Jona Turalde is the Community, Operations, and Resource Mobilization Lead of Transform Education, the young feminist coalition hosted by UN Girls Education Initiative.

Jona Turalde is a young feminist activist from the Philippines. She has worked in key leadership positions on various governing boards and advisory roles of international development organizations and feminist movements including SheDecides, International Planned Parenthood Federation, CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, and FRIDA, the Young Feminist Fund.

Oyidiya Oji is the Policy and Advocacy Advisor for Digital Rights at the European Network Against Racism (ENAR).

In this episode Oyidiay Oji and Julia Wiklander speak about the linkages between AI, digital rights and racism - and it’s links to the Olympics in Paris.

Oyidiya Oji shares a personal story of growing up and her journey into working in the anti-racism space and her interest in digital rights. She highlights the importance of understanding the impact of technology on marginalized communities and the need for a human rights approach in safeguarding digital rights. She talks about the challenges in implementing legislation and the role of civil society in shaping policies.

Julia and Oyidiya speak about the current situation in Paris, and what happened in Rio during the Olympics there. Oyidiya emphasizes the need for global solidarity in addressing digital rights issues and shares practical tips for being vigilant about technology use.

Nesmah Mansoor is a Women's Peace and Security expert and a Co-founder of the Peace Track Initiative.

Nesmah is currently serving as their Policy and Communication Senior Officer. She specializes in the intersection of peacebuilding and climate justice and is Peace Track Initiative’s focal point for Feminist Climate Justice issues. Nesmah is also pursuing a master's degree in International Relations at Inalco, Paris, with a focus on Security Studies.

In this episode Nesmah Mansoor speaks with Julia Wiklander about Yemen. Nesmah shares her journey as a changemaker, from challenging gender norms as a child to using her voice to raise awareness about the situation in Yemen. She gives us a very clear and comprehensive overview of the complex history of Yemen, including the civil war and the impact on the people, particularly the internally displaced persons (IDPs). She continues to emphasize the dire humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the challenges faced by IDPs, including lack of access to clean water and sanitation.

Nesmah and Julia talk about the Houthis involvement in the issue of Palestine and the ongoing genocide in Gaza, through their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Nesmah addresses the misconception that the Houthi rebels are heroes, highlighting their primary role in the conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and currently continue to violate human rights.

Magda-Sarah Boulabiza is the policy and advocacy advisor for climate and economic justice at the European Network Against Racism (ENAR).

In this episode Magda speaks with Julia Wiklander about the linkages between racial, climate and economic justice.

Magda shares her journey as a changemaker, starting with her experience of witnessing police violence at a young age. She discusses the interlinkages between climate and racial justice, highlighting how racialized communities are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis.

Magda also speaks about the hypocrisy of Europe in terms of repressive policies and the need for reparations for historical harms. She talks about Europe's history of colonialism and racism that has led to a racial wealth gap and ongoing discrimination. Magda gives current examples that show the effects and harms of the ongoing racism and lack of acknowledging responsibility for Europe’s colonial history.

Adèle Kirsten has been a non-violent, social justice activist for almost 40 years in South Africa, and is the Director of Gun Free South Africa, of which she was a founding member.

Adèle became active in the anti-apartheid movement in the late 70’s as a result of her opposition to the injustices of the apartheid system, the growing militarisation of the society, and her support for those who refused to serve in the apartheid army.

In this episode, Adèle shares how she got involved in the anti-apartheid movement as a student in South Africa. We talk about the linkages with the student movement today. She shares several stories from her work with Gun Free South Africa. One is the current - almost unbelievable - class-action lawsuit taking place in South Africa: Prinsloo Guns Class Action.

This book, Intrepid Paths Burma, is my tribute to Burmese women and girls—their incredible strength, resilience, perseverance, and potential.

The book’s embedded narrative memoir allowed me to protect the identities of my protagonists, to incorporate short fiction stories that would readily capture readers’ attention, and to provide the backstory of my involvement with Burma and its people.

In writing these stories, based on lives of women and girls known to me, I carry their faces in my mind—these women who entrusted me with their secrets. I feel a responsibility to accurately convey the restrictions under which they live—legal, political, cultural, economic, prejudicial, fear, and lack of access to basic rights. It’s within these parameters that these women constantly demonstrate their strength.

