We’ve extended an invitation to , the creative director of , to explore the Europa Star archives. Here’s what she uncovered and her reflections on the experience :

« My knowledge of watches was previously limited to my father’s “About Time” collection for Omega in 1969 and Pulsar in 1976. Yet, over the last year, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with a group of men and women whose infectious passion for timepieces has broadened my horological horizons.

During my time working with my father, I was encouraged to look “outside the box” for inspiration and I discovered the work of Dieter Rams, the genius behind many of Braun’s most iconic designs. While Rams is known for his work in product design, his principles have encouraged me to approach my designs with a more minimalist mindset, allowing the gemstone to be the protagonist. These principles can be seen in clean, linear designs of watches from the 1970s which resonate with me for their simplicity and lack of unnecessary decorative fuss. Here, the uncluttered watch face takes centre stage.  I value a watch’s aesthetic appeal over its intricate mechanics - while some watch enthusiasts may consider it sacrilege, given the option, I would choose a simple digital watch over one with “grandes complications. »

MEN WHO GUIDE THE DESTINIES OF THE WORLD WEAR ROLEX WATCHES

A nostalgic throwback to the early 1960s reveals vintage advertisements promoting the Oyster Perpetual Collection. At that time, the world was predominantly governed by men. Featured in the first slide is Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States. Although he was assured this photograph would not be used for marketing purposes, Rolex’s decision to do so led to one of the most memorable and influential marketing campaigns in history.

KARI AND GEORGES THE WATCHMAKER AND THE ENGINE-TURNER
Exactly 20 years ago, Kari Voutilainen launched his eponymous brand. And 20 years ago too, Georges Brodbeck founded Brodbeck Guillochage. Thanks to their shared passion for the dying art of guillochage, these two men were destined to meet. Their paths have now converged and Kari Voutilainen has welcomed Georges, his machines and his encyclopedic knowledge into a new « Centre of Excellence in the Art of Guillochage ».
To celebrate this event, Voutilainen is releasing a tourbillon wristwatch directly inspired by the very first watch, a pocket tourbillon with a guilloché dial, from 30 years ago.

We’ve extended an invitation to to explore the Europa Star archives. Here’s what he uncovered and his reflections on the experience:

(1) Above is where it all starts for me. I literally grew up surrounded by pictures like this on the walls of my dad’s office in the center of Milan in the 1980s.
My last name Gohari means jeweler in Farsi (we are of Persian origin) and the gemstone business is a trade running in my family since the 1950s and a path I took at the age of 19 right after high school.
Fine Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds are part of my family history and seeing that ad literally evoked so many memories!

(2-3) These pages from the magazine truly evoke the essence of the watches I love to deal with:
Part style accessory, part work of art, a precious item and a time teller all at once.
The dress watch and the so called “form watch” (not the typical rounded case) are the cornerstone of my vision. Montres et bijoux is spot on as a slogan for me !

(4) The above ad combines my vision of metal work, shaped watches and more form than function to enjoy within the context of a timepiece and representing our individual style.

(5) When I saw this ad I was filled with memories of my arrival in New York over 24 years ago starting in the important precious gemstone business with my relatives. I personally know Jack Abraham and he is the “Ralph Lauren” of the gemstone business, something that really resonates with me as I am a big Ralph Lauren fan myself.
I love color and the watches I pursue today are typically colorful inspired by those old days!
I often compare my watches to gemstones as both don’t have a fixed price but instead a value set by beauty and emotion rather than retail lists… today the watches I deal with are the collectible gems of tomorrow.

(6-7-8) Color, color and more color… We need color in our lives: wether with gems and jewelry or stone dials on watches it represents our taste, mood and can brighten up any day.

(9) The article about the most important Kashmir sapphire sale at the time brings me back down memory lane.. today it would be 20 times the price. The price will be forgotten but beauty remains forever.

10 ICONIC JAPANESE WATCHES
Japan is probably the only country in the world where the most skilled craftsmen and women are officially called « living gods ». After more than a century in which the country’s homegrown mechanical watchmaking expertise has developed rapidly, with a focus on manufacturing excellence, and after revolutionising the international watch industry with its quartz movements - causing considerable upheaval in Switzerland - Japan is now going back to its roots. The country is asserting its artisanal and artistic excellence, proudly drawing inspiration from time-honoured aesthetic codes and creating a seductive weapon to wield in the international arena. These aesthetic signatures are repeated and reflected everywhere from decorative wrapping paper to watch dials, speaking the same symbolic language.

FRENCH WATCHMAKING
In France, as in Switzerland, the heart of the watchmaking industry lies along the Jura mountains, where many of the most long established companies are located. The region is now experiencing something of a renaissance after a challenging period of
deindustrialisation. At the same time, new players are emerging, many of them from Paris, with the skills to leverage the networks created by watch industry globalisation, and create worldwide demand for their
products. These are just some of the many facets we cover in this extensive report, undoubtedly one of the most ambitious
ever produced on French watchmaking !

We’ve extended an invitation to to explore the Europa Star archives. Here’s what he uncovered and his reflections on the experience:

« I’m highly influenced by the 60s/70s era; it was a tremendously creative time when people experimented with all sorts of cool designs. Watches from that period were very ‘free’ in their design, featuring organic shapes and lines that made them seem alive. I especially love the idea of a watch being a piece of jewelry, and nothing beats the feeling of having shiny gold or sparkling gemstones on your wrist. It adds a truly unique touch to a design, making it something truly special. What I love most in a watch is when you can see that a manufacturer has really taken the time to offer something special. Every curve, every detail, speaks to the meticulous work that has been put into a watch.
Having access to archives of this quality is essential for any enthusiast. It’s a direct testimony of an era, allowing us to immerse ourselves in designs and stories that have shaped watchmaking. To innovate or simply be consistent, one must know their past! »

Europa Star

Europa Star dates back to 1927 when Hugo Buchser, its founder, was a young and enthusiastic entrepreneur with a passion for watches. He launched a guide for watch buyers which soon became an essential tool for the entire watch industry. A seasoned traveller and globetrotter, he voyaged around the world, creating a network of magazines which would promote the watch industry worldwide. The first series of magazines was created in Brazil and Argentina, and by the 1950s a variety of magazines had sprouted up in English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Thai and Cyrillic, progressively covering most of the world’s continents.

Under the leadership of Gilbert Maillard-Buchser, who became President of Hugo Buchser SA in 1962, all the magazines were grouped under the Europa Star brand name to cover all the international watch markets, transforming Europa Star into a truly worldwide publishing company. Europa Star became the leader of the watch industry’s specialised press and the magazine’s worldwide expansion was extraordinary, making it a phenomenon in the Swiss watch industry press.

In 1995, the third generation of the family, brothers Philippe and Pierre Maillard, took over the helm of the company. In 2014, the fourth generation came on board with Serge Maillard, Publisher & CEO of Europa Star, bringing a youthful spirit and a fresh impetus with new developments in all products, in print and in the digital field. Today Europa Star reaches 170 countries through its portfolio of websites and newly redesigned magazine publications.
