Abdullah Abu-Mahfouz: I created a film as an 18-year-old film student... about 11 years ago now. The story is centered in a Palestinian hospital that gets bombed. Inside the hospital, a boy's father is dying and the hospital desperately needs power. The little boy confronts his fears and saves the hospital and his father by squeezing through the rubble and turning on the backup power.
I was very concerned about the fate of my fellow Palestinians. I was trying to make sense of the suffering I saw in the media, and was looking for ways to inspire my American peers to understand and empathize with me. I wanted to show them what I believed courage meant- the courage I witnessed in the Palestinians as they rebuilt their lives from the rubble.
In hindsight, I think I was naive... I regret that over the past two weeks, more than 3,000 Palestinians did not have a happy ending.
With the help of AI, I have remastered the original Super 16mm film to 4K UHD for your viewing. I hope this fictional story of bravery can help you find your own courage and empathize with the current situation. Heroes come in all sizes...
