Top Ten Wrestling Matches of the Pandemic ERA

10. Firefly Fun House, Wrestlemania 36 – 2020.

This might be a bit of nostalgia and a response in the recent death of Windham Rotunda (Bray Wyatt), however The Firefly Funhouse match is something that will and should be talked about within the wrestling fandom for years to come.

We had several callbacks to John Cena and Bray’s past, including their previous feuds. We also had a reference to the internet wrestling communities fantasy booking of John Cena turning heel… in the Hollywood Hogan sort of way. Too Sweet me brother!

9. Kenny Omega vs Trent?, AEW Dynamite - 4/1/2020

There is no denying that Kenny Omega was one of the MVP’s of AEW during the pandemic/Daily’s place era. One of the MVPs as AEW had several people step up and put on great performances, some of the performances will be referenced later. However, this was Kenny collecting belts run, he had the AEW World Championship, the TNA World Championship, the Impact World Championship, and AAA Mega Championship. He took this time and eyes he had to allow others shine.

One such instance was on a Dynamite against Trent? (Trent Beretta of WWE). This match allowed Trent to show his ability, draw more eyes to him, and show he can be a real threat to the world championship. There was false finishes and there were times you were certain Trent would pull it out… however, Kenny did leave with the Title that night.

8. Adam Cole vs Pat McAfee, NXT Takeover ### - 2020

When Pat entered the WWE and set up this match, it wasn’t clear if Pat was a fan or someone who really despised Adam Cole. Pat helped build the match on his show, The Pat McAfee Show. Of course on the show, it made it seem like it was a storyline as Pat kept referencing Adam using the Undisputed Era to win matches. The build was great, including Pat “punting” Adam Cole’s head.

The match itself was impressive as Pat was not a trained talent who put on shows. He showed his Athleticism throughout, including running up the turnbuckle to toss Adam off the top, something that you do not see constantly from full time wrestlers. The match ended by Adam Cole pulling off the Panama Sunrise, but it was a great first showing for Pat.

7. Boneyard Match, Undertaker vs AJ Styles, Wrestlemania 36 - 2020

This match might be the most meme filled matches on this list. The scene from the meme, came from when Undertaker popped up behind a laughing AJ. The memes saying something along the lines “me having $20” above AJ and “$200 bill due tomorrow” above Undertaker. This, like the Firefly Funhouse match from the same Wrestlemania was a cinematic match. The Undertaker pulling from his time as the American Bad Ass, but more so Mark Calaway, the man portraying The Undertaker since the 90’s.

This was Mark’s final run and ended with him “burying” AJ Styles and riding off into the sunset.

6. MJF vs Jungle Boy, Double or Nothing, 2020

This was an early showing for MJF and Jungle Boy. Jungle Boy prior to this was mainly used as a Tag Team/Trios wrestler with Luchasaurus and Marko Stunt, and MJF was still finding his footing/role within the company.

This match shows the abilities in ring of both MJF and Jungle Boy, pulling off moves we have not seen from MJF. MJF’s selling ability shines bright throughout the match and really puts over Jungle Boy as a real threat through the match. In the end MJF walks away with the win, but if you want to see early match from these two, that is worked very well. Check this out from Double or Nothing 2020.

5. Kevin Owens vs Roman Reigns, Last Man Standing, Royal Rumble, 2021

Kevin was the unsung hero of the Pandemic era. He used the fact the mics would pick up what he said in matches to his advantage. One instance was during the match with Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania 36 and saying things like “come on Messiah!”. This match was another and helped continued the trajectory as Roman as the Tribal Chief and furthered the hold Roman had on Jey.

Owens started the feud and tried to call out Roman and his mistreatment of Jey. This ending sealed Jey as Roman’s right hand man. A title he held for around 2 years.

4. Brodie Lee vs Cody Rhodes, Dog Collar Match, AEW Dynamite - 10/7/2020

When Brodie Lee came into AEW as the leader for the Dark Order from WWE (Luke Harper), he came in strong. Vignettes showed him to be a dominating leader and made it feel like Dark Order finally had the oomph behind them to be a force to reckon with in AEW.

This match was a prime example of what Brodie could do in AEW. Cody made Brodie look strong here, look mean, and remorseless. At the end, Brodie stood tall at the ramp with Dark Order while Cody laid bloody in the ring.

3. Stadium Stampede 1 The Elite (Kenny, The Bucks, Page, and Matt Hardy) vs Inner Circle (Jericho, Hager, Proud and Powerful, Guevara), Double or Nothing - 2020

This was a first of it’s kind, something that AEW has replicated since. The first Stadium Stampede took place in Jacksonville at the Jaguar stadium between The Elite and Inner circle. This is AEW doing the cinematic match with 5 on each team, and playing off funny instances between the teams. One instance was Hardy being dunked multiple times and going through different versions of Hardy.

If you like the ridiculous, you will like this match. There is a lot of ridiculous instances in this match, but still remains fun in the end.

2. Sami Zayn vs Jeff Hardy vs AJ Styles, Clash of Champions - 2020

This was a great set up. Sami was not in WWE (while being the intercontinental champion) due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Since he was off TV, WWE had a tournament to crown an intercontinental Champion in which AJ Styles won becoming the interim Intercontinental champion.

Prior to going off TV, Sami was portraying a character in which there was a conspiracy against him. This helped play into the build for this match, as Sami was claiming that AJ having the title was part of the conspiracy against him.

There were some great spots in this match, including (which was hard to watch), Jeff Hardy getting his earlobe handcuffed to the ladder.

1. Roman Reigns vs Jey Uso, Hell in a Cell - 2020

Roman was still building the Tribal Chief character. This was to show how heartless he could be. He beat his own family and “brother” to a pulp to get Jey to bend to his whim and show how ruthless he could be. Jimmy attempted to save Jey at the end, but this was part of the start of the character who would dominate WWE for years to come.

Can we stop talking about AEW/WWE ratings? They really don't hold the same weight they use to. WB/D still is happy with and performance. NBC and FOX are happy with performance. Enjoy the availability of shows

Alright folks, let's discuss. 2 part question, would Benoit be able to keep up with the current crop? 2nd part, if you can take anyone from this era and plant them in another, who would it be and when?

Anyone else feel it is a slap in the face of Fandango and Tyler Breeze to cut them and then give Max Dupri, Mace and Mansoor virtually the same gimmick?

I loved the fashion police gimmick and their 'investigations'.
