JAMIE'S OWN JOHN ELLISON TO BE INDUCTED INTO WEST VIRGINIA MUSIC HALL OF FAME

Jamie Records is excited to announce John Ellison's induction into the West Virginia Music Hall Of Fame. Celebrating its 10th year and sixth class of inductees, Ellison is among six honorees to be given this honor. The induction ceremony will take place October 24, 2015 at the Culture Center Theater, and will be broadcast live on WV PBS. The event will be part of FestivALL Fall.

Grand Funk Railroad guitarist Mark Farner will present John Ellison’s award and be part of the backing band when Ellison performs. In 1975, Grand Funk Railroad scored a No. 3 hit with Ellison’s song “Some Kind of Wonderful” and the song has gone on to be recognized in 2013 as one of the five most covered pop/rock songs of all time.

"The inductees for 2015 continues the Hall of Fame’s mission to recognize outstanding artists who were born or raised in the Mountain State,” said WV Music Hall of Fame Director Michael Lipton at a press conference announcing this year's honorees. “Our sixth class honors six unique West Virginia artists who have made lasting contributions to American music."

“In addition to the impact these musicians have made nationally, there is also a special connection to West Virginia. I think everyone - both in-and out-of-state - is consistently amazed at the diversity of the musicians who have come from our home state,” Lipton added. “And it’s always exciting to discover artists who have made their marks in unique ways. Of course, that kind of singular and homegrown creativity is something we have come to expect and admire from West Virginians.”

John Ellison's improbable rise from an impoverished family in a small coal mining town in West Virginia, through numerous hardships and the racist environment of the 1950's and '60s, to worldwide acclaim as a respected songwriter and performing artist, only serve to make his star shine even brighter and his life story all the more compelling.

"I'm truly thrilled to receive this honor," Ellison commented on his induction to the Hall. "If you don't lose sight of your vision, you will eventually reach your destination. Be a dreamer. Everything on this earth started with a dream."

The three living inductees*, Ellison, steel guitarist Russ Hicks, and jazz pianist Bob Thompson, will be present to accept their awards and will perform during their induction segment. Other presenters, performers and acceptors T.B.A.

JOHN ELLISON coming to The Firehouse Cafe In Mt. Holly, NJ, Saturday, November 15th

FIRST PHILADELPHIA AREA SHOW IN 10 YEARS

Jamie Records and 40 & Over @ Play Productions are proud to present the return of the iconic John Ellison to the Philadelphia area. Ellison, a true soul-funk legend, first rose to fame as lead singer of the Soul Brothers Six and later cemented his place in pop culture history as writer of the mega-hit "She's Some Kind Of Wonderful," which has been cited as one of the five most-covered songs in all pop music. This concert appearance, his first in the Delaware Valley in a decade, will take place Saturday, November 15th, at the Firehouse Cafe in Mt. Holly, NJ (20 Washington St). The Firehouse Cafe, an intimate 200-seat venue, has quickly emerged as the area's new go-to soul and R&B venue, with recent performances from the likes of Blue Magic and The Ebonys.

At 70 years young Ellison is one of the most dynamic and engaging performers still actively touring today, with high energy shows routinely exceeding the two-hour mark and providing non-stop entertainment. Fans can look forward to a career-spanning two-set retrospective with selections from as far back as his days with The Soul Brothers Six in the 1960s, from his extensive solo career that began in the '70s, and as new as those from his 2013 double CD Up From Funk (on Jamie); and, of course, no Ellison performance would be complete without his worldwide hit "She's Some Kind Of Wonderful." When asked about this upcoming show, Ellison enthusiastically said, "this is going to be one you'll be telling your grandkids about!" Then, namechecking a true Philadelphia original, he added, "As Butterball used to say, 'There is no other like this soul brother!'"

JAMIE ANNOUNCES SOUL SINGER ALBUM PROJECT

Legendary Producer Tom Moulton To Helm First-Ever Collaboration Between Soul Icons John Ellison, Kenny Hamber, William "Smoke" Howard, and Winfield Parker

Slated for a 2015 release on Jamie, Soul Singer sees soul legends John Ellison (lead singer of the Soul Brothers Six, and writer of the mega-hit "She's Some Kind Of Wonderful"), Winfield Parker ("S.O.S.," "Shake That Thing"), Kenny Hamber ("Show Me Your Monkey," "Rolling Dice") and William "Smoke" Howard ("You're The Reason Why," and lead singer for The Ebonys) coming together for the first time under the guidance of equally legendary producer Tom Moulton for a new album promising Soul - with a capital S.

"The idea for Soul Singer started to germinate when I was working on the Arctic Records box set (Cooler Than Ice: Arctic Records And The Rise Of Philly Soul)," Moulton relates. "When I was listening to all of those tracks, some of which I hadn't heard in years, it made me think about how much of an impact a lot of this music had on me when I first heard it; and that's something I don't get in the majority of what's referred to as soul today. Music should make you feel something. It's not about the groove or the beat, it's all about the singer, the song and the message; that's what I think of as Real Soul. I talked to Jimmy Williams (O'Jays bassist) to see what he thought about the idea of making a new album with people like John, Kenny, Winfield and Smoke, something that would recapture that feeling, and he was enthusiastic. I asked him to see what the other guys thought, and they were all into it, so here we are."

In addition to original material specifically written for this album by Pal Rakes (Pal and the Prophets) and John Ellison, the group recorded new versions of soul, R&B and gospel classics originally written and performed by Sam Cooke, Revelation, and the Mighty Clouds Of Joy. The project also boasts a rare reunion of some of the core musicians in Philadelphia International Records studio band, including guitarists Dennis Harris and TJ Tindall, drummer Keith Benson, and keyboardist Eugene “Lambchops” Curry, along with newcomer bassist Stacey McGee.

The album is being engineered by Grammy-nominated multi-platinum producer and engineer David Ivory, at Ivory’s Gwynedd Valley, PA-based Dylanava Studios.

This week we bring you some fantastic funk from The Fantastic Johnny C. "Hitch It To The Horse" was paired with "Cool Broadway" in 1968 as the follow-up single to Johnny's 1967 Top 10 hit "Boogaloo Down Broadway," both of which were released on Jamie's funkiest imprint Phil-LA of Soul. Both singles appeared on his only album, 'Boogaloo Down Broadway,' which itself is a treasure-trove of soul-funk classics that should not be missed. This awesome psychedelic cover is from the rare German release of the 45 on Phillips.
