Documentary Filmmakers Association of South Africa The Documentary Filmmakers’ Association of South Africa serves to assist, protect and promote film The documentary film genre is unique.
(9)

The Documentary Filmmakers’ Association (DFA) was established to nurture and develop the interests of documentary filmmakers in South Africa. It stimulates public discourse, reflects on social, political, cultural and current events, explores history, commemorates heritage and unearths the mysteries of the universe and the planet. Documentaries tell stories of ordinary and extraordinary people and

communities – they celebrate, question, investigate and reflect. The most accessible genre of filmmaking, it is often marginalised by the broadcast industry and by other sectors / genres within the film and video production industry. The DFA aims to unify documentary filmmakers and gain recognition for the genre. It remains the only association in South Africa with the sole purpose of assisting, protecting and promoting documentary filmmakers. The DFA is key member of SASFED (The South African Screen Federation).

DFA’s docLOVE in partnership with PESP4 and National Film and Video Foundation invites you to join us for a free screening of "1001 DAYS" directed by Chloe White and DFA member Kethiwe Ngcobo.

KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Rd, Bulwer, Durban
27 April at 12 noon
RSVP: https://linktr.ee/docfilmsa

In Alexandra, South Africa, where two thirds of the women are abuse survivors, a group of mothers are on a mission to change the fate of their neighbourhood, right from the beginning. Through a series of intimate, and at times, uncomfortable, conversations, 1001 DAYS takes the audience on a journey. Through the chaotic and narrow streets of Alexandra, we follow the fearless and charismatic health-workers Zanele, Thandiwe and Khosi. They are three mothers from the heart of the community, who doggedly support hundreds of new mothers, during some of their happiest–and lowest–moments. Their aim: to help new mothers during the first 1001 days of their babies' lives, which are the most critical in any human’s life.

Please join the DFA’s docLOVE for a special screening of "Intellectual Giants of the Eastern Cape" directed by DFA member Alette Schoon. We are very grateful to the National Film and Video Foundation for making the screening possible.

Waaihoek Wesleyan Church, Bloemfontein | 20 April at 2pm
Seating is free but please RSVP via https://linktr.ee/docfilmsa

In the 19th and early 20th century, thousands of black South Africans embraced education through the mission schools of the Eastern Cape. It is from these people that several generations of Eastern Cape intellectuals emerged: people like Tiyo Soga, SEK Mqhayi, Phyllis Ntantala, and JT Jabavu. Yet these intellectuals did not simply assimilate into colonial ways of thinking, they resisted these frameworks, and instead developed their own ideas. It is no accident that it is the Eastern Cape where groundbreaking ideas of black theology, black consciousness, and the democratic values of modern South Africa developed, alongside rich literary and musical traditions. Isaac Newton famously recognised the intellectuals whose work enabled his own by saying “If I have seen further than others, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants”.

As South Africans, how can we be elevated to intellectual heights if we do not even know who our giants are? In this film Dr Hleze Kunju sets off on a roadtrip to introduce a new generation of students to the intellectual giants of the Eastern Cape and to invite them to walk in their footsteps. As the first person to write his PhD in isiXhosa, Dr Hleze Kunju embodies an Eastern Cape intellectualism of embracing knowledge from different worlds and bringing them together in new ways of thinking. While he is an academic, he is also a performer and a trained opera singer, who takes every opportunity to share historic songs and poetry created by Eastern Cape intellectuals throughout the film.

DFA’s docLOVE in partnership with the PESP4 and National Film and Video Foundation invites you to join us for a free screening of !AITSA directed by DFA member, Dane Dodds.

Johannesburg, The Bioscope: 17 April 2024 at 7pm
RSVP: https://linktr.ee/docfilmsa

Dane Dodds’ documentary, !Aitsa, is an immersive journey that transcends the boundaries of tradition, science and spirituality. The film explores the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project in the Karoo, which seeks to unravel the mysteries of the universe through radio astronomy. However, it is not merely a scientific exploration, as Dodds takes the viewer on a historical expedition, delving into the traditional roots of the Khoi and San populations of the region.

Through the film’s lens, we witness the enigmatic convergence of scientific and traditional knowledge, as we are reminded of the sacred value that the land holds for the early inhabitants. The film’s loving portrayal of the Karoo landscape serves as a poignant reminder that the history and traditions of a place are intertwined with its scientific discoveries.

Dodds’ curious direction invites us to reflect on the fine line that exists between the exploration of modern science and ancestral practices, whilst also bringing into question the juxtaposition of cultures in a most captivating and compassionate documentary.

khuselwa Tembani, PhD student, reads out the words the audience associated with the Doclove film, 1001 Days at the screening in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.. We used the tool Mentimeter to capture audience reactions. The audience was riveted and kept on discussing the film for nearly an hour. There was a hope that the film could be used in psychology classrooms and that researchers could use the experience of these women to develop a model that could be incorporated into government training of anti-natal support.

13/04/2024

The 12th kykNET Silwerskerm Festival, taking place in Camps Bay from 28 to 31 August 2024, continues its mission to provide a launchpad and platform for aspiring filmmakers in the TV and film industry. Among the debut works to premiere at the festival this year are five short documentary films. In the meantime, submit your entries for the 2025 Silwerskerm Festival competition for short films and short documentary films.

Emerging filmmakers can enter for short documentaries, and established filmmakers (screenwriters, directors and producers who have participated in the Silwerskerm short film competition before) can submit their ideas. The evaluation process for the competition spans several phases. If a short documentary is in your sights, you will initially have to submit the title of your documentary, a description of the story and themes, the documentary genre you’re tackling and the duration of your proposed film. The documentary must be no longer than 30 minutes. Any language may be included, but 60% of the content must be in Afrikaans or any variant of the language.

The finalists for the second round, to be selected in May 2024, will then hand in a pitch video. This is followed by a third sifting round, which includes a full presentation with a budget plan and director’s vision, among other aspects. This round will determine who the successful candidates are to receive funding and mentorship to turn their documentary dreams into reality.

The 2025 short films can be between 7 and 30 minutes long, in any genre and any variant of Afrikaans. It may also include other languages, but 80% of the dialogue must be in Afrikaans. Your entry for the first round of assessment must include a concept proposal of 250 to 300 words. The screenplay, director’s treatment and budget will follow later. The deadline is Monday, 15 April 2024, and the entry fee is R350.