Since its foundation, the European Union has prided itself in standing up for human rights, dignity and freedom. It has seen itself as a light in the world for upholding justice, solidarity and equality.

Yet, time and time again, the actions of the European Union don't match the words they put on paper. And recently, we're seeing more examples of EU decisions that contradict its own treaties.

EU's hypocrisy can be seen in the human rights abuses it funds in other countries, it's crackdown on minority rights within member states or through its inaction for our shared climate.

This post details one of these hypocrisies and shares examples of others.

The European elections, taking place later this week, are important to take a stand for humanity and to turn the tide of European hypocrisy.

Therefore, we must understand which parties and members of European Parliament are willing to break the cycle of EU's hypocrisy.

Several international expert organizations and human rights and advocacy networks have conducted research to help us do so.

Students across western nations are taking to the streets and to their universities to demand them to end their complicity in the crimes of Israel and the ongoing genocide. The student movement is making noise and creating waves of change. The student protests that started in the US, have spread across the country and across Europe.

The past 8 months of brutal massacres, forced displacement, indiscriminate bombings, intentional starvation and other horrors inflicted by Israel on the Palestinian people in Gaza have been dreadful and heart wrenching to witness.

As of today, more than 35000 people have been killed by Israel in Gaza. 16000 children have been killed. Thousands are injured. Children maimed. Mothers lost. Families torn apart. Healthworkers targeted infront of patients. Mass graves found outside hospitals. Hospitals bombed. Cultural and historical sites destroyed. Places of worship ruined.

And every university turned to rubble.

Sharon Kathryn D’Agostino is a passionate advocate for the empowerment of women and girls, and for the human rights of all.

Sharon founded the story-sharing platform, SayItForward.org, and she hosts monthly Women’s Circles online. She believes in the power of stories to spark our compassion for ourselves and for others, and to recognize that we are all connected.

In this episode, Julia and Sharon discuss the virtual Women's Circles that Sharon hosts and the importance of self-exploration and community. Julia shares her experiences of participating in the circles and Sharon speaks about unfiltered writing and her choice of writing prompts. Over the past eight years, The Hunger Project-India’s Adolescent Girls’ Program has strengthened adolescent girls’ voice, agency and choice. This has been done through girls’ leadership workshops, life-skills education and need-based interventions. Peer networks in the form of Sukanya Club (Bihar) and Kishori meetings (Karnataka) are an integral element of the programme. There girls learn how to articulate their needs and advocate for change in their communities.

In 2022, Gayatri, a young girl from Karnataka, India, became the vice president of the locally formed Child Rights Protection Committee (CRPC) in her gram panchayat (village council).

Zimbabwean-born Micha Serraf is the winner of WILPF’s Second International Photography Collaboration which invited photographers from around the world to respond to the theme 'Men and Love in Times of War and Polarisation'.

Micha Serraf won for his series of images which he describes as "attempting to find the means and the methods of conjuring what Bell Hooks refers to as ‘feminist masculinity’. A masculinity that is abundantly concerned with reciprocal coexistence with the community in which it exists. A masculinity that is abundantly concerned with the wellbeing of women, other men, qu**rs, children, the environment, the past and a sustainable future. That’s why young people are breaking the stigma around mental health through advocacy, activism and storytelling.

Marylize Biubwa is an intersectional feminist and activist dedicated to social justice and fighting gender inequality.

They caution against offering false hope.

Instead of saying, “Don’t worry, you’ll be okay,” they suggest acknowledging the person’s struggle and offering support in a more genuine and practical manner.

Young people are a major demographic in the world. There are 1.8 billion young people bringing unique perspectives and diverse experiences that are valuable for the development of our shared future. To understand what meaningful youth engagement, participation and leadership really means, we must listen to young people themselves.

Through the Rising Minds podcast, young people shape conversations on the issues that impact their lives and wellbeing. In a series of deep dive blog posts, we summarise key messages from the speakers of the podcasts. This post reviews what youth engagement and leadership really means - and why it must be an urgent priority.

In the face of challenges for adolescents today, young people must be recognized as powerful agents of positive change. So, let's explore - with the help of young people - why we need them to lead today and what youth leadership should look like.
