According to several sources, Erbauliche is considered the world's first magazine (published in Germany). It was started in 1663 by Johann Rist, a theologian and poet of Hamburg. The Gentleman's Magazine, first published in 1731 in England, is considered to have been the first modern magazine. Later in 1741, Benjamin Franklin hoped to publish America's first magazine called General Magazine, but was beaten to the finish line when American Magazine came out three days earlier.
