John Tovar was instrumental in the national success of local outfits, including Nuclear Valdez, the Mavericks, Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, and the Goods, among others.

Sad news today. Mr. T has left the building.

I met John Tovar at A&M Studios in 1989 when he was managing Nuclear Valdez. I had just started as a runner, and I was excited to find out they were fellow Cubans from Miami. He was a big personality with a big hat haha. Over the years we became friends and I would help with mastering his bands and even went on to form Sinical Records in order to help him with some releases. We butted heads a lot but agreed on what a band should sound like, "BIG". He was so talented at finding new artists (most famously Marilyn Manson and The Mavericks) and his passion for music knowledge kept us talking for hours.

I'll miss seeing his name show up on the caller ID and the times we met up for Indian food. Rock on Mr. T. Hope you're enjoying a cafecito with your Mom today. -Roland Alvarez
