HYPERTENSION

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called "pre-hypertension", and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high.
The top number, the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.
An elevation of the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart (cardiac) disease, kidney (renal) disease, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), eye damage, and stroke (brain damage). These complications of hypertension are often referred to as end-organ damage because damage to these organs is the end result of chronic (long duration) high blood pressure. For that reason, the diagnosis of high blood pressure is important so efforts can be made to normalize blood pressure and prevent complications.
It was previously thought that rises in diastolic blood pressure were a more important risk factor than systolic elevations, but it is now known that in people 50 years or older systolic hypertension represents a greater risk.
The American Heart Association estimates high blood pressure affects approximately one in three adults in the United States - 73 million people. High blood pressure is also estimated to affect about two million American teens and children, and the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that many are under-diagnosed. Hypertension is clearly a major public health problem.

Hypertension is the other name of high blood pressure. It’s a silent killer, which tends to affect the normal life of the working age population. Hypertension comes associated with high-stress conditions to be found in the work station. If it is not controlled effectively, those people who are suffering can experience a series of serious health related problems.
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a medical situation where the average blood pressure reading is found to exceed the normal -140/90. Eventually, the strain it places on the blood vessels and on the heart can increase health risks. People can experience serious health-related problems, such as stroke, heart disease and even kidney damage.
Hypertension is considered an autonomous and a high risk situation for the cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure and kidney failure. Other important factors which are credited to the disease hypertension include obesity, genetic vulnerability and high salt intake. It is one medical condition which can be an indication of any dormant disease.
Such a condition can continue for several years without being detected due to lack of any concrete symptoms, unless and until any damage occurs. The most horrible effects of high blood pressure or hypertension are on kidneys, heart, brain and eyes. Hypertension is a major cause of more number of deaths in adults. It is a severe health problem which is also regarded as a single contributor to heart attacks or stroke.

THE CAUSES OF HYPERTENSION
The dangerous thing about hypertension or high blood pressure is that you can have it for years and you’re not even aware of any recognizable symptom. Unchecked and untreated hypertension increases risk of severe health complications, such as stroke and heart attack.
Blood pressure is a factor of the volume of blood pumped by your heart and the measure of resistance by your arteries. Thus, if your arteries are narrower than normal, your blood pressure will climb.
Usually, it takes years for hypertension to develop and almost everyone eventually gets affected by it. There are many ways today by which hypertension can be detected. After you’ve been properly diagnosed with the illness, you can modify your lifestyle to be able to adapt to it and live a good quality of life.
Doctors recognize two kinds of hypertension.
Essential or Primary Hypertension

Interestingly, 95% of cases of hypertension among adults do not have an identifiable root cause. Physicians call this kind of hypertension primary or essential and it typically develops slowly over several years.
Secondary Hypertension

The remaining cases of hypertension are brought about by a preexisting condition. Physicians refer to this kind of high blood pressure as secondary hypertension. It usually appears quite suddenly and induces the patient’s blood pressure to reach higher levels than that of the primary type. A variety of unrelated conditions and medicines may contribute to the development of secondary hypertension, such as: adrenal gland tumors, abnormalities in the kidneys, cold medications, pain killers, and illegal drugs like amphetamines.
Many people are in risk of hypertension. For instance, old people are in greater risk of having high blood pressure. Race also plays a factor in the development of high blood pressure. Studies have found out that African Americans tend to develop hypertension earlier in life than Caucasians. If you have a family history of hypertension, then you are also in greater risk of the condition.
THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTENSION

The symptoms of hypertension are very clear. These include heavy perspiration, increase of warmth in the body and the person gets out of control in conversation. For instance when there has been an argument in office or a situation which involved you can result in hypertension. Similarly, when you have been working many hours without rest, which was not suitable to your body can also result in increase in hypertension levels.
This way there are many reasons which are both psychological and physical affecting the hypertension patient.
When the hypertension symptoms are evident in person should immediately be made seated in a comfortable place and give lot of time to come back to normal level. This definitely takes time for at least twenty minutes. After this period, a doctor should be consult whether the blood pressure levels have come down to normal level and whether there is any therapy that is required to be given on emergency basis.
If symptoms are ignored and if there are no treatments made available to the person, the increasing levels of hypertension will leave an adverse affect on the functioning of the heart and at times, the person may collapse.
Therefore, a hypertension person must always be very cautious in taking care of symptoms and also should be efforts to prevent it.
Some of the other symptoms are too much of excitement in a conversation and high rise of ecstatic moment can also result in hypertension. This generally happens in older people who would not be in a position to receive too many surprises. This is why, doctors always say that a hypertension person should always be monitored on a psychological level to give either a good news or a bad news.
At times when symptoms are quite apparent among children or young men and women, a good care must be administered immediately to prevent it.
One important fact is those who have good understanding about the treatment of hypertension can always give good care for its control and prevention. There are many cases where people because of not having accurate knowledge and awareness about hypertension have really risked their lives to a great danger. While it takes only a limited time to visit a doctor and know about hypertension, the prevention and identifying symptoms are the best way to treat hypertension at an early stage.
Further it cannot be guaranteed that a person who has developed hypertension will continue to suffer with the problem. Because if the person changes habits of food, life style and working style, hypertension may actually completely give relief. So, this is always possible.
But keeping all these in view, it is important to get a good source of information on health and hypertension in order to prevent it, treat it and taking future care to avoid it.
As the modern day life style is rapidly changing people, they begin to pay more attention to health levels and hypertension must be treated on a priority.
