and Ben Christo.

Although no statement has been made, and the events will have little impact on the band's scheduled November shows, they will do nothing to counter questions around the Sisters' credibility as an ongoing live act.

Tour dates:
November 15: Bristol Marble Factory
November 16: Wolverhampton KK's Steel Mill
November 18: Newcastle NX
November 19: Nottingham Rock City
November 21: Manchester Academy
November 23: Glasgow Barrowlands

DEATH CULT
Post-punk legends Death Cult, the precursor to The Cult, have announced a series of reformation dates to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

However, with no word on the possible involvement of either bassist James Stewart or drummer Ray Mondo, the shows appear to be based around duo Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy alongside unspecified collaborators. Critics have noted that with that being the case, the shows are effectively merely The Cult playing Death Cult material.

The changeover of the word 'The' for 'Death' has certainly come with a considerable premium, with tickets on sale £60 or above. This has however not deterred fans, whose hunger to see a band called 'Death Cult' for the first time since 1983 has led to many shows having already sold out.

Tour dates:
November 6: Belfast Telegraph
November 7: Dublin Olympia
November 9: Sheffield Foundry
November 10: Liverpool Guild of Students
November 12: Glasgow Barrowlands
November 13: Nottingham Rock City
November 14: Birmingham O2 Institute
November 16: Bournemouth O2 Academy

This time stretching the definition of Goth even more than the tutorials naming convention and even further from even being in midwinter

A veritable eclectic smorgasbord of exciting talent with several acts rarely, if ever, seen in these more Northerly climbs alongside firm favorites. And none of it relying on dewy-eyed yesteryear memories - these are the acts of now, just as it was then the legends who made the scene were in their day.

Byronic S*x & Exile, Last July and Jan Doyle Band are the triumvirate of headline performances, each some of the most hardworking acts of the scene.

We introduce to you for the first time in the area Cannibal Fae of Walking Dream - a Gothic/folk/hybrid all the way from New York, Dead Blood Cells - incredible industrial with some chilling presentation, Palindrones - Goth electro dream pop trance from London and The Wattingers with unique steampunk slaughterhouse old west voodoo blues (or something)."

FESTIVAL FLUX FRENZY!

The UK goth festival circuit is once again in a state of flux after two recent bombshell announcements.

Tomorrow's Ghosts festival, the current event operating the flagship show at the Spa Pavilion in Whitby, have said in a statement that they will no longer be running an event in April and thereby are putting an end to the six-monthly traditional cycle of goth events at the venue. Other events taking place over goth festival weekend are proceeding as normal. Ghostwriter Consultancy, who promote the event, site escalating costs as the reason for the decision.

Meanwhile, Goth City Promotions have stated that this years Goth City Festival will be the last, due to the difficulties raising sufficient sums for charity in the current climate in the industry. The event has raised over £18,000 over 7 full festivals and 1 online event since 2016.

However, no sooner were these statements made were two new festivals announced – BlaqkhOlesun, due to take place in Morecambe over 7th & 8th June 2024, and Leo dis Requiem which is organised by former members of the Goth City Festival crew and isd die to take place in Leeds next summer.
