JAMIE ANNOUNCES SOUL SINGER ALBUM PROJECT
Legendary Producer Tom Moulton To Helm First-Ever Collaboration Between Soul Icons John Ellison, Kenny Hamber, William "Smoke" Howard, and Winfield Parker
Slated for a 2015 release on Jamie, Soul Singer sees soul legends John Ellison (lead singer of the Soul Brothers Six, and writer of the mega-hit "She's Some Kind Of Wonderful"), Winfield Parker ("S.O.S.," "Shake That Thing"), Kenny Hamber ("Show Me Your Monkey," "Rolling Dice") and William "Smoke" Howard ("You're The Reason Why," and lead singer for The Ebonys) coming together for the first time under the guidance of equally legendary producer Tom Moulton for a new album promising Soul - with a capital S.
"The idea for Soul Singer started to germinate when I was working on the Arctic Records box set (Cooler Than Ice: Arctic Records And The Rise Of Philly Soul)," Moulton relates. "When I was listening to all of those tracks, some of which I hadn't heard in years, it made me think about how much of an impact a lot of this music had on me when I first heard it; and that's something I don't get in the majority of what's referred to as soul today. Music should make you feel something. It's not about the groove or the beat, it's all about the singer, the song and the message; that's what I think of as Real Soul. I talked to Jimmy Williams (O'Jays bassist) to see what he thought about the idea of making a new album with people like John, Kenny, Winfield and Smoke, something that would recapture that feeling, and he was enthusiastic. I asked him to see what the other guys thought, and they were all into it, so here we are."
In addition to original material specifically written for this album by Pal Rakes (Pal and the Prophets) and John Ellison, the group recorded new versions of soul, R&B and gospel classics originally written and performed by Sam Cooke, Revelation, and the Mighty Clouds Of Joy. The project also boasts a rare reunion of some of the core musicians in Philadelphia International Records studio band, including guitarists Dennis Harris and TJ Tindall, drummer Keith Benson, and keyboardist Eugene “Lambchops” Curry, along with newcomer bassist Stacey McGee.
The album is being engineered by Grammy-nominated multi-platinum producer and engineer David Ivory, at Ivory’s Gwynedd Valley, PA-based Dylanava Studios.
