In a historic decision, On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade declaring that the constitutional right to abortion upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.
What does this mean for us:
◦ By permitting more restrictive abortion policies, the ruling will disproportionally hurt the reproductive health of African American women
◦ Black women are more likely to live in “contraception deserts” where they cannot readily find reproductive health care or contraception
◦ Black women in the South have the lowest rates of health insurance coverage among all Black women. That makes it harder to seek necessary health care, including for reproductive and maternal health.
◦ Many of the procedures and medications used to perform abortions in the U.S. are also crucial for treating miscarriages
◦ Legal restrictions to abortion—alongside the fear of being prosecuted or suspected of facilitating one—also threaten to limit access to these procedures for treating miscarriage.
◦ This could prevent medical staff from offering optimal treatment to their patients, where miscarrying patients are struggling to obtain their prescribed medication.
