For those who want a unified and free Syria, join in supporting the voice of truth coming from the occupied Syrian island.

On the initiative of activists from the Syrian island, this hashtag has been launched to highlight the suffering of our people in Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Hasakah, who are facing curfews, random arrests, and killings by the de facto authority, the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia.

This campaign aims to deliver a clear message: the SDF does not represent us, and the people of the Syrian island demand freedom and dignity, and reject their absence from the political scene.
Be a voice for our people and join their struggle for a free and unified Syria.

Pedersen: Syrian people are going through a "historic transformation" after getting rid of the oppressive Assad regime

The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said that the Syrian people are going through a historic transformation, after overthrowing the oppressive and tyrannical Assad regime which subjugated them for more than 50 years. Pedersen emphasized the necessity of restoring Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity in full, and stopping the Israeli aggression immediately.

The senior UN official stressed the need to follow a comprehensive approach that respects human rights and supports the active participation of women "in order to build a peaceful and free Syria," noting that the Syrians are full of hope for a better and brighter future, despite the difficulties they will face in the coming period.

He indicated that there is a shared sense of responsibility among all components of Syrian society to rebuild their country and shape it on the basis of democracy and inclusiveness, noting that the fate of tens of thousands of missing persons remains unknown, and that countless families are still waiting for any news about their missing relatives.

Pedersen, said that there is great hope to see a new Syria that adopts a constitution for all Syrians and witnesses free and fair elections. He pointed out during a press conference in Damascus that the conflict in Syria is not over yet and there are some challenges in other areas.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the United Nations is focusing on facilitating the political transition in Syria, stressing the need for the transition to be comprehensive, reliable and peaceful, at a time when Damascus is witnessing an accelerated movement of delegations from Western countries to meet with the new transitional authority.

Guterres added that he appointed a Mexican lawyer as head of the independent institution concerned with missing persons in Syria, while pointing out that the Israeli air strikes violate Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity and must stop, and asserting that there should be no military forces, other than the UN peacekeeping forces, in the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights.

Pedersen earlier visited Sednaya prison, north of the capital Damascus, which is considered one of the most notorious and notorious prisons during the era of the ousted Assad regime. This came a day after he met with the commander of the military operations department, Ahmed al-Sharaa, where they discussed the importance of reconsidering UN Resolution 2254, which laid out a roadmap for reaching a political settlement in Syria.

Cameras documented the moments of a Syrian woman's anger, as she raised her shoe and pointed it at the vehicle carrying Pedersen, expressing her anger and pain, and shouted, "After what did you come?" amid the continued suffering of the families of the forcibly disappeared.

It should be remembered that Pedersen was the fifth UN special envoy provided to the Assad regime since 2011, and had been working closely with Bashar al-Assad for over six years since October 2018 up until Assad fled the country after his regime was vanquished, just over three weeks ago on December 8, 2024.

Freed parents reunited with children

A source from the Dar al-Rahma Orphanage in told Zaman al-Wasl that the two young girls, Hoda and Arej Ammar al-Rifai, have been reunited with their parents, both of whom were dissidents who had been imprisoned by the deposed regime, following their release from detention; the children were placed in the orphanage by a decision from the intelligence service, under the supervision of the former governor of Damascus. The mother was released shortly before the liberation, and the father was released from Sednaya Prison after his release.

The parents thanked the orphanage for taking care of their children, Zaman al Wasl learnt, as the orphanage was a refuge for the children which prevented them from being lost.

A source in the orphanage denied reports that more than 100 children had been handed back to their formerly detained parents, saying that only 24 children have so far been reunited with their families.

SDF Militia Slanders Syrian Network for Human Rights, Accusing It of “Misleading Information” About SDF Violations

In a statement issued today, the media center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia attacked the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) after the latter published news about the killing of three civilians (a man, his wife, and one of their sons) by gunfire from SDF members while the family were near their home in the village of Al-Qashla, located at the entrance to Tishreen Dam, southeast of the city of Manbij in eastern rural Aleppo.

The SDF media office launched its attack amid numerous, well-documented violations carried out by its forces, some of them with a vengeful character, against civilians in areas witnessing clashes, battles or withdrawals in the eastern countryside of Manbij, as a result of clashes with the Syrian National Army factions, amid major violations committed by the SDF militia, also disparagingly known as ‘Qasd’ by locals, in addition to accusations recorded against the SNA factions.

The group’s media office labelled the SNHR’s attribution of the crime to SDF forces as “systematic disinformation [which] seeks to obscure the crimes carried out by Turkish-backed mercenaries who were in control of the village at the time of the crime.”

It further claimed that the SDF forces whoentered the village about ten days ago were shocked to find the bodies of three civilians, Muhammad al-Khalil al-Ayyoub, his wife and his son Suleiman, who it said had been liquidated by members of the National Army, after resisting the SNA’s efforts to loot their home and property.

