The Gypsys Tale
Gypsy Tales almost happened by accident. I have been an avid podcast listener since about 2008, back in the infant stages of the medium. Still though, I had never really given much thought about hosting one of my own.
‘What qualifies me?’ Would have been the thought process if I had even had the idea. It wasn’t until a project came up for Red Bull where they asked if I would be interested in doing one with a couple of their athletes. I was in an interesting position because these were guys I knew well and were guys that I would call friends.
I didn’t really see a reason not to do it and I knew that it would be fun.
I didn’t really know how much fun though... There was something to this whole podcast thing. You put on headphones and your consumed with the conversation, that is rare in our current digital landscape. We live in the realm of 1 minute clips and deep scrolls. Grabbing peoples attention when it comes to a 1 minute Instagram is hard enough, let alone the hours is takes to listen to a podcast.
But people do listen to these long conversations... Some people even crave them. I think it is for the above reason. We are so inundated with content that a primal part of us is fulfilled when we slow down and just listen to a couple friends talk with ZERO distractions.
I call this the ‘campfire effect’. I grew up spending a lot of time in the bush of Australia and some of my earliest memories are a pre-phone era where your closes friends would sit around a fire for hours with the only background noise the faint, and somewhat mesmerizing, crackle of a camp fire.
That’s how I describe the feeling of recording a podcast. Here’s the kicker. That’s exactly how it feels listening to one. It’s the only medium I have found where you can experience the content as a consumer in the exact same way the creators did.
Headphones on, no noise.
So sit back, chuck on your headphones and listen in.
Our mission is to bring you interesting conversations. Conversations with people that I have met around the world on my travels as a film maker, athletes I have worked with and people I am curious to know more about.
