In a historic decision, On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade declaring that the constitutional right to abortion upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.⁣

What does this mean for us:⁣

◦ By permitting more restrictive abortion policies, the ruling will disproportionally hurt the reproductive health of African American women⁣

◦ Black women are more likely to live in “contraception deserts” where they cannot readily find reproductive health care or contraception⁣

◦ Black women in the South have the lowest rates of health insurance coverage among all Black women. That makes it harder to seek necessary health care, including for reproductive and maternal health.⁣

◦ Many of the procedures and medications used to perform abortions in the U.S. are also crucial for treating miscarriages⁣

◦ Legal restrictions to abortion—alongside the fear of being prosecuted or suspected of facilitating one—also threaten to limit access to these procedures for treating miscarriage.⁣

◦ This could prevent medical staff from offering optimal treatment to their patients, where miscarrying patients are struggling to obtain their prescribed medication.⁣

This week is National Infertility Week⁣

Infertility is a disease characterized by the failure to establish a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual in*******se. It is estimated to affect between 8 and 12% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. Males are found to be solely responsible for 20-30% of infertility cases but contribute to 50% of cases overall. Many people often suffer in silence but they don’t have to. There is help and support!⁣

"This is important because infertility is bigger than babies. It affects so much of a person's life beyond reproduction, and the more we talk about it and provide connection, the more we can help one another."⠀ ⁣

Though we must always recognize the many amazing contributions women have made to society, Women's History Month is the perfect time to really set aside some time to recognize and honor the women in our lives that impact us in small but significant ways each day.

“And one day she discovered that she was fierce and strong and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back, because her passion burned brighter than her fears.” –Mark Anthony

Today is World AIDS Day! This year’s theme is “End the HIV Epidemic: Equitable Access, Everyone's Voice." ⁣

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. Each year, organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the HIV epidemic, endeavor to increase HIV awareness and knowledge, speak out against HIV stigma, and call for an increased response to move towards ending the HIV Epidemic in the US. ⁣

HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 32 million lives so far. However, with increasing access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care, including for opportunistic infections, HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.⁣

Unfortunately there are still some vulnerable populations in our community that are not getting diagnosed or getting the care that they need. Blacks/African Americans still account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses. In 2017, 43% of the new HIV diagnoses in the United States were African American. There are many reasons for these numbers, among them being significant stigma, socioeconomic issues, homophobia and more. ⁣

For more information about HIV/AIDS or World AIDS day visit UNAIDS.com or HIV.gov.⁣

To get tested, visit your local health department or clinic. Some hospitals also provide testing. ⁣

Follow the hashtag to stay up to date with all of the events today. Wear red ribbons if you can. ⁣

Lastly! Go to Spotify, Apple podcasts or anchor to listen to our two episodes on HIV⁣

Exercise combats many health conditions and diseases. ⁣

For me, exercise has not only helped shave a few extra pounds, it has helped build my inner strength during a difficult year. Life has its challenges and we often need to find things that will help us weather the storm. ⁣

What benefits has exercise given you? ⁣

So you felt a breast lump??! Here is what you need to know.⁣

Breast lumps are common, and most often they're noncancerous (benign), particularly in younger women.⁣

Benign causes of breast lumps include:⁣

💗abscess or infection.⁣
💗adenoma or fibroadenoma.⁣
💗cysts.⁣
💗lipoma.⁣

Breast lumps need to be evaluated so we can rule out breast cancer.⁣

A breast cancer lump or tumor usually feels hard or firm. It typically has an irregular shape, and it may feel as if it is stuck to the skin or deep tissue within the breast.⁣

💕Breast self exams are controversial but many women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer felt their lump this way. Make sure you make an appointment with your doctor today to get an exam.⁣

They will see you and likely schedule you for a mammogram or ultrasound to evaluate the lump further. ⁣

Again remember most lumps are benign! But do not sit at home if you feel one.⁣

October is breast cancer awareness month. Check out Podcast Episode 5 on Breast Cancer! In the mean time, here are some statistics you should know:⁣

💗A US woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is 1 in 8.⁣

💓Breast cancer has the highest mortality rate of any cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 59.⁣

💗African American women have a 31% breast cancer mortality rate – the highest of any U.S. racial or ethnic group.⁣

💗Among women younger than 45, breast cancer incidence is higher among African American women than White women.⁣

💗Younger women in general, and younger African American women in particular, are more likely to present with the triplenegative subtype of the disease, a subtype that is both more aggressive and associated with a higher mortality.⁣

💗Over the past 20 years, despite the universal drop in mortality rates, we have seen a rise in the incidence of breast cancer in African American women.⁣

💗The mortality rate for Black women diagnosed with breast cancer is 42% higher than the comparable rate for White women.⁣

There are non modifiable risk factors for breast ca such as age, gender and genetics we cannot change. Modifiable risk factors we can change and include weight, alcohol, smoking, and chemical exposures. ⁣

13/07/2021

Did you know low breastfeeding rates in the USA are a product of systemic racism? ⁣

Black women are most likely to be the primary economic support for their families, with 70.7 percent of Black mothers as sole breadwinners and 14.7 percent as co-breadwinners. This means that shortly after birth, many Black women experience economic pressures that motivate them to return to the workplace earlier than any other race.⁣

Black people are also less likely than their white counterparts to occupy jobs that offer greater flexibility, economic stability, and better benefits, such as paid family leave, which is associated with a longer continuation of breastfeeding.⁣

Many women of color find it challenging to engage and maintain breastfeeding due many social, financial, educational and even historical barriers.  Black women have the lowest breastfeeding initiation rate of all racial groups at 69.4 percent, compared with 85.9 percent of white women, and 83.2 percent of women overall.  ⁣

On this episode we delve into the socioeconomic barriers preventing breastfeeding amongst women of color, while sharing our own personal experiences.⁣

May is upon us! And it is also National High Blood Pressure Education month. Unfortunately, high blood pressure is an issue that is rampant in our community.

Numerous studies have documented high rates of hypertension in African American people compared with those in other racial groups.

“Being Black is not a risk factor for poor health; racism is.”
ALETHA MAYBANK, MD, MPHj

Several factors may work together to cause high blood pressure.

• Medical racism: Several studies have documented a pattern of racism against Black people seeking healthcare, showing that doctors may not listen to their concerns, may delay treatment, or may not recommend appropriate treatment.
• Racism: Chronic exposure to racism is associated with hypertension
• Lifestyle risk factors: — including eating a high salt, high fat diet, having a lack of access to quality food, and getting little exercise — can increase the risk of hypertension

Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other serious illnesses.

Make sure to monitor your blood pressure regularly with support from your health care team, to lower your risk for heart disease and stroke. You can check your blood pressure at the doctor’s office, at a pharmacy, or even at home! Learn more from CDC. http://bit.ly/2iFB6U5
