Five years.
It's the usual "oh we had no idea what this would become when we started!" kind of story. But we didn't. And we still don't. And that is pretty cool.
As I sit here listening to "Heathen" by Thou, it begs me to think of the beginnings of the show. Damn we played Thou a lot the second year we were on the air. But in our defense, the band released 4 EP's and a full length. So, like... we kinda had to, I guess. The team of Travis, Darby, and Serena wasn't finalized until the afternoon of the first broadcast. I (Travis) knew that my old friend Darby was down and was the first person I thought of when I needed an engineer. He probably didn't think we would still be here 5 years later either. Serena was asked that afternoon if she wanted to come on and chat. At the time I think we were really digging Chelsea Wolfe and Windhand. Still do, for the most part.
I can't go back and name all the guests, remote attempts, and wild song we have played. We never knew who (if anyone) was listening, but what we were doing has always felt important. At a time when Spotify algorithms are making you listen to the same 3 Primus songs in 14 different playlists, it really is an honor to be DJs for the local and extended area. It is a privilege to hear something and say, "We need to play this so other people hear it." and then be able to. Think of all the time you have wanted to share a song with the world. We are incredibly lucky to have this opportunity week in and week out. Community radio, like the amazing programing we get to be alongside at 100.9 WFFR, is important. It is free. It is curated by a human being. Who answers the phone. Who can tell you what they just got done playing and tell you more stuff like it, and maybe even where to buy it, and what formats it's available on. Thank you.
Thank you to everyone who has listened, called in, been a guest, told someone else to listen to us, and enjoyed or was impacted by our programming. Thank you to 100.9 WFFR for taking a chance on some rag tag DJs. Sometimes it's not about the amount of people you reach, but what you can bring them. I hope we have brought you something special.
During the global pandemic, I did what I could to make the show continues to happen solo. It sucked without Darby and Serena, but I did get to interview some great folks and raise some awareness for real DIY spaces the world over. That felt pretty cool. Having the weekly show to do truly kept me sane.
I can't make any promises about another five years. Even another year. Life is wild, the world is wild, and we gotta be wild too. But we will be here this week. We will have some old guests. And we will try and have some fun and play some good music, the only thing we have ever really wanted. And we will be here for the weeks after that. Hopefully you can stick around with us as long as you can.
