What you might notice in comparison to Queen Street and indeed the whole Central Business District today is the number of people and the amount of parking and road space.
A common misconception about sustainability is that the term relates exclusively to environmental matters or ideologies. The practical reality is that without financial and economic prosperity, business and the wider economy becomes unsustainable.
What happens when councillors adhere to ideologies and agendas set by unelected global bureaucratic organisations instead of acting in the interests of the local businesses and residents is what we can observe today.
To meet obligations for membership to the C40 Cities group, Council bureaucrats are working to change the entire road layout of central Auckland to discourage residents from using private vehicles to get around in order to reduce traffic emissions. This severe restriction on freedom of movement is to meet Auckland Council's goal of reducing traffic emissions by 65% and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group ambitious goal of reducing private vehicle ownership to zero.
While public transport and cycling are both options for getting around the city, they aren't viable options for everyone all the time and while safety is important, cycle lanes should never be on main commuter routes and should never encroach on road space required for the free flow of traffic.
We can improve our efficiency by asking ourselves simple questions. Can a planned meeting be conducted virtually or over the phone? Can a necessary trip be combined with another trip to the same area and can it be done outside of peak traffic times? Humans are very capable of adapting without being forced into unworkable and unsustainable changes in behaviour.
If you're concerned about the changes being made to your city, start putting pressure on those responsible for making these changes.