The SDF accused the SNHR of spreading misleading information, further claiming that the internationally respected human rights organization "enables the actual perpetrators to evade accountability”, adding , “This biased reporting has ignored hundreds of crimes committed by Turkish-backed mercenary groups in Afrin, Manbij and other areas, allowing these atrocities to continue unchecked. Such bias undermines victims’ rights to justice and accountability, perpetuating a cycle of violence and impunity.”

The SDF’s statement came after the Syrian Network for Human Rights, citing witnesses, reported that "Mohammad al-Ayyoub, his wife Fatima, and their son Suleiman were killed when members of the Syrian Democratic Forces shot them directly near their home in the village of al-Qashla, east of Aleppo Governorate, on 12-30-2024," noting that the Syrian Democratic Forces had committed a violation of international human rights law through the killing.

A number of residents of villages east of Aleppo had previously appealed to the Military Operations Administration to intervene and stop SDF from shelling residential areas in the area, while activists documented casualties from SDF landmines, shells and bullets in various areas.

In addition, activists in the eastern region confirmed the martyrdom of a young man, Hazem Al-Matar, by SDF gunfire, during a raid on his house in the village of Al-Rashwaniya in rural Qamishli, motivated by his refusal to agree to military conscription, with the SDF also continuing to loot government centers in the security square in the center of the city of Hasakah.

The SDF has also intensified the planting of mines around the areas under its control, with activists documenting the explosion of a landmine in a civilian vehicle in the Shash al-Bubna area of the Manbij countryside east of Aleppo, while a young man was killed as a result of the explosion of a landmine from the remnants of the war in the town of al-Baghiliya west of Deir Ezzor, and another was injured as a result of the explosion of a landmine near the paper factory in the village of al-Husayniyah north of Deir Ezzor city.

Activists and revolutionaries in the eastern region issued a statement on Saturday, December 14, in which they confirmed that Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Hasakah, and the eastern countryside of Aleppo are an integral part of Syria and that complete liberation cannot be declared without their being returned to their people.

Activists in the eastern region reported that the SDF militias launched extensive arrest campaigns that targeted many people, including young men, with the aim of forced conscription, amidst great confusion that is consistent with the security alert of the militias in eastern Syria.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights periodically issues reports documenting violations, including killings, arrests, targeting of civilian facilities, and a vast range of violations, documenting crimes by all the controlling forces in Syria without exception or favour. Since its inception, SNHR has been known for the accuracy of its information and reports it issues, which international organizations and foreign ministries in Western nations and internationally rely upon. The network is considered a primary source for documenting violations in Syria.

In its latest report issued on January 2, 2025, the Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the killing of 1,264 civilians in Syria in 2024, of whom the Syrian Democratic Forces killed 166, including 23 children and six women, in addition to figures related to violations carried out by the other concerned parties in Syria.

The 'Douma Four' - the four prominent civil rights activists abducted in Douma in 2013 - made headlines again yesterday (Wednesday January 1), when supporters held a demonstration to demand justice and accountability for them in front of the Violation Documentation Center where they were abducted from on the night of December 9, 2013, by members of the so-called 'Army of Islam'.

The four abductees—Razan Zeitouneh, Wael Hamada, Samira Khalil and Nazem Hammadi—were prominent figures in the early peaceful opposition movement during the Syrian Revolution; Zaitouneh, a human rights lawyer and civil society activist, had set up the VDC in June 2011 with Mazen Darwish, a fellow Syrian lawyer and free speech advocate.

Samira Khalil's husband, the prominent Syrian writer and thinker Yassin al-Haj Saleh, participated in the demonstration, saying “We are here because we want to know the whole truth about two women and two men who were disappeared from this place 11 years and 22 days ago."

“We are gathering here to remind the world of their case,” he added. “This is the first opportunity that allows us to be in Douma and in front of the place that they were kidnapped from, to speak up about the case, taking advantage of the political change that took place in the country.”

The protesters explained that they are working to "bring the case the Syrian judiciary regarding this crime” by following the judicial route and using political and civil pressure tools.

02/01/2025

It's nice to see the UN, which supplied Assad with 5 envoys (of whom Pedersen was one) from 2011 onwards, trying to do something good for Syrians for a change.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has urged the international community to support Syria’s complete restoration of sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity, while also calling for an immediate halt to Israel’s aggression.

“Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity must be fully restored, and all acts of aggression, including those by Israel, must stop immediately to pave the way for a more secure and stable future for Syria and the region,” Pedersen told Anadolu.

The envoy stressed that the war-torn country is undergoing profound and transformative changes, including shifts in governance, evolving military dynamics, the enormous task of reconstruction and a crippling economic crisis. “These challenges are immense, but there are glimmers of hope: families long separated by years of conflict are finally reuniting, and some are returning to homes they once believed were lost forever.”

Even though there are many challenges, Pedersen lauded Syrian optimism. “Despite enduring unimaginable hardships, the spirit of the Syrian people remains unbroken, and their hope for a better tomorrow is truly inspiring. These qualities left a profound impression on me during my recent visit.”

