“𝙍𝙊𝘽𝘽𝙄𝙀 𝘽𝘼𝙎𝙎𝙋𝙀𝘼𝙍𝙀”

I didn't realize that Robbie was so very young when he made his mark performing bass on the actual “Concrete Jungle” song, by The Wailers.

Well, that’s what Robbie told me while we chilled out at a hotel in London during the Island Records “50th Anniversary” celebrations... that would have made him only 19 years of age.

It wasn’t hard to believe his story because if you know this track you can compare the approach to the bass lining, that it is very much similar to the length of time a note is played and held on many other tracks that Robbie recorded with Peter Tosh.

Not to take away from “Family Man” Barrett’s soulful expertise and ex*****on, but Robbie Shakespeare had a “bad man” approach to his bass line delivery. Tracks like “General Penitentiary,” and “Botanical Roots,” still ring with the ones in my age group as being “Raw” and “Makka.” In other words, Shakespeare’s lines could easily be used as the sound track of a highly dangerous man entering a building and about to create some damage. Ha... it was also rumoured that Robbie himself never performed without having a gun tucked away somewhere under his belt during the earlier years of his career.

And like I keep saying, we are losing our legends one by one and have taken them all for granted. Well, at least he was recognised at position number 17 on the billboard greatest bass players of all time, charts. Robert Shakespeare, born 27th September 1953 made his transition yesterday, 8th December, 2021.

Sly Dunbar, our heart is bleeding for you right now because the contribution that you both made remains unchallenged and unprecedented. Because it was you both that sat down and orchestrated a new sound in order for the music to have been accepted by the industry outside of Jamaica. It wasn’t an easy ride.