He highlighted the horror endured by those detained in the notorious Sednaya Prison and their families, brought to light with the Assad regime’s collapse. “One of the most significant moments has been the freeing of thousands of innocent civilians, who endured unimaginable conditions in Assad’s prisons. This is nothing short of a miracle,” said the UN official. “However, the unresolved fate of tens of thousands of missing persons — a tragedy of staggering proportions — continues to haunt the nation, casting a shadow over these positive developments.”

Pedersen said that the process triggered by the regime’s demise should be shaped by Syrians themselves, with international support. “The political transition must be Syrian-led, inclusive, and credible, ensuring that every community is fully represented and integrated into the fabric of the new, united and peaceful Syria. Particular attention must be given to upholding and respecting human rights and the rights of women and girls, ensuring their active participation in shaping Syria’s future. The UN is ready to support.”

The envoy stressed the need for a new constitutional framework and free, fair elections following international standards and Security Council Resolution 2254.

“Moreover, a comprehensive transitional justice process must be implemented to uphold the Syrian people’s right to truth, accountability and reparation. These measures are essential not only for establishing the rule of law but also for fostering social cohesion and achieving lasting peace.”

He described the situation in Syria as one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. “The UN and its partners remain deeply committed, actively mobilising resources and expertise to assess the situation on the ground, adapt their response to meet the changing needs of the population, and support recovery efforts.”

From the cold night of tyranny to the warm day of freedom.

People entering Syria used to be greeted by surly intimidating goons from the deposed Assad regime's notorious Fourth Division, who'd demand bribes and 'fees', and treat people with obnoxious arrogance. For any Syrian refugees returning (or being forcibly returned by Assad-allied authorities) in the past decade, this was doubly fearful since they were terrified of being arrested at the border and 'disappeared' into the regime's prisons for their dissent.

Now, Syrians at the Lebanese border are celebrating their new free nation, welcoming people crossing into or returning to Syria with genuine joy, warmth and friendliness, even handing out sweets and welcoming messages,

Assad's followers said "Assad or we burn the country", and the regime did exactly that. This post-apocalyptic footage, filmed today in the Hanano and Al-Sakhour neighbourhoods of Aleppo, shows some of the destruction left from regime bombing, which was followed by ethnic cleansing by regime and Russian forces.

The daunting scale of the task before the Syrian people in reviving and reconstructing their shattered nation is truly vast. But if anyone can do it and make it the great, thriving nation it has been and should be, the heroic free Syrian people can.

Israel sees growing exodus as at least 82,000 leave country in 2024

02-01-2025: '...The brain drain of people, often highly skilled doctors and professionals, highlights a trend among Israel’s elite, who increasingly believe they have no future in the country. Without them, Israel's own future could hang in the balance.

Last month Avi Steinberg, an Israeli-born author, said that he had formally renounced his Israeli citizenship.

Justifying his decision in an article for the left-leaning news publication Truthout, Steinberg said that Israeli citizenship had "always been a tool of genocide" that legitimised settler colonialism.

"Israeli citizenship is predicated on the worst kinds of violent crimes we know of, and on a deepening litany of lies intended to whitewash those crimes," he argued in the op-ed.

The author was born in Jerusalem to American parents and raised in an Orthodox setting. In 1993, his family moved back to the United States, where his father got a job as a director at Harvard University.

Steinberg cited a number of laws passed following Israel's founding that legitimised colonialism and discrimination against Palestinians, including the 1948 Declaration of Independence, the Law of Return in 1950, and the 1952 Citizenship Law.

One of the countries Israelis have been heading to is Germany.

A record 18,448 Israelis sought German citizenship in the first nine months of 2024, according to Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior, more than double the 9,178 applications submitted in 2023 and far surpassing the 5,705 from 2022.

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics latest figures exclude Israeli citizens living in other countries, such as the US, indicating the true extent of the trend may be underreported.

The sharp rise in departures further underscores growing disillusionment with Israel, as its devastating war on Gaza and internal Israeli politicial crises drive many to seek stability abroad.

As of 2024, Israel's population stood at 10.027 million, including 7.7 million Jews, 2.1 million Palestinian citizens, and 216,000 foreigners. However, population growth slowed sharply to 1.1 percent - down from 1.6 percent the previous year.

Meanwhile, a damning Palestinian report published on Tuesday confirmed that Gaza’s population had plummeted by 6 percent by the end of 2024, a direct consequence of Israel’s ongoing brutal assault on the Strip.

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), the war has left 45,541 Palestinians dead, at least 11,000 missing and believed to be under the rubble, and around 100,000 forced to flee Gaza as Israel’s campaign of destruction continues to devastate the enclave.

The population of Gaza had fallen to 2.1 million, the PCBS said in its end of year report.

The relentless assault continues in defiance of a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the besieged enclave.'

Escalating violence and Israel's campaign in Gaza spark a wave of departures, with the nation facing a brain drain and shrinking population growth
